BN Style: Find out The effect of ‘Enclothed Cognition’ & How Fashion Affects Your Brain | Watch
Ever wanted to feel smarter? A simple answer to that might just be as easy as switching out your favorite jacket to a white lab coat. In this short video, Elle.com teamed up with the NPR podcast Invisibilia and conducted a color test to see if changing your outfit improves mental performance.
The people who wore the lab coats did better in the colour test than the people who wore street clothes. When people were given the same while coat this time referred to as a ‘painter’s white coat’, it made no significant difference. When the coat was next to them, it made no difference either.
The conclusion? We feel smarter when we wear lab coats – which is what doctors or scientists usually wear and they are regarded as really smart people. This effect is called ‘Enclothed Cognition‘ – which according to them means that clothes “carry moods and abilities that exist outside of you, into your blood stream your brain and change you in quiet but measurable ways… A momentary shift in identity” It does!
