MTN Foundation Makes Life Better for People with Impaired Hearing | Begins Distribution of 1,500 Hearing Aids in Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue and Katsina

In keeping to its promise of providing relief to people hard of hearing (HOH), the MTN Foundation (MTNF) has commenced the distribution of 1,500 hearing aids across Nigeria. The distribution that began in Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue and Katsina, will continue in the coming week in Anambra and Lagos.

The beneficiaries of the hearing aids devices are those who passed the audiometric assessment exercise conducted by certified ENT nurses and doctors. The successful beneficiaries are now proud owners of top of the range hearing aids devices.

Lending credence to the initiative in Bauchi State, Dr. Isuwa Jauruman, from the Department of Special Education, Faculty of Education, University of Jos Nigeria, stated that the MTN Foundation has always championed the cause of people living with disabilities. According to him, “the hearing aids will help in amplifying the sound heard by the patient and enable them differentiate and process various sounds which they would normally not be able to process. It would also help boost their self-esteem and give them confidence to go through life unhindered by their disabilities.”

MTN Foundation has also partnered with International Center for Prevention of Deafness and Rehabilitation of Hearing Impaired Persons (ICPDRHIP), to help in the fitting and post review activities of the hearing aids given to the beneficiaries. This is to ensure sustainability that will give maximum value and impact of the devices to the beneficiaries.

The Hearing Aid Support Project (HASP) is one of the many MTNF initiatives in the disability space. Others include, the MTNF Disability Support Project (DSP) which provides aids and appliances to physically challenged persons across the country, MTNF Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students (SSBS) and MTNF EyeRis project which restores sight to persons with sight defects.
