American Student Released from North Korean Prison, Dies Days Later

U.S citizen Otto Warmbier who was arrested while on a tourist visit to North Korea in January 2016 has died following his release from prison, The Washington Post reports.

The University of Virginia student was tried and convicted of stealing a propaganda sign and sentenced to 15-years in prison with hard labour in January.

North Korea claimed that he started showing signs of Botulism – a rare illness which can cause total body paralysis, difficulty in breathing and death in some cases – in March 2016 and was given a sleeping pill and has been in a coma since then.

North Korea returned him to America, stating that it was doing so on humanitarian grounds.

He died while receiving treatment at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The bereaved Parents have blamed the North Korean government for the death of their son. “Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today,” the Warmbiers said.

Findings from tests carried out at the Cincinatti Medical center, showed that respiratory arrest, which is caused by a lack of oxygen and blood in the brain, led to his condition.

Warmbier’s is being mourned by family and friends. His death has also raised political debates between American lawmakers and questions in America-North Korea  relations.

But the mistake has been made already (hindsight). There is hardly anyone who has not at one time or the other been to places we shouldn’t have gone, especially university students. Besides, there were other students there so it is not as if he went somewhere no one else has ever been. The real question is, should he have been killed as a result? That North Korea violates human rights does not mean we should now normalize and accept it as their way. Even if he did steal a poster (which there’s no proof of, the videos do not show a face), is whatever is on that poster worth human life? I’m sure he didn’t plan to die this young.

Thank you, i mean why would anyone want to visit that country, they obviously mishandled him and this led to his death.

That North Korean president is evil. He executed his own uncle and also eliminated his brother. He will not end well. Very insecure Coward. What threat does a college kid pose? May he Rest In Peace. That place is the lions den and no amount of adventure or curiosity should take anyone to that country.

There is a reason why it is said “when in Rome, behave like the Romans”. I do not see anything wrong with him going to North Korea especially since he was enroute a study trip. However anyone with knowledge of how North Korea works should mind their business, no need for over sabi. Ask few questions if you must but for the most observe, don’t bother with expressing your opinion or wait until your flight is out of their air space. He did not deserve that kind of treatment and may he rest in peace.

So sad. Was hoping he would make a full recovery. According to what I heard, he went with a tour group to China. It was reported that the tour company tricked him into going to North Korea. So sad. May his soul rest in peace.
