The Nigerian woman, Franca Asemota, 38, accused of human trafficking in the UK has been convicted and jailed for 22 years.

She was accused of luring mainly orphans from remote Nigerian villages with the promise of jobs and education. Prosecutors also said she also used “witchcraft, threats, ‘Ju-Ju’ rituals and sexual violence to ensure they did as they were told before being sold to the sex industry in Europe”. Click here if you missed it.

According to UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), she was convicted on Wednesday at Isleworth Crown Court on 12 counts of conspiracy to traffic persons for sexual exploitation, trafficking persons outside of the United Kingdom for sexual exploitation and assisting unlawful immigration. She was handed the 22-year jail term on Thursday.

“Auntie Franca” as she is known, used Heathrow Airport as a hub to smuggle at least 40 children and young adults into Europe.

Franca was arrested in Benin City, Nigeria, in March 2015 following an operation co-ordinated by the National Crime Agency, working in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Once her identity was confirmed Asemota was then extradited to the UK in January this year.

As a Benin girl, growing up everybody knows if you get sponsored by a madam or auntie abroad you’re bound for prostitution, even the most remote villages knows that. They even beg and run after these sponsors, so many girls did not even wait to finish school before running to Europe, we are talking about girls as young as 12-14. Some poor parents were willing to disown uncooperative girls, mothers will give daughters tips on how to attract “oyibo”. Finally it was an honour to have a daughter, because she’ll go to Europe and relieve the family from poverty. Pastors and prophets were in on it too, offering prayers and love potions for success in Europe, juju business was flourishing. They even swear oaths to repay huge sums of money when they get abroad. When they get to Europe and realise that it would take a lifetime to pay the promised money ( unless willing to sleep with animals), they run to the authorities and cry sexual exploitation and slavery.

I mostly agree. I wouldn’t say that girls as young as 12 were ‘running to Europe’.
Makes me cringe when you see the Madams hosting these elaborate birthday bashes in Europe and you know where they got their income from. The government needs to do better and create opportunities at home so these women won’t be lured into going abroad. In addition, the mentality of European streets paved in gold needs to die.
