Afghan Interior Ministry said the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) was attacked by suspected militants on Wednesday in an assault that started with a loud blast followed by gunfire.

Sediq Sediqi, the Spokesman for the ministry, said that the police had cordoned off the university and efforts were being made to get more details.

Reports say at least one death was recorded in the attack.

Ahmad Mukhtar, an Afghan journalist, said he and some of his friends escaped but several others, including visitors and professors were trapped inside.

He said “some of the professors were teaching when the attack rocked the institution”.

Meanwhile, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
