Suicide Bomb Attack at a Wedding Party in Southern Turkey Left at least 50 Persons Dead

At least 50 people were killed on Saturday when a suspected suicide bomber detonated his explosives among people dancing on the street at a wedding party in the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep, the local governor’s office said.

President Tayyip Erdogan said it was likely that Islamic State militants had carried out the late-night attack, the deadliest bombing this year in Turkey.

The local governor’s office said in a statement 50 people were killed in the bombing, and more wounded were still being treated in hospitals around the province.

“The celebrations were coming to an end and there was a big explosion among people dancing,” said 25-year-old Veli Can. “There was blood and body parts everywhere,” Can added.

Blood stains and burns marked the walls of the narrow lane where the wedding party was attacked while women in white and checkered scarves cried sitting cross-legged and waiting outside the morgue for word on missing relatives.

At least 12 people were buried on Sunday, but other funerals would have to wait because many of the victims were blown to pieces and DNA forensics tests would be needed to identify them, security sources said.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, or HDP, said in a statement that the wedding was for one of its members, and women and children had been among those killed.

Mahmut Togrul, an HDP lawmaker from Gaziantep, around 40 km north of the border with Syria, told Reuters it was a Kurdish wedding.

Islamic State has been blamed for suicide bombings on Kurdish gatherings in the past as militants try to stir ethnic tensions.

“It was carried out like an atrocity,” witness Ibrahim Ozdemir said. “We want to end these massacres. We are in pain, especially the women and children,” he added.

Turkey is still tense after an attempted coup on July 15 which Ankara blames on U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gulen. He has since denied the charge.

Everyday we read about atrocities committed by muslims in the name of God. Yesterday, I read a harrowing story about an Eriterean lady that was captured and turned into a sex slave by ISIS. As a northerner, I have interacted with muslims all my life and I can confidently say, without mincing words, that Islam promotes and encourages violence and the average muslim has extremist views. I can never understand the thought process of muslims. If all the atrocities being committed by muslims were committed by christians, it would have resulted in sectarian conflict. They always say that Islam preaches peace but those fanatics who maim and kill quote verses from the koran to back up their actions. I almost shit in my pants the day an erstwhile muslim friend of mine told me that if their imam tells them to take up arms against christians, he would have no choice but to comply. If u’ve never lived in the north, you won’t understand how fanatical the average muslim is. As a northern christian, believe me when I say that muslims are demons in human flesh. They might be a bit reluctant to start a jihad like ISIS but one thing they are not reluctant about is providing financial support to those who are willing to start a jihad.

Does it make sense to you that Muslims are killing fellow Muslims? It’s all political. Stop all that talk insulting an entire faith. God will hold you accountable.

I use to believe this “it’s all political” excuse but I’ve changed my mind. The moderate Muslims are beginning to see that Islam at its’ core is extreme. There is already this inner war of Islamic conservatism vs liberalism. Watch YouTube videos over Muslims discussing the issues they have.

They know there is a problem, but it’s going to take a lot of Imams and religious leaders to adapt to reality for anything to change.

@Amin, Here we go again…..another bigot who has lost the plot. This is a political fight for power. They are just using Gods name in vain. The victims ARE Muslims. The picture you see is that of an Islamic burial The perpertrators claim to be Muslims. Nowhere does Islam encourage violence and you’re obviously biased and mingling with the wrong crowd.
Look at your reasoning for a second…if it was an Islamic thing then the world would’ve been in turmoil since 1400 years ago when Islam was created. Infact, Hitler who claimed to be a Christian wouldn’t have made history if indeed Muslims were the violent ones.
These issues are rooted from the various middle eastern political conflicts and people like you are adding salt to the wound by promoting hate with your comments. Shame on this way of thinking.

You’re all entitled to your thought processes. Islam has existed for 1400 yrs so if it was core Islam why is it that the world hasn’t been in this type of chaos for that long? It’s common sense. Even Hitler that claimed to be Christian would not have gained the notoriety he did if core Islam Is indeed responsible then it would’ve been responsible for World War One and 2.
But people allow their biases to come between them and their reasoning. There are definitely a group of people who are fueling their agenda by misinformation and misinterpretation of gullible people out there.
2 people can read a text and come up with different meanings or understandings. The root of this chaos is politics and power hunger.

“why is it that the world hasn’t been in this type of chaos” Please which world have you been living in??? Go back to the history books please.

Christianity has had similar problems. I would be a hypocrite to deny that. But Christianity has been through a renaissance. People killed using the name of “God” and “Christianity” earlier and got away with it. Today if you try that nonsense, very few Christains will support you. You can kill in the name of the devil or yourself. The core of Christianity is selfless love. What is the core of Islam?

Islam needs a renaissance just like Christianity has. There has been debates about this in the Muslim community. Good thing is that Muslims are getting more exposed and educated and willing to accept change.

I am a female from the southwestern part of Nigerian who is muslim (in that order). I recently moved to the north for work and up till now I am still trying to over come the culture shock when it comes to the practice of Islam here, one thing I have noticed is that some people’s perception and understanding of Islam has been tainted by that of culture- they find it difficult to separate the 2. A lot of muslims practice Islam blindly with no understanding of the Qur’an which is originally in Arabic-if we want an end to all this violence muslims must be encouraged to read the English version of the Qur’an , this will put an end to a lot of misinformation. But really Islam promotes peace and abhors violence. There is a curse on a muslim who kills another for no reason-how can you kill 50 without any provocation and call yourself one? It just makes no sense!
