“Africa’s global lifestyle magazine”, ARISE has released their 10th Issue just in time for the World Cup which is currently being held in South Africa.
The issue features Sudanese supermodel, Alek Wek on the cover. Wek is garbed in a cut-out black swimsuit and is photographed clutching a ‘Jabulani’ / World Cup ball.
The magazine also features interviews and profiles of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, celebrity Jeweller Chris Aire and Nigerian Super Eagles Captain Nwankwo Kanu.

Looks good but we’ll say it again – we need to see more African designers’ pieces being used in ARISE!

Here are some more photos from the World Cup themed editorial featuring Alek Wek, Oluchi Onweagba, Gracie Cavalho, Georgie Badiel, Aminata Niara and Nana Kieta.

Here are some excepts from the previous issue of ARISE (Issue 9) – Beautiful

As much as I love Arise and support it by buying it from random shops – it would help if they published the magazine more regularly as most of my friends have stopped buying it as it is too sporadic!

Alek Wek is gorgeous but why oh why did they have to lighten her? That is not her
complexion. Her natural tone is beautiful the way it is. I don tire for all these magazine
    photo-shopping/ editing sef. *sigh*

She looks hot, but her arms look longer than her body and she’s on her period.

Okay nobody else is saying it so I will. Some of these models are so painfully thin, you get nervous just looking at them. I know these ones are probably naturally skinny ( I know a lot of African girls like these) but putting only models of this size in every magazine could lead to us having the same problems being experienced in the West ( eating disorders and so on).

I say the magazines should show models of all sizes, within reason, so that they don’t send out the wrong message to young women and girls. The girl in the main fashion spread looks like an Auschwitz survivor for goodness sake!

Dorian true talk… of course they want to be like the West at all costs, so they just copy blindly….
the model in the yellow jersey looks like she’s about to break!
Some of them are naturally skinny, Oluchi for example dats why she looks healthy…

even though am really skinny, i don’t understand why most designers or ‘fashion people’, send out the wrong message and create the impression that if you aren’t skinny you aren’t beautiful!

even here in africa where we have beautiful curvy women, the concentration in the fashion industry is solely on skinny women…

we don’t have to imitate everything…
