BN Exclusive: “The Biggest Misconception About Me Since BBA has to be My True Identity”: Vina Longpet, BBA Amplified Finalist, Sets the Record Straight!

A vibrant, formidable  contestant on the just concluded Big Brother Amplified Series, 26 year old Malvina Kwanjap Longpet  or ‘Vina’ as she is popularly known by her fans, has received a lot of press since her exit from the Big brother house. BellaNaija.com Features Editor, Glory Edozien, caught up with Vina about some of the more controversial aspects during her stay in the house, her relationship with Karen, Lomwe and what’s next on her agenda.

BN: Tell us who is Vina?

Vina: Vina is a young female; fun loving, talkative but knows when to listen and take charge.

BN: Why did you enter the Big Brother Competition?

Vina: I did not really enter like I wanted to. I was asked by my cousin to accompany her to the auditions so she would not sit alone. When we got there she asked me to go in with her. I hesitated but went in, did my thing and that’s how I got to this point today.

BN: How did it feel having another Nigerian in the house?

Vina: Having another Nigerian in the house was a breath of fresh air even though we did not really stay in the same house.

BN: What do you think has been the biggest misconception about you, since you featured on BBA?

Vina: The biggest misconception about me since BBA has to be my true identity. People have called me fake because I have a British Accent. One thing people don’t understand is that when you grow up in another man’s country for 15 years you tend to pick up a lot and you are not aware till it’s pointed out to you by others. BBA viewers did not know how to relate to me because I was different from a lot of the house mates but I will not hold it against anyone. We are only human and we tend to frown on what we do not understand. I am a full Nigerian who grew up in theUK, but has since been back to serve my country.

BN: Did you have any strategy going into the house? If you did what was it and did it change?

Vina: Going into the house I did not have any strategy, I went in there to have fun, meet new people and hopefully change my life. I had fun, I met great people who have in turn changed my life.

BN: Now that you’ve been out of the house for a few weeks, and you’ve had time to reflect on the show, is there anything you would have changed/ any regrets?

Vina: Looking back at all the events that happened in the BBA house, I will not change anything from the experience

BN: There’s been a lot of talk about you and Karen pre and post BBA, can you please set the record straight for us?

Vina: Hmmm, well I have not heard anything about the post BBA. I did not know Karen before I went into the house but Karen knew a lot more about me. It was just a very strange coincidence that we both come from Jos and we have the same circle of friends. To set the record straight I have no beef with Karen, and when it comes to working together I am happy to do that. At the end of the day we are home and at least one of us brought the money back.

BN: How do you respond when people label you as stuck up?

Vina: “Stuck up”, wow, I just tell them I was raised well and if anyone has anything to say about the way I am they should speak to the people who raised me. My parents.

BN: Tell me something about you, that you didn’t feel was adequately captured during the BBA process?

Vina: I am very motherly, As a Virgo, I have the natural instinct to help people and to care for them and their well being. However that has been misunderstood as me being bossy and stuck up. Oh well, we cannot all be perfect.

BN: Did you ever think you would win?

Vina: No I never really thought that I would win. Only because I went in with the mindset thatNigeria had won 2 times in a row, there was no way another Nigerian would win, let alone me.

BN: How did it feel to not walk away with the final prize?

Vina: I was sad, and any one would feel bad, but I was happy to be out of the house, and finally seeing my family. I broke down that night because I saw my parents for the first time since January. For me seeing them at that moment was worth more than the prize.

BN: Do you think you could have won if Karen wasn’t in the house?

Vina: Like I always say, I didn’t go into the Big Brother expecting anything but the experience and how it would shape me as a person afterwards. It is hard to imagine this experience any other way, so to imagine me spending three months in the house without any of the house mates is tasking. If Karen was not present, I believe the best person would have won and that decision would have been completely up toAfrica…our fans- the viewers.

BN: What is your relationship with Lomwe really?

Vina: Lomwe and I got along excellently because we shared similar childhood experiences. He was someone I could identify with and someone I felt understood me the most. We became very good friends and even though some may see that as an alliance, our friendship made my experience in the Big Brother house more pleasant. We are good friends and that is all there is to that. I am still in touch with most of the house mates. I speak to Hanni, Sharon and Lomwe occasionally and we exchange emails.

BN: Since you left the house, which of the housemates have you been in touch with?

Vina: Since leaving the house, I have been in touch with Hanni, Lomwe, sharon O (who is currently inNigeria for my Birthday), Vimbai, Miss Confidence, Bernadina, Nic, and Millicent. I also stay in touch with them all via Twitter and facebook but most of the time we just call each other to have a little chat. I do miss them.

BN: How easy/difficult has it been coping with the popularity and press after BBA?

Vina: I was not prepared for the amount of people who were following me while I was in the house. Good and bad stories. I have read so much about me that I wasn’t even aware of. The press, of course have been there and hey they have a job to do and I respect them for doing it.

BN: Did you learn anything from the BBA experience?

Vina: I have learnt to be very calm and patient with people who do not understand me. I have also learnt that to a certain extent, silence is golden

BN: You are from Jos, what are your thoughts on the recent crisis there?

Vina: I am very saddened by the current situation in Jos. Innocent lives are being taken away. We are young people and our lives are being cut short. Jos is the land of peace and Tourism, we need to take it back to the way it was. Jos is my Home and I love it no matter what.

BN: What is the most difficult decision you ever had to make?

Vina: I have made so many difficult decisions but the most recent one I made was the decision to stay in Jos over the Christmas period during the Jos December riot. I could not leave my family there alone, even though my manager called me several times and pleaded with me to leave, I stayed with my family because I believe in togetherness…we needed each other.

BN: Do you plan on working with any of the housemates in the future?

Vina: Yes I will be working with Lomwe on his new Album, will be working with Hanni (Siesta Sisters reppin it), and with Karen if the opportunity arises.

BN: What’s next for Vina?

Vina: What is next for me? Well am back serving as a Youth Corper at 99.9 KISS FMAbuja on the breakfast show. However like Lomwe said once in the house the sky is not the limit, you make the limit yourself, so it’s up up up from here.

park well jo!!! i lived in jand all ma life and i dont have ur kinda accent. and sumtims u switch btw South African, Ghanian , Nigerian and uk accent….. hehehe

    • molly September 14, 2011 at 11:06 pm

my dear, not every1 in the uk speaks with the same accent. It depends on ur environment, so d fact that u n Vina don’t speak d same doesn’t mean her accent is fake. Also d fact that she moved there as a child is an obvious precedent to having a British accent. Children tend to want to blend and adapt to whatever environment they live in and so they pick accents.

      • me September 17, 2011 at 1:18 am

I live in the UK, and I for all this time i’v been here, I have heard most of all the differing accents here in britain. For all I care, Vina’s accent is a far cry from any UK accent. To me sounds more like the “Lekki-British” accent or what some people call the “posh” Nigerian accent which some Nigerians try to speak here as they are trying to copy the british accent which is not that easy to copy unlike American accent. If you live in the UK and hear any variation of the british accent spoken by another person, you will automatically know the difference.
I really don’t hate on Vina, as a matter of fact she was decent on BBA and her Lekki-british accent is well spoken (which I like anyway). As for her behaviour, from what she said, she happens to be an only child so i’m not gonna question her character as it may not be entirely a fault of hers and I’l leave it at that.

I love her!!! :) She came across very well in the interview

  • joy September 14, 2011 at 11:38 am

Vina left Nigeria for England at 11/12,I think its totally understandable if she speaks with an accent.I know people who left when they were as old as 20 and have been away for just 5years but speak more fo-ne than Queen Elizabeth. This misconception started cos most Nigerians preferred Karen and could relate with her better on the show and so felt the need to make excuses for her short comings by criticising anything un-Karen. Vina is a cool girl, the only thing that sucked abt her during the 91 days was her following Lomwe like a silly puppy and the times she took being HOH to mean being CinC.

  • dyn September 14, 2011 at 11:45 am

    I don’t care, I don’t like you more than I do.

  • uju September 14, 2011 at 11:48 am

thumps up gurl, i luv u

  • eloho September 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

VINA! VINA! VINA! who gave you that dress? Abeg go and flog the person very well! I never had a problem with your accent, I liked it! Being stuck up, I think really showed after your ‘altercation’ (using your words) with Karen, you went into the Diary Room and washed her down. You did well in the house and that’s what’s important! As for Lomwe, stop forming, you like the boy!

  • partyrider September 14, 2011 at 12:44 pm

    NEXT please..

  • huh?! September 14, 2011 at 12:47 pm

na wa oooo My fellow nigerianssssss!! Being razz doesn’t mk u “real” n having an accent doesn’t mk u “fake” either…inferiority complex is BAD n it shows thru all ur negative comments here,if she decides to fake an accent or not it won’t affect ur account balance so kip it moving!!

    • feran September 14, 2011 at 4:36 pm

hmmm!!!! thank you my sister. The girl has lived abroad for most of her life, if she speaks with an accent so what??? Once you are loud, obnoxious, rude and speak pidgin fluently, then you are not fake abi????

      • nephetiti September 15, 2011 at 12:48 pm

i have siblings who have lived in the UK for 25 years, they speak normally. My point is whther you have lived in the UK since you were a child or not, it’s a free world abeg, if she wants to speak with an accent people should leave her alone jo, she really does not owe anybody any explanation. Speaking broken english does not make you a better person and neither does speaking with an British accent make you a bad person and vice versa.Let’s all live and let live biko.

    • emi September 14, 2011 at 5:07 pm

@huh i couldn’t have said it better. I don’t get all the karen is real business….. its like we all suddenly say that decency is bad and that karen’s brashness represents us as a people. I watched the show and to the bes of my knowledge Vina behaved decently. she’s very intelligent and yet she didn’t show off about it unlike mumba who kept going on and on about her intelligent self. I did not think she was bossy as HoH , i think that as women when try to put in our best at things, we are often misunderstood and tagged bossy. I personally know that karen does not represent me as a person and truth be told i was mostly embarrassed as a Nigerian at her behavior in the BB house. I do not equate brashness to being real. There is nothing real about being brash at all.

    • Truth be told September 14, 2011 at 7:38 pm

Thank you o. I couldn’t say it better

  • Joe Malone September 14, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Still cant seem to string a sentence together without Lomwe in it. Girl is still obsessed with the guy..i feel sorry for her boyfriend cos if Lomwe wanted her she will jump him in a second! Unfortunately for her, Lomwe prefers pretty chics. Sorry Vina get overr it already!

  • mexx September 14, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Vina is messed up. she is so out of celebrity league,I not hate her doh

  • D Pretty September 14, 2011 at 2:04 pm

VINA VINA VINA…Ur dress sense is so DEAD.

  • vanessa September 14, 2011 at 2:43 pm

first time am commenting on bella naija, but i cant jes help it but to comment on ds vina chic,VINA FOR HEAVEN SAKE U VE NO BRITISH ACCENT,as far as i am concerned u were making noise in the house,u were d worse dressed housemate..u are far from being a celebrity.pls speak like a naija, cos i wonder were u got that accent of urs.ITS NO BRITISH ACCENT OK,.BLACK MAMBA

  • Doosh September 14, 2011 at 3:44 pm

  • Enque September 14, 2011 at 3:48 pm

  • loergirl September 14, 2011 at 3:56 pm

my friend “huh?” hold it dia! who said being razz is real. doesnt tiwa savage have a bit of british accent? people still love her. what about chydyma with an accent? abeg. its about the attitude. thae accent is plus one to the list of her “donts” including her fashion sense>

  • The Kinkster September 14, 2011 at 4:27 pm

It wasnt just the accent. She was basically a very boring HM who happened to also have delusions of grandiose, end of story. Park for corner abeg

  • The Kinkster September 14, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Delsuions of grandeur I meant! 3rd time lucky, chai!!!!

  • Lbn September 14, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Vina is a family friend of mine so I can comment based on direct experience. She is a spoiled brat and has a tendency to be stuck up and stand-offish. She does walk “with her nose up in the air” at times. However, she is great with a family and a fab friend to her close knit circle. She can be really nice at times too. As for comments on her accent, she isn’t faking it. Of course she knows how to relate naija-style but that isn’t natural to her and I think it’s unfair to judge her based on that! I’ve got a funny story about her visa interview at the British High Commission when she was first moving to the UK but I wont blow the girl’s cover like that…

  • steezz.com September 14, 2011 at 6:54 pm

I met Vina for the first time at Booling 4 boobs, 4b she went 4 BBA and whn i talked 2 her, she responded very well. I didn’t notice any sign of the “stuck up” trait in her. I tink it’s all in the manner of approach. But i also tink she’s the type dat like sticking 2 the rules of engagement cos when Karen came 2 Abuja, we all went with her to Kiss FM where Vina works and while we there a certain press guy wanted to have some kind of chat with Vina, she very clear to the guy dat he has to go tru her manager. I don’t knw if dats being stuck up but i call it playing to the rules.

  • honey koko September 14, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I think Vina is cool, Karen was fun to watch but def not d kinda of gal i will want to ve as a a frnd. She tried so hard to bring down all d other gals n said hurtful things to people. Karen is real as she is, Vina is also real (she obviously had a better upbringing). Is it now a crime to be well brought up?pls lets stop comparing dem. People r different.

  • ebiekikai September 14, 2011 at 8:31 pm

  • xxxx September 14, 2011 at 10:53 pm

The babe has done nothing for all this negative comments about her…What is the origin of accent when the whole world now seem to persecute her for learning to speak in a better accent than naija accent. Is there any nation in the world that can speak yoruba or ibo or hausa like we nigerians???So if the girl is learning from the owners of the language why the whole hatred.Naijas are just backminded and they seem indulged in negativity.

  • en September 15, 2011 at 4:51 am

Pple wats wit all d -ve comments…I can’t believe a bulk of nigerians would tag karen as a true rep…she was loud, rude, insultive, always in ur face, always drunk…..plsssssssss dt does not represent me one bit… I woould rather be ‘fake’ like vina than be real like karen…abeg she was a pain 2 watch 4 me sha
Big ups vina…..keep ur head up…if u r true to urself then f…k all ds -ve comments…I wasn’t particularly a fan neither was I a karen fan ….karen won cos she was d only housemate dt gave us real drama

  • angiedoll September 15, 2011 at 9:15 am

i luv vina n her accent i wish i had her accent but eh her fashion sense is wacked, her choice of colors dnt coordinate wit her complexion, the mohawk make me want to cry n scream @ d same time, her clothes dnt suit her body shape the rule of fashion is to knw thy self u cant hav short legs n yams n be wearin short tins.BN pls tell me u guys didnt organise this photoshoot 4 her d poor girl is colorless n u go put her 4 rugged place d snap am instead of a very classy place to make her look glamourous n elegant.

  • kech September 15, 2011 at 9:48 am

Pls enuff with d negative comments, its not cool @ all. Dnt hate her cos u aint her, not her fault she had a good up bringing. As for d so called family friend dat wants 2 expose her, ur just a coward! get a life pls……

  • something somewhere September 15, 2011 at 10:02 am

girl i loved u all the way….wow your smile makes me hmmmmmmmmmmm…

  • MissKay September 15, 2011 at 10:33 am

Thank you Bellanaija 4 this post o jarey! & AMEN @ “huh?!” & everyone who commented in reply to him/her! I honestly dont get why the inferiority complex thing eats Nigerians up only to leave them with Negativity. Dont place someone on a pedestal because you’re oozing inferiority and then blame them for being there. Malvina Longpet has a British accent whether you like it or not & the fact that she does, doesnt make her fake. Would you like her to label you as an illiterate because you speak with a strong Nigerian accent? NO, right? so dont label her as fake because she has an accent stemming from where she grew up! Tell me you’re not glad & even fascinated when oyinbo comes to Naija & learns the languages with the accents sef…what makes that different from this case? maybe people’s ignorance!

About the Luclay issue…i’m pretty sure almost every girl has had that one guy she has clung to even when she shouldn’t & maybe never even realized it….is it because yours wasnt aired on TV???? oh please! at least she wasnt sampling all the men in the house

& finally, about her style……uhhmmm, that dress is banging! Rock it, Vina, & rock your hair as well!! people acting as if they havent seen worse in Naija with babes deciding to do blue, purple, yellow, & even orange versions of rihanna’s hair with the weave even half falling off…abeggeee

i have a whole blog post on the accent issue because all my thoughts wont fit on Bellanaija…lol: https://lockstockbarrelbymisskay.wordpress.com/category/thoughts-musings-encounters-inspiration-%E2%99%A5/page/3/

  • toluh September 15, 2011 at 10:44 am

I don’t have a problem wiv her accent, infact I love it. She speaks very good english…….but gal U̶̲̥̅̊ need 2 work on ur wardrobe, btw she’s got d ugliest set of shoes nobody can beat her 2 dat

  • adamma September 15, 2011 at 12:31 pm

as for me just keep being urself vina, everybody must nt like ur way of living ur life, all am concerned with is ur hair style and clothing it brings way down low abeg try change am

  • Kokomma September 15, 2011 at 1:38 pm

Just 1 thing, the shoulder of the dress didn’t have to be so high- we get the *high fashion* bit… not literally!!! that said. U Go Girl!!

  • N-kay September 16, 2011 at 9:56 am

vina gal i like ur sense of decency u r an intelligent gal but ur dress sense is zero pls do sumthing abt it.cos i like you ma jos gal.

  • nkechi September 17, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Vina is certainly not faking her accent. Why is her accent an issue; Haba! but she definitely needs a wardrobe manager; her dress sense is a put-off. She can ask Karen to help her out. I love her hairstyle better than the ”yeye” weave she had on just after the show that added so many years to her age. Vina, you are an attractive Black Beauty. Be very confident!

  • julie September 18, 2011 at 2:00 pm

SOMETIMES I DONT UNDERSTAND WE AFRICANS..JUST IMAGINE 10 VINAS IN BBAS HOUSE ..WILL YOU WATCH?? PLZZZZ!! VINA WAS TOO PERFECT FOR THE SHOW..WITH HER FAKE FRIENDS HANNI AND VIMBAI..THEY ARE GOOD OUTSIDE BUT NOT WHEN AM PAYING 80 USD /MONTHLY FOR MY DSTV..HELL NO!!!

  • 4la September 18, 2011 at 3:43 pm

    God bless Vina

  • itu September 19, 2011 at 11:47 am

I love u vina keep shining

  • bunny September 20, 2011 at 10:52 am

go gal! i loved vina on the show..the only thing i found rather annoying was her constatnt fixation on lomwe who didnt seem to give a hoot about her… and pple stop with calling her fake!
as far as i’m concerned, she was a far better rep than karen who was brash and obnoxious . i mean if u really have a good heart, do u constantly need to remind pple all the time that u do?and with all d sleaziness and begging guys to sleep with her!i think karen played a fast one on us viewers. she entertained but i most def would rather have vina as a friend or a sister!

  • bunny September 20, 2011 at 10:55 am

….and ther’s absolutely nothing wrong with vina’s dress in this picture! puhleezz…judging from the show tho, she does need some help with her wardrobe. i also think d mohawk is a bit too much for her…
hun, if u’reading, i think a softer hairdo will suit u better…u’re an ebony beauty and ur smile *****! keep your head up!!

  • Kathryn Cage September 20, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Vina i’ll talk to you like a sister. U don’t desire a guy who is interested in your friend, you don’t advise her not to date him and turn around to want him for yourself. It’s not done, it’s not right and it goes to show that you are not trustworthy. That is all i hated about you and it’s sickening you’re still crooning over the same guy in this interview. Get help with your wardrobe and carry yourself well, then and only then will you attract guys better than Lomwe

  • Torkwase September 21, 2011 at 1:30 am

abeg jare…. Lomwe Lomwe….. even your last quote had to be from Lomwe! you had a shameless crush on the guy. it hurt to watch you grovel for the guy.

  • Jlo September 21, 2011 at 10:13 am

    She had an accent??Really?

  • na me September 21, 2011 at 10:30 pm
