Japanese Princess Ayako relinquishes Royalty as she marries Commoner | BellaNaijaPrincess Ayako of the Japanese imperial family has given up her royal title after marrying a commoner Kei Moriya.

The 28-year-old princess, according to The Independent, married 32-year-old Moriya, an employee of shipping company Nippon Yusen.

Although Japanese royals have been given the freedom to marry anyone for the past 3 generations, women in the imperial family give up their status when they marry commoners, while commoners who marry princes become a part of the imperial family.

Princess Ayako, who will become Ayako Moriya after the wedding papers are signed, married in a traditional ceremony at Tokyo’s Meiji Shrine.

“I’m filled with joy to get married and to have so many people visit us at the Meiji Shrine and congratulate us,” she said after the ceremony.

Patriarchy strikes again. See men, this is how your rules screws over other men.

@Cherie, was it also “patriarchy” when King Edward abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson?

The comparison is wrong. In the days of Walis Simpson, If it were a sitting queen who wanted to marry a divorcee husband she would also have to abdicate. Here the rules apply equally.

In case of the Japanese royal family, males who marry commoners DON’T lose their royal titles but females who marry commoners DO lose their royal titles. The rules discriminates against females.

The rule is absurd, it discriminates against women, just women!, while the same sanction isn’t granted to the men, some of these royals need to grow up on their rules and regulations, the world is obviously evolving.

The rule is absurd, it discriminates against women, only the women!,like why isn’t the same sanction given to the men, some royals sincerely have to shed some annoyance and irritation off their rules and regulations, as the world is evolving.
