Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) was reported in the news this week saying he does not know any member of Boko Haram sect despite speculations that he was involved with the sect. He said this in an interview with journalists at his party’s national secretariat in Abuja during the party’s Board of Trustees meeting. “I do not know any member of the Boko Haram sect. I do not believe and I do not know of any religion that will go and kill people, burn schools” he was quoted as saying.

The court trial of the Otedola-Farouk $620,000 bribe scandal resumed on Thursday with the mention in court of a N250bn libel suit instituted by Femi Otedola against the National Assembly; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; and the lawmaker, Farouk Lawan. In the case, Otedola is asking Justice Peter Kekemeke of an Abuja High Court to order the respondents to pay him the sum for the loss of goodwill and patronage he suffered as a result of their actions in the course of a probe into the management of fuel subsidy regime in the country.***
The Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole on Friday dissolved the State Executive Council. Mr Oshiomhole, while addressing the commissioners at a valedictory EXCO meeting in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said working with them in the last four years has provided good leadership for the people which led to his re-election. The state Attorney-general and Commissioner for Justice, Osagie Obayuwana thanked the Governor for giving them the opportunity to serve and described the experience as a school of leadership for them. Mr Oshiomhole will be sworn-in for a second term on Monday 12 November 2012.***
Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Professor Dibu Ojerinde has said that the proposed computer based method for conducting the examination is aimed at checking malpractice, eliminating cases of incomplete results and above all, to release results within 30 minutes after the examination. The proposed method, according to him is for the candidates to write the examination on-line from 2013.***
At least 100 members of the Biafra Zionist Movement were arrested in Enugu this week after they declared independence and raised a Biafran flag during a march in the state. The last time a Biafran flag was raised (1967), there was war in Nigeria. The arrested men have been charged with treason. The Biafran Zionist Movement members first gathered to celebrate Ojukwu’s birthday, then marched through the streets again the following day supporting independence for Biafra.***
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has said the reported willingness of Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to discuss with the Federal Government should not be taken seriously, as the sect is incapable of dialogue. According to him, with an ideology of violence and with many different factions, the sect is not in a position to call for dialogue. Describing the sect as part of an international terrorism campaign, he explained that right from the outset, there were fears that it had links with al-Shabaab and al-Qaeda and was sending people to Mauritania and Somalia for training.***
Many passengers escaped death when two trains collided in Lagos on Wednesday. Four people were however injured. It was learnt that the accident was due to the absence of signal operator at the Mushin Station terminus in Lagos. It was gathered that the signal operator had gone to defecate and asked his assistant to take over but his assistant forgot, leading to the collision. A trader near the rail track, Ngozi Nelson, told Punch that the accident occurred because the train operators were not properly guided.***
A six-storey shopping mall collapsed in the Ghanaian capital Accra on Wednesday, with at least four people so far confirmed dead. Police said around 50 employees were reported to be in the building before the collapse on Wednesday morning. It was not immediately clear if customers were also inside, with one worker saying the mall had yet to open. President John Dramani Mahama suspended his campaign ahead of December 7 elections and offered prayers for those trapped. Thousands thronged the site, including family members in search of relatives.***
