Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has advised the media to “stop giving oxygen to the Boko Haram insurgency,” Cable reports.

He gave the advise while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily about the government’s progress with tackling terrorism.

Mohammed said:

“Just as I said in my meeting with the newspapers editors in Lagos on the 21st of December, the military has largely met the deadline to defeat Boko Haram, and the military has matched the capacity of terrorists to carry out the attacks they used to.

Of course, I also mentioned that the terrorists will continue to attack such targets as markets, motor parks, entertainment centres and houses of worship; and this is exactly what is going on.

We know that in an insurgency, the war does not end in one day. The attack on soft targets will continue, but we also want to appeal to the media to stop giving oxygen to the Boko Haram insurgency. When we glamorise the attacks, it gives the terrorists more life and in a time of insurgency like this, the media also has a role to play, which is not to glamorize the attacks.

What is happening is not unexpected; what is happening is what will happen in any insurgency. But the fact of the attack is that Boko Haram has been sufficiently defeated. Boko Haram can no longer take any territory away from us. And if you look at the context, about a year ago, Boko Haram had complete control of 20 out of 37 local governments in Borno state. There were about six local governments in Yobe and about four in Adamawa. If today, Boko Haram is operating from one or two local governments in the entire country, I think the military has largely succeeded in wiping out Boko Haram.

…It is possible for insurgents to lay ambush on the road; it does not mean they are in control of that local government. “We are not saying we are going to eliminate ambush or attacks overnight; it is never done in any insurgency. But what we are saying is that given the fact that just less than a year ago the entire north-east was almost in their complete control, and today they don’t have that kind of command, I think it is only one or two local governments in which they have way at all; and even with what the army have done in the last couple of months, we are very hopeful that before the end of the year a lot of progress would have been met. The media also needs to play its role now and that is also reporting equally the progress reports.”

@newbie , the ministers comment is not meant to silence the media or conceal the level of effectivemess vice versa of the govt on the war on terror. You must be able to read the post and understand the line of thought of the minister. There’s a way the media would report atrocities of Boko Haram that soon give them a celebrity status . Terrorism thrives on attention. The more the activities of the terrorist are talked about, the more determined they get to continue. It’s like a neighbourhood gang, the more the feedback suggest there’re the rave of the moment , the more encouraged the gang becomes. We must learn to read and understand the objective of the content of what we read. Lately it seem to have become the norm for people to be negative regarding every post. That’s not the way to go guys.

@Chief, l beg siddon for were contain you. The commenters on this blog are smart people. We know/understand propaganda when we hear/read it. Pls. were you sleeping on duty when the same Lair Mohammed continuously lied through his front teeth, while fanning the embers of hatred? This govt’ rode on the misfortune of the boko haram victims to make the last administration look bad. In a sane society, both the opposition and the govt in power would present a common front against terrorism on own soil. But, the APC used every means possible including the BBOG group to create disaffection. Unfortunately, Nigeria is the loser for this madness.

Some of us voiced our fears that BH would strike just to prove a point when the Dullard and his Liar Minister decided to feed the public that “technical” BS. Both should go tell the family that lost 20 members the meaning of “technical”.

Nigerians have the right to know. It is the govt’ that should not attempt to pull wool over our eyes. Thanks @Kande.

@chief pls just keep shut. …do you live the north? Do you know how people live in fear there? We need to be informed …people need to stay safe .imagine your whole family die in one day and its just a normal day to the govt of the day….all of a sudden we now realise terrorism thrives on attention. You are very right @ newbie this new administration has one agenda and that is to control the media in order to mislead vulnerable Nigerians like chief. You would think Book Haram has lost their grip but that’s a lie its only cos all their attacks aren’t reported anymore….its better to know the war is still on so there is pressure on all sides to end it…..I hate liers and schemers!!!!

It’s sad but I smh. The media have to report the news as is. They are not here to change the story or to taint it and make it look more palatable so as to make your government look good, Minister Sir.

The same media was used to rubbish the immediate past president and now you feel it’s the best time to tell them how to report stories abi?! Lai lai!!! E no go happen. The media should be left alone to do their work!

These APC people are full of propaganda!! The PDP people were a bunch of jokers whose sole ambition was to loot the treasury but the APC just takes the mickey!! Do you guys think we are fools? Abeg, you guys need to give us change because that’s what we voted for. Any other thing na TORI! Go and bring the CHANGE o! Nigerians are tired of these stories!!
