The idea we have been sold over the years, where film making is concerned, is that actors use their faces, voices and bodies to convey what their characters are feeling. However, Inside Out takes a more direct approach. This unique and astonishing animated feature from Pixar uses the feelings themselves as comic characters in the tale of Riley, an 11-year-old girl going through the emotional upheaval of moving from the home she grew up in and was familiar with in Minnesota, to a relatively new and unknown territory in San Francisco.

Tripican Inside Out - BellaNaija - July2015

The studio’s best work since Toy Story 3 and Up, Pixar brilliantly personifies the five emotions that live inside Riley’s head, and control her outward expressions; Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) who is the leader of the group, Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). Trouble looms when Joy and opposing emotion Sadness are sucked out from the emotions control HQ and land in Riley’s outer mind space, leaving Riley to suffer the mood swings of an upset young girl thanks to being at the mercy of the Feelings left in charge.

To avoid permanent mood doom, these opposing emotions (Joy and Sadness) have to get back to the control center to restore things back for Riley, and thus begin an odyssey through Riley’s emotional world.

For those familiar with Pixar movies, you can say we have seen it all, in terms of story lines: from toys having feelings (1995) to bugs having feelings (1998), and now it’s the incredible of them yet feelings having feelings, which is basically what Inside Out expresses. In terms of fun, emotion, gags and – yes – cries, Inside Out meets the very best of what the studio has done to date, and it does so within a simple, lovable realization of an incredibly complicated abstract concept.
