Awed by Monica New Year Guide - BellaNaija - January 2014Looking good and stylish is serious business these days, and at no point should you be caught without ‘repping’ your style. As a fashion lover, ‘repping’ your style goes beyond your outward appearance. It goes beyond the designer of your outfit, how expensive it is, how well you can combine colours and accessories, how good those clothes are on you or how much of a slayer you are.

Your style extends to what happens behind the scenes – in your closet. Those things people who know and love your style don’t get to see. Things like how well you pay attention to where your clothes are kept, the state of your accessories, how often you dry clean your clothes etc.

Many of you slayers of our time see your closets as a dumping ground. You throw clothes, both clean and dirty, wherever you please and often enter your own closets at your own risk. Don’t even get me started on those who sleep side by side with heaps of clothes. I used to be one of those people…until I wised up.

I, and I’m sure a lot of out there, feel that a true fashion lover sees a well organized closet as a true beauty to behold. You feel a sense of joy when you have your clothes neatly hanged where they ought to be, your shoes kept properly and accessories accounted for. Aside from the joy this brings, it also takes away the hassle and frustration cluttered closets bring.

But let’s be real. With some of our schedules and to-do lists, it feels like a whole day’s job just to keep up with closet maintenance. As a professional organizer, I know organizing isn’t something everyone is capable of doing like cooking noodles. Some even get confused on what to do and how to start, while others are just too busy to get started. And the key to having an amazing dream closet, it organization.

But let’s not let that stop us – if you feel you’re too lazy, busy or not bothered to organize your closets, you can hire me 🙂 or any other organizer out there. There are now a few people who have businesses like this in Nigeria.

Here are a few ideas that will ensure your closet reflects your style always;

1) Be Creative
There is a need for you to learn to organize your closet in a fun and attractive way, so be creative. Display your clothes and accessories like they do in stores and have fun with it. This not only makes dressing up enjoyable and fun, it also motivates you to always keep your closet tidy so you don’t loose the aesthetic.

And guess what? You don’t need to have a large collection in order to create a display. Aside from making dressing up fun and enjoyable, displaying your clothes and accessories gives you the feeling of shopping. Shopping in your own closet, how cool is that?

2) Make It Inspire You
Your closet should inspire you as well as others to want to have a closet like yours. There is no joy or beauty in having a confusing jumbled mess of clothes in one’s closet. Having your clothes neatly placed in your closets, and your shoes nicely tucked away can create a relaxing ambiance for you when you’re in your room. Studies have shows that they help reduce stress and relax you, which gives you a calm place to think and create more amazing outfits.

Whereas a chaotic closet just makes you want to spend more time away from home.

3) Make It A Safe Haven
Your closet should be your heaven and one of the most important places in your home. You may not know this, but most of the time while you’re in your room, you can also see your closet. The state of your closet not only affects your clothes, but also your mental state as well.

Having a clean & neat place to store your clothes reflects positively on your style and your mind.

4) Make It Comfortable
Now, I know some of you may not have enough room to work with, but there is always a way to make your closet comfortable.

You could try placing a chair close to your closet to make searching for clothes and co-coordinating outfits easier, or you could put a mannequin close by to see what your outfits would look like before dedicating time to trying them on.

It’s fun and playful and will make every time you go over to your closet a fun & adventurous one.
