After weeks of interviewing witnesses, hearings, and hundreds of pages documenting Trump’s abuse of power and obstructing Congress, The U.S. House of Representatives has finally impeached President Donald Trump, BBC Reports.

This makes Donald Trump the third president in history to be impeached and possibly removed from office.

Here’s all you need to know about the impeachment process:

The House voted almost entirely along party lines: The House voted 230-197 to charge Trump with abuse of power and 229-198 to charge him with obstruction of Congress. Just two Democrats voted against both articles.

There was a six-hour debate: An intense debate over Trump’s impeachment played out for hours on the House floor ahead of the impeachment votes. In one-to-two minute speeches, Democrats and Republicans argued about the reason they were voting for or against impeachment.

Trump acknowledged the vote to impeach him during his presidential rally: The votes occurred in the middle of his speech at his nearly two-hour campaign rally in Michigan yesterday. It appeared he learned of the vote tallies from an aide.

Here’s what is expected to happen next: Now that the vote has been concluded, the impeachment proceedings will be moved to the Senate, where a trial is expected in January. The Senate will decide whether or not to convict Trump and remove him from office.

The historic votes on Wednesday evening, which won the support of most democrats in the house chamber and no Republican, leave Trump as only the third president in U.S. history to be impeached, although he is likely to win his party’s nomination for re-election.
