Sokoto Assembly Repeals Traffic Law | To Set Up Traffic Management Body

The Sokoto State House of Assembly has passed a law to repeal the Sokoto State Road Traffic Law of 1996.

In its place the assembly approved the enactment of Sokoto Roads Traffic Management Law, 2016.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the assembly took the decision after ratifying the report of its Committee on Works and Transport during its sitting on Thursday.

The report, presented by the committee’s Chairman, Sani Yakubu, said that the new law would create “one management, administrative and enforcement agency for the state”.

“This will also empower it to enforce road traffic law and regulations, environmental and other public health laws and regulations, as well as providing supplementary/vigilante security in the state,” it said.

He explained that the new law had provided for the establishment of marshals to regulate, control and manage traffic, enforce environmental and public health laws.

The Deputy Speaker, Abubakar Magaji, who presided over the sitting, said after deliberations by the lawmakers, that the law would be sent to the governor for assent.

In another development, the Assembly has called on the state government to consider the reconstruction of the 10 kilometre Gwadabawa-Atakwanyo road.

NAN reports that, this followed a motion moved by Abdullahi Garba (APC- Gwadabawa North) and seconded by Sa’idu Ibrahim (APC- Sabon Birni South).

He said that the road, which was constructed in 1987, needed urgent rehabilitation to make it motorable and alleviate the suffering of villagers using it.
