The 2011 Exquisite Lady of the Year (ELOY) Awards – Matse Uwatse, Aisha Augie-Kuta, Bola Obileye, Eva Alordiah & Many More Outstanding Women Nominated

It all started in 2009, a long conceived idea came to life, the Exquisite Lady of the Year (ELOY) awards, conceptualized and executed by Exquisite Magazine, led by its publisher Tewa Onasanya.

It got bigger and better in October 2010 at the Landmark Village in Victoria Island where Teju Babyface and Kemi Ajumobi hosted the exquisite guests at the second edition of the Exquisite Lady of the Year awards.

Now, it’s that time of the year when plans are in top gear as we approach the third edition of the Exquisite Lady of the Year (ELOY) awards 2011.

The spotlight is beaming on women. It is evident in Nigeria and around the world, as policy makers and business support organizations are waking up to the idea that women are essential for the economic prosperity of the nation. Financial institutions, the government and others are recognizing the potential of women. The aim of ELOY Awards is recognize and award outstanding women in Nigeria. From their humble beginnings, all the nominees have blossomed to become people other women and men admire and emulate while striving for success.

The ELOY awards focuses on the character of the individual, her ability and achievements and how her work impacts the Nigerian society.

This year’s ELOY is scheduled to take place on Sunday 23rd October 2011 at the Incubator with the Business Seminar themed ‘Tools for Business Survival in Nigeria’. In addition to the seminar and awards event, there will be pre-ELOY dinner on Saturday 22nd October 2011. The after-party for the ELOY awards will take place after the awards ceremony at CHROME.

Hmmmmmm. I guess women these days don’t do anything more inspiring than fashion and entertainment. Take for instance the T.V personality/presenter of the year. All the nominees present fashion/entertainment/lifestyle shows. None of the nominees is cast in the mould of Erin Brokovich (the real one oh!). I remember Newsline when Abike Dabiri was there – (since she & Frank Olize left, the show has become mini Bisi Olatilo Show -Ovation on T.V!); I remember the TSM show with Chris Anyawu (she went on to become a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic!). Now I can’t even think of a ‘serious show'(I use the word ‘serious’ advisedly so all you fashionistas, please simmer down) being presented by a female. the closest we’ve come is Funmi Iyanda and Mo Abudu’s programmes.Very sad.

I think it’s time we women, and that includes you who are reading this comment and hating me already, rise up and show that we are more than designers/models/actresses/fasionistas/bachelorettes/make up artists etc. I admit that it takes guts and hardwork to be all of these. But on the other hand, women are excelling at other things too. Can’t we laud those women too? BellaNaija, this is a direct dig at you too. It’s been a while since we had a post on some enterprising and inspiring young woman. Can we have more of those kind of women? Women who may not necessarily be on the red carpet but who hold their own in their fields and make a success of whatever they have set out to do. Please BellaNaija, let’s inspire more women to excel. Michelle Obama is known for more than her sense of style. Hillary Clinton, Condolezza Rice, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf – all these women can hold their own in a room full of men. BellaNaija please tell us stories of Nigerian Women who can do this too.

I’m sorry this is such a long winded post. I’m just vexed inside of me that more women are not being recognised for the ‘unfashionable’ things that they do. Take for instance this ELOY Awards thingy. There are no nominees for the Female Entrepreneur and Female Role Model of the Year Categories. The winners would be handpicked by Exquisite Magazine and ELOY judges. I can bet my housing allowance that the winner will be one of those beautiful, fashionable and ‘enterprising’ designers, models, actress, radio/TV presenter, fashionista type. At best it will a female politician who can’t even boast of having inspired her own daughter.

Dear Aibee, I understand and appreciate your comment, there are some truths in your comment and i wont want to go into too much detail, but there are women doing great works in their fields, which is not limited to fashion, acting, modelling and other entertaining roles. The female enterpreneur of the year and Role model is being picked by exquisite magazine and the judges, but watch this space for the winners who will definately not be in the ‘group’ you have suggested. The winner of these awards will be women who against all odds have managed to pull their businesses and careers though the nigerian business environment and are women others can emulate, so to speak, I’m not saying these women will win but these are women like Mrs Ibukun Awosika (SCOA, Chair center), Mrs Akinkugbe (Secure ID), Mrs Evelyn Oputu, Mrs Tokunbo Chiedu (Compass consulting), Mrs Shola David Borha, Mrs Ndidi Nwuneli (mind my spelling) and many many more. Like i said watch this space…

Thank you Aby. I feel very relieved to know Nigerian women have grey matter after all. By the way, Mrs Awosika’s company is the SOKOA Chair Center. God bless Nigerian women.

  17. @ Aibee, well spoken, i feel u on that.

I’m beginning to think there is plenty of ‘wayo’ in this thing oh, how come the likes of Tara and Banke werent nominated for the MUA of the year, so far the best in that category is Bunmi of Unveil Africa, she is not my friend but I’m in the industry so i know their expertise.

    September 15, 2011 at 2:38 pm
