President Goodluck Jonathan hosts the Super Eagles at a Special Reception | Presents them with National Honours, Plots of Land & Money

At a special reception held in honour of the Super Eagles in Abuja on Tuesday evening, President Goodluck Jonathan splashed millions of naira, plots of land in Abuja and national awards on the players and officials of the team for lifting the Africa Cup of Nations.

He announced a cash reward of N10 million to the Head Coach of the team, Stephen Keshi, and N5 million to other coaches and players. The team’s technical officials are to receive N2 million cash award each. In addition to the cash award, the players and officials are also to get a plot of land each in Abuja.

President Jonathan also conferred National honours on them. Keshi was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger, while his assistants Daniel Amokachi and Ike Shorunmu and team captain, Joseph Yobo, were awarded the Officer of the Federal Republic.

Other players were conferred with the award of the Member of the Order of the Niger.

The players and officials were decorated with the national honours by Jonathan shortly after he announced the incentives.

Also, billionaire business moguls Tony Elumelu and Jim Ovia donated half a million dollars each to the Super Eagles, while Aliko Dangote donated N5 million to each player and technical crew of the Super Eagles.

I’m excited for the heroes welcome the Super Eagles got for winning the African Cup of Nations – I’m excited about the joy it’s brought every Nigerian. I am afraid though, that it is again one of the quick fixes that distract us from the many things that plague us. The boys have been gifted millions of naira by Dangote, by Adenuga; they have received national honors, landed property, and more money from Mr President. That caters to them, with their football ages that would put many a young vixen to shame. What happens to raising the next generation of AFCON, maybe even Olympic gold winners? What happened to celebrating today, but making plans for tomorrow? The celebrations of tonight to my mind are a tad reminiscent of King Herod offering his belly dancing daughter the half of his kingdom but hey, that’s just me.

Whats order of the Niger? I find it interesting that Dangote gave each player 5mil but our president gave only 2mil I know he’s a billionaire and all but still.. anyways congrats to them!

    • Ready February 13, 2013 at 9:36 am

The President gave N5 million to each player, and N2m to technical officials. Comprehensive reading is essential.

  • jmayaki February 13, 2013 at 4:22 am

    awwwwwwwwwwwwwww………….so cute

  • anyway... February 13, 2013 at 4:23 am

Wow, now if only other productive citizens like doctors, nurses, teachers etc had such incentives.

We’ve won AFCON but back to Economic and Social development…

  • enkay February 13, 2013 at 5:00 am

    Land???????????????

  • Sara Adebayo February 13, 2013 at 5:55 am

SURPRISE! they are many good citizens in Nigeria who do not get this type of rewards or incentives. Do we think of the young medical doctors, nurses, teachers who work tirelessly and in remote areas? These are my real heroes… because their achievements are success to every young Nigerian. Anyway Congrats! just let not all these material things go over your head…. And making women running after you! so hold on to your pants. Help your parents especially your mothers, stay with your wife , take care of your children.. For those who are not married yet, don’t start now chasing girls left and right…. Stick with your current girl friend.. and good luck in the future.

    • HABBA February 13, 2013 at 6:28 am

LMAO! ahah is it a must to stay with their current GF? plz let them move to greener pastures if desired.

  • Big Ben February 13, 2013 at 6:34 am

Glad they are getting rewarded, but does anyone else wonder where all these monies are coming from? I mean which budget/fund? and land??? really…can we have some transparency…since when did the presidency become the giver of land, on what legislative merit does that happen…I am genuinely excited for our victory and I truly like that our players are rewarded, but can we have a more open, documented and monitored process, maybe in the form of NFF budget…It is with little things like this that we can start taking stabs at misappropriation and embezzlement of funds.

  • Tim February 13, 2013 at 6:37 am

Two words: MISPLACED PRIORITIES. Americans should have given their gold olympic medalists millions of dollars and plots of land in California! WHF…Nigerian mentality is definitely out of order when there are people in the country who have basic needs to be catered to. This soccer players get paid, cheering them up is good enough this overbearing incentives is DAMN RIDICULOUS!

    • Dr O February 13, 2013 at 8:35 am

      America does compensate :
“The United States Olympic Committee pays its medal winners $25,000 to gold medal winners, $15,000 to those who take home a silver and $10,000 for a bronze.”
      Source: investopedia.com/financial-edge/0812/does-a-gold-medal-guarantee-riches.aspx

Now convert that to Naira, and you realize its all about the same!

US women soccer team even got to split $1.5 million!
      sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/54656094-77/team-soccer-bonus-gulati.html.csp

Other countries do as well, see what they compensate for Gold medals:
“Australia pays $20,900. If you’re a Russian gold medal athlete, you stand to collect $135,000. Italy pays $182,000 to gold medal winners. Singapore, a country that has never won a gold medal, is offering its athletes $800,000. China only pays $51,000.”

      Source: investopedia.com/financial-edge/0812/does-a-gold-medal-guarantee-riches.aspx#ixzz2KlK3X1a0

So please do your own research before speaking. Please dont compare Nigeria to the US, I laugh when people do that, you automatically lose ground in any argument once you go that direction. While I agree that we are short sighted in our mindset. Some of these players are local players, playing for Nigerian teams, no they dont all get paid, let to see the broader picture. See the win or incentives isnt just for them, its because of the unity that the win brings. Unfortunately like “D Fairy Godmother” said, the money should also be pumped into the local leagues, and even to other sports that we can be good at, such as track and field.
These lands and awards are being shared by those in power in abuja anyway, among themselves. So really, I’d much prefer that these people get it, rather than the politicians.

      • Dr O February 13, 2013 at 8:42 am

Oh and America does have people that need basic needs catered to, I see many homeless people daily, some using torn blankets and rat infested mattresses to call home, yes this is the good ol USA. Yet they still compensate their Olympic medalists.
So again your argument is somewhat flawed.

    • Ms lala February 13, 2013 at 9:42 am

preach….i expected the likes of adenuga and corporate bodies to ask them to represent their brand and in return hand them large ward of cash…..thats how the western world does it….u win gold medal or whatever and corporate bodies want u to be their spokes person hence u get handsomely paid and get more famous…but giving lands and throwing them money….about establish a better facility in which these kids can continue to practice in….and since when did the head of state became the giver of lands…this fool called jonathan actually thinks he’s the obi or oba of Nigeria…wonders shall never end. the country simply amazes…a parade a good cheer and its a wrap…let the money giving be left to the rich men who own companies and want to hire them just like glo reps and other brands.

    • ij February 13, 2013 at 10:49 am

Ne’er have truer words been spoken , my thoughts exactly, we appreciate them for doing brilliantly but still .
You just wonder where all these people donating left right and center are when we the masses are inundated (OK may be not inundated ) with appeals for our brothers and sisters who desperately need financial help (a fraction of what has been doled out ) for one life saving surgery or the other abroad .

    • I'm so angry right now February 13, 2013 at 11:08 am

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!! Seriously, I’ve been asking around, is it that there is just one pool of money lying somewhere that they dip into at will? A presidential dinner to reward these players is good enough from the presidency! If any individual or corporate organisation wants to do something extra or give them money they should go ahead and do it! These people were doing their job! No one gives me even extra 200,000 when I do my job well! If I’m exceptional, I may get a handshake from the MD and my name and picture splattered over the intranet but that’s it.

This is a TOTAL WASTE OF FUNDS THAT COULD HAVE GONE INTO SOMETHING THAT WOULD HAVE BENEFITTED A WHOLE COMMUNITY. 2 million naira would go a long way in changing one or two remote VILLAGES. I don’t know how we think in this country, honestly. We just sit down with our warped sentiments and celebrate nonsense!

People in sensible countries where things work would feel extremely honoured to just have dinner and have their picture taken with the president of their country. But not Nigeria. “You took a picture with Jonathan. Ehen? Is that all? What did he give you?” So much materialism!! Rubbish.

      • Omo1 February 13, 2013 at 1:37 pm

Please don’t get this wrong! Have nothing against anyone – professional doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists, etc, etc! But this is not about just individual achievement or success. This is about National pride, unity and bringing the whole National together in a resounding manner! This is about making a whole nation forget about all it’s woes, problems and differences in that moment of victory!! This is about making every Nigerian, anywhere to stand tall and proudly proclaim – that’s my team, that’s my country, that’s my Trophy coming home for keeps!!! This happens only in victory from sports, so celebrate and enjoy the encomiums and the rain and splash of cash and gifts to our heroes for they deserve every ounce of it! Fly Super Eagles, fly, fly, fly………..fly!!! It’s your moment – enjoy it

  • Omo1 February 13, 2013 at 1:40 pm

There are millions of people out there who needs to get some commendation for their hard work and contribution to the course of humanity , day in day out..seriously!!!!

  • nancy February 13, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Na wa for nigerians o, una too dey jealous. If the prize was to be given to any of u blaming the president for his gesture, I doubt none of u wld hv complained. They deserved wat dey got, even if they were given the whole Nigeria. Its not easy to win da trophy after 19yrs. Despite all they went tru 4rm Nigerians. Haba dey deserve it.

  • toby February 13, 2013 at 11:02 pm

Yes,I give Kudos to the super eagles, they did us proud. However I’m not in support of govt just giving them too much, lands, SERIOUSLY? My mum has been a teacher for 32 yrs now and event though we begged her to goto private schools to teach, she refused always saying “I need to take care/teach those kids” and guess what? She’s retiring this year, not because she doesn’t love d job anymore but because d govt has refused to promote her as she refused to bribe anybody/sleep with anybody to get promoted to where she has a right to be. My mum is just one case out of all d other govt workers n pple who r real heroes, whatever happend to rewarding pple like that?32 freaking yrs! Naija needs help I swear.
