Pearls Africa announces the launch of its female focused tech hub called “Lady Labs”.

Lady labs is a space for girls from the poorest communities to get a functional I.T skill; a space for ladies studying computer science in tertiary institutions to gain practical experience; and a co-working space for female tech founders. With this arrangement Pearls Africa believes it can create a community of support where the female co-founder will inspire and mentor young ladies in the University or Polytechnic and they in turn will support and mentor the younger girls from undeserved communities.

The Primary aim of Lady Labs  is to serve as a bridge between the middle class ladies (entrepreneurs and professionals) and the poorest girls who are welcomed to the table because of the I.T skills they possess. Over the last three years Pearls Africa through its GirlsCoding initiative has provided computer training to girls from the slum and placed them on internships in tech companies. Lady labs is a first step in scaling this practice to reach more girls and bring the mentors closer.

Also, through research, hackertons, inter-organizational collaborations and ethnographic studies, Lady labs will seek to build products that address female folk. It would be a safe assumption that ladies would be better equipped to solve problems that affect them.

This launch will not only be an opportunity for guests to become acquainted with the girls but also an opportunity for Pearls Africa’s team to unveil their plans towards harnessing potential and increasing impact in the technology ecosystem.

These are the programs that will run at the hub:

  • I.T training
  • Mentoring Sessions
  • Meet ups with professional ladies/mentors
  • Collaboration between professional women and young girls
  • Capacity Development/ Life skills
  • Safe space for girls (leadership and empowerment of women and girls)

Why Lady Labs Innovation Hub?

With the rise of globalization, we have become more aware that we share one common humanity, particularly with the rise of social media. One woman’s frailty is another woman’s insecurity. The manifestation of this is that if one society is fragile, it translates into the insecurity of another society across the world.

This is a clear and present danger, which calls out to individuals to develop strategies to bridge the economic divide which is perhaps the dominant factor causing this phenomenon.

The girl child, who is left at the back of the queue regarding the opportunities in her society, feels the biggest impact of this economic divide.

If you are blessed with the means, feel free to walk into Lady labs and lets talk about how we can raise of generation of girls with means.
