Pres. Jonathan Calls for Probe of Past Administrations | Claims $1bn Previous Judgment Debts were Uncovered

Goodluck Jonathan Declaration

President Goodluck Jonathan said in Abuja on Wednesday that those calling for the probe of his administration should ensure that all past administrations were subjected to it.

The president said this in his speech at the Valedictory Session of the Federal Executive Council at the State House in Abuja.

He said that his administration recently uncovered huge judgment debts accumulated by previous administrations.

Jonathan said that a lot of things had gone wrong in the country which were all ascribed to his administration, adding that his administration had done well in spite of the criticisms.

“Some people are even calling for the probe of the government.”

“I agree that in Nigeria there are a number of things that will be probed; very many things; even debts owed by the states and debts owed by this nation from 1960.”

“Up to this time they say it is the Jonathan administration that owes all these debts.”

“And I believe that anybody calling for probe must also ensure that this probe is extended beyond the Jonathan administration.”

“Otherwise, to me, it will be witch hunting.”

“If you are very sincere, then it is not only the Jonathan administration that you probe.”

“A number of things have gone wrong, we have done our best.”

“The Attorney-General is aware of massive judgment debts, if you aggregate all the judgment debts, the recent ones that we discovered is going into 1 billion dollars.”

“How did we come to these kinds of judgment debts? These issues should be probed.”

“How did we allocate our oil fields, oil wells, marginal fields and so on? Did we follow our laws?”

“All these should be probed and I believe many more areas need to be looked at.’’ He said.

The President pointed out that the cabinet had tried very well under a very difficult political situation.

He said there were a lot of criticisms, as “people talk different things at different times, even those who make the statements know that they are purely political”.

Jonathan challenged those who criticize the administration to compare it with previous administrations.

“And I have always challenged those who criticize us to compare what we have done in the various sectors with what others have done.”

“May be, we don’t need to enumerate it but If you look at the rail system of this country, what we have done within this period.”

“In fact, even in the oil industry that received so much attack, one thing that we have done was the Nigerian content law that has revolutionalised the oil industry.”

“There was a lot of fabrication going on in Lagos and other places that was never like this before.”

“Nigerians are playing key role in the oil sector and people sometimes forget it and even with that probably we have offended some people.”

“But the Nigerian content has really helped so many Nigerians to play big in the oil industry.”

“In the Agriculture and power sectors, even in foreign relations, from 1960 to date, we have been members of the security council as non permanent member five times, out of these two times have been within these five years.”

“We have been an independent nation for 55 years and been in the UN five times as member of the security council, out of that five times, two times were within this five times.”

“That shows clearly that the rest of the world appreciate our little contributions to global issues.”

“Even in education, the road systems, we have added Kashimbilla to our dams, sports we have done wonderfully well within this period.”

“We have achieved growth in MSME’s, and of course the financial inclusion within this period is more than ever before.”

“You can go on and mention almost all the sectors.’’

He said that his administration witnessed the longest politically motivated strike in the education sector as well as Boko Harram insurgency.

He further stated that the current fuel scarcity was politically motivated as the nation had 31 days reserve but those who wanted to bring the administration down refused to lift petroleum.

The President said he was grateful that the nation had navigated out of the challenges.

He thanked the Ministers, Nigerians and the media for their support, adding that the ministers were still serving and that the cabinet had not yet been dissolved until it completed the transition programmes.

NAN reports that the ministers took time to shower encomiums on the President for his stewardship and stressed for collaboration among them even out of office.

So why did you not probe the past administrations Mr Jonathan. If you were unable to do so ,that is your loss as a leader. If the new government is ready to probe past governments then let them do their work.
Your inability to do your job cannot be passed on the the incoming government else we will remain forever backward

This administration has really disappointed me. How can our president approve billions for the purchase of stove when this rural women in question don’t even have food to cook,. Things are getting worse and this man is approving money for things that does not add to our GDP.

I am more disappointed in you that you don’t appreciate the quest for clean energy use.

Could it be ignorance or mere hatred?

What more important than to stop people from destroying the Earth thru tree felling in the name of cooking?

How many hard working homes truly don’t have something to cook even if its carbohydrates?

This whole clean COOK STOVE energy quest if well administered will save our World!

a lot of you are stupidly blind to see how they frustrated his administration.the same politicians are sponsoring Bokoharam etc and you blame it on him?it is not ok for all of you to talk just because people around you are talking. my only problem was how he handled the Boko haram issue. every other thing Nigeria is facing has been there way before he became the president. just the way people are planning a better Nigeria is the same way a lot of people are planning Nigeria fails today. No need to insult him like you’ve been doing over the years. you asked for change..ok!!someone else is now about to rule, let us see how things will change.

I shudder at the ill thought response we give in this country.Kenya has been immersed in a bitter war with the Alshabab rebels/terrorists but I have not heard of the Head of State blaming political rivals.A commander in Chief who has the whole army under his beck and call but still blames political detractors and evil spirits when things go wrong.Kindly let me disagree with you on this one the outgoing president since the days of ailing Yaradua does not have the the political gout or will to fight any cabal.

I am intimidated by this man’s stupidity! Honestly, it’s overwhelming! In the midst of the crisis this country has been thrown into since April, this is his parting gift? Is he not aware that it was his administration’s responsibility to probe the one before his and that if there are any probes, the normal course of action is for incoming government to focus on those who have handed over (as for the last 4 years, they have been the ones managing the nation’s resources and wealth and are therefore primarily accountable)? Who are GEJ’s advisers?! Why do they allow him to disgrace himself like this? I am beginning to think that he’s really a lone-man wolf pack and does/says these stupid things without running them through others, hence his foibles over the years…

Given the circumstances in the country, I give you a pass mark.
Could you have done better ? Absolutely!
    You tried.
I am with you on probing. Any probing should start from start from 1960. If corruption just started in Nigeria , we should have been like Dubai before your administration got here. Time was, when Nigerian currency was worth more than the dollar and it was peace time…less expenditure.
Now, Mr. Buhari over to you
All am requesting from you is, NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS.
We need to know who is who,, the true Nigerians, who owns what and how.
Sometimes ordinary citizens are more corrupt than presidents. Strengthen our institutions. It is not enough to ask your cabinet members to declare their assets. Money could be put in other people’s accounts.
With the National ID#s EFCC and Banks could ask questions. Good Luck and may God continue to bless Nigeria.

you and I know that it is impossible to start from 1960… its too far gone so let us start from where we can. We need to start so that corruption will be eliminated, incoming governments will think twice before embezzling funds if we don’t start now when do we want to start? else Nigeria will continue to be like this for us and our unborn Generation

I asked the same question of ‘why did you not probe the previous regimes yourself?’ when i heard the comment, but answered for him. He did not come to power on a ticket to ‘change’ things. His was a continuation of an existing machinery. In fact, the statements we all got from each successor was that probe of the past was an irrelevant exercise.

In any case, it was and is still not visible in any way that Jonathan has any shred of the disposition required for such suggested effective probe. It was evident he would be a pacifist and he lived true to this disposition, culminating in the last act of permitting changes in the electoral system that could and did work against him and refusing to rock the nigerian boat by political shenanigans when the handwriting of election loss stared him in the face.

In other words, the man lived-out his personality which must have been evident before he became president, since he held earlier visible political positions. If thre is blame anywhere, it would be in Nigeria that elected him to power with his visible flaws. Did i hear that we did not elect him? Sorry, even the Lion of Bourdillion and many present-day chanters of ‘crucify him!’were instrumental to GEJ’s emergrnce at last but one election.

I see inevitable fate in all that have played out so far in the political scene. From the past odious leadership of civillian and military misrules, down to GEJ’s regime, were unfortunate phases of our nationhood. It could terminate now, or we could still continue the downward spiral.

Whatever happens, GEJ stands tall as having, either despite or through his inept but pacificist disposition, enabled Nigeria to attempt to move forward- by the singular portent of reformed electoral processes. He would stand taller if APC succeeds and further consolidates on the gains. The reference point of its start will always be GEJ who even stands on a better footing for heroism than GMB at this time on the singular act of insisting that personal ambition will never be worth a single drop of any Nigeria. GMB’s ambition cost so much blood. This can only be justified by exemplary leadership which will then justify the persistence of the ambition, seemingly at all cost.

The summation of this long essay? History may yet judge GEK kindly, as a man with obvious inadequacies that did not contribute much to expected development of Nigeria, BUT who, at the expense of personal ambition and contrary to the established pattern and practice of past rulers, enabled the midwifing of a new dawn.

I don’t usually comment on BN articles about our current (till tomorrow, phew) president’s antics., but this really is the height of rubbish.
    Shoroniyen?
It is far more likely that only this administration will be probed, unless there were several prior exceptional debts, since it’s the one handing over. Its actually that simple. It’s not a witch hunt, and you shouldn’t be afraid if you’re so squeaky clean. Right?
You had 6 years. Okay, I’ll give you the first 2, 4 years!! You had 4 years to do something tangible for this administration to be remembered for (in a good way), but nothing was even attempted until a few weeks before the election. After “conceding defeat”, it seems like all duties were relinquished, because Nigeria has nearly hit rock bottom, if we weren’t there already.
Surely, the next administration cannot be this bad? (I hope). We have suffered enough.

    • Sandi

      May 28, 2015 at 10:40 pm

It was never 6 years, He became acting President in May 2010 and is leaving May 2015, it’s not 2 extra years.

Guy he just listed what he did in those years, but you already had a reply before you read or maybe you didn’t even read. I know it is hard to read, it’s an unfortunate syndrome of today’s generation. But if you’re going to comment on something at least have the courtesy to read.

Also he never stated that he shouldn’t be probed, he has already welcomed that idea since. But this is a direct response to Danjuma that keeps running his mouth like he has diarrhea.

These old generals have ruined the country, and because this man has cut them off from continuous looting, they’re calling for him to be probed.

Why else will the generals start singing the same tune? (Danjuma, Obasanjo et al?)

Nigerians continue to allow your ancestors make a fool out of you ok

I support probe. Me, I like a clean Nigeria too. So bring it on! And lets have it from 1960 till date because even pots like TY Danjuma are demanding probe. We like to know how he and cohort was allocated oil wells and how he made all that money he donates over the place. Buhari should probe himself too. Oh yes! Cos he stole too as petroleum minister, head of state and as executive chairman of petroleum trust fund (PTF) _I don’t care what anybody calling him incorruptible tries to sell to gullible Nigerians, he ain’t clean full stop. No president in Nigeria history stole with impunity like those retired old generals. And when Buhari is done probing federal, state, local government records, we expect and refuse to accept as excuse for non-performance by 2019, that he probed away his four years. He must perform oO, the change is here and the clock will start ticking by 29th. Tick-tock.

we are our own problem in Nigeria. some of you here typing see, your father or uncles can never get chieftaincy title talk less of becoming a PRESIDENT or ruling Nigeria. where did he tell you people he was scared for them to probe his administration? he has been the most transparent president we’ve had in this country that is why some of you are coming here to type nonsense. if you people cannot in your little way help our country by doing what is right e.g..those of you spoiling our image overseas etc you can start fem your siblings, family members to make Nigeria a better place. what is wrong with investigating the others?you want him to take responsibility for all the past mistakes? just to be clear,i am also mad at him but i know I’m not stupidly blind to see how much they tried to ruin his efforts. all the APC members were part of PDP and they are the godfathers of corruption..period!! no matter how much of a good ruler you are,if the citizens are bad, nothing can change.so,while you are busy typing and insulting him, make your your brothers/sisters(family members are not armed robbers o.
you people should fear God o.

@Ada Nnewi our social media warrior same reply for @Robin Hood goes to you no need to type all over again.

THE PRESIDENT HAS NOT SAID ANYTHING WRONG. ALL PAST LEADERS MUST BE PROBED. THE PRESIDENT-ELECT SHOULD NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKE OF BEING TRIBALISTIC IN HIS PROBE AS HE DID IN 1984 BECAUSE IF HE DO THAT, HE WILL KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT FOOLS AND HE WILL BE READY TO BEAR THE CONSEQUENCIES.

Simple question… If u resume at a job newly and your predecessor gives you his/her handover note.. when you see something you don’t understand in the note, who will be your 1st port of call? your predecessor or the people before him?…. Just curious

@shineshine..AMENNNN! They both rock and are super classy. Nene, everything you said is true. Nnenne, you are just gracious and kind. I had a good laugh when you said you were disappointed in Ada nnewi. Someone shows you how uncouth she is REPEATEDLY and you still say you are disappointed. You are very patient and kind. GOALS! You’d think she’d come out a lil wiser after @happy took her to school on the ifeanyi ubah post.
My Nnewi “sister”, nne, there are levels to this. God knows most of us dont mind your comments on other issues but a political analyst, YOU ARE NOT! Nigerian politics is clearly too much for you and that is why you resort to insults instead of stating facts in a gracious manner. You always manage to sound like a loud brat when discussing politics. Its like having a discussion with a silly teenager. Your attitude stinks aite. 🙂

@Chichi, I wish l could love ur comment more than once. So insightful. Same for @ShineShineShine’s Shade. A lot of commenters resort to insults when obviously their thot process is shallow and pedestrian. On this blog, almost everybody is a specialist on everything.

It is too late to start calling for the probe of past administrations when you ought to have done it! GEJ and PDP obviously assumed they’ll remain in power forever, hence their lackadaisical attitude towards the management of Nigeria’s affairs. Well, the chicken has come home to roost, we shall be calling for the probe of this immediate past administration cos the allegations of corruption are just too many to be ignored. We need to recover as much of the stolen loot as we can. And I pray that God will help GMB to go after the thieves and manage this country better than any past leader we have ever had. We truly deserve this change!

It is simply called time management and multi- tasking. Life has many POSSIBILITIES, dear.
