Lanre DaSilva Ajayi Unveils her Label’s Capsule Collection for the 2012 Pitti Immagine W Trade Show in Florence, Italy – The Lookbook

Published

 on

Just last month, Nigerian fashion designer Lanre DaSilva Ajayi with self named label, made headlines alongside other African designers by taking part in Vogue Italia and Yoox.com’s “Discovered in Africa by Vogue Italia exclusively on Yoox.com” project which saw her label debut its pieces on leading retail site Yoox.

Taking yet another step in showcasing Nigerian fashion at the international scene, Lanre DaSilva Ajayi is currently in Florence, Italy to unveil her label’s capsule collection at the 2012 Pitti Immagine W Trade Show which kicked off yesterday and will run till Friday 22nd June 2012. This year, Pitti Immagine W included Nigeria as a guest nation in collaboration with Lagos Fashion Week. According to Pitti Immagine W, LDA and other Nigerian fashion designers were included on its list to stimulate exchange and further mutual knowledge and understanding with fashion talents from emerging nations that have come forward in recent seasons with some of the most interesting concepts in fashion research.

The power fashion designer displays some of her most creative work yet for the trade show. The capsule collection consists of her well known Victorian and Edwardian era influenced pieces with a modern twist. Be it a party frock, a floor or knee length gown or a structured corporate outfit, this collection has got it all. Check it out below.

Lovely designs. She does know how to mix prints. As always LDA nailed it. However, they don’t all look great on the mAnnequin. Maybe a model should have worn some of it. The hang of the outfit is making them look imbalance.

Looong time ago, I didn’t get these over-classy “designers”. Like who remembers Ebony Fashion Fair – looked liked fancy curtains to me. Older and wiser now. (Or boring-er maybe)
I like LDA sha and the solid marketing built into the art e.g. how specific the clothes are (extreme “thematic unity”) and how they are close recreations of a specific image and period, I mean, to understand many of them, find some recent mannequin art by Yinka Shonibare. You could write for days about the non-randomness (the left-brain structured-ness) of LDA’s work.
Though I like many of these clothes, I don’t really wear (new) clothes lol. Wish I was a shareholder hehehe.

Not a fan of this collection. The ankara outfits did not do the collection any justice. The patterns on the ankara fabrics are misaligned making the outfits look a bit tacky for a designer of this caliber. It also appears like there was little or no editing. Take for e.g. the 10th outfit from the bottom, the focus of the dress which is the diamond shape is right at the croch (not flattering) and the zipper on the 9th dress from the bottom ends at a very awkward spot. Hopefully changes are made before the show. Finishing is just as important as the designs themselves. In addition that Victorian and/or Edwardian LDS signature is lacking in these pieces. I would have never guessed that this is a LDS collection.

Her designs are always so vintage-y! I love the full length gown, all the fabrics, and the bodycon ankara dresses. What I don’t understand is the suit. Maybe when worn by a model would make more sense.

I’m a new designer and I look up to LDA;but I still wonder how she is able to mix prints.I think mixing d prints givs d simple clothings more expensive looks! I really am learning from this woman, and others too *wink*

They should have used models instead of these mannequins. The concept will be better displayed on humans. The dresses are fine and the skirt suits have the vintage look like something my mom wore way back. All in all, it was okay! Let’s have models rock the look next time please! Thanks!

I so agree with you. She relied heavily on her fabric, not much skills applied except for pattern arrangement in some cases. While a fashion designer should know how to choose good fabrics and arrange patterns to ur advantage, it is more important to be able to create stunning pieces with your design / sewing and structure. Most Nigerian fashion designers just let the fabric do the work and they give u mediocre designs.
While I respect LDA’spoint of view as a fashion designer, a lot of work needs to be done on creating shapes and creating stunning and unique designs. These shapes and silhouettes are all over the streets of Lagos, my neighborhood tailor can make and has been making same type of clothes since they become popular, only difference is fabric.

LDA always has the big, the slim, the older and the younger in mind when it comes to her designs. She strikes me as a good thinker. Your fabrics always stand out. Nice pieces from top to bottom. I pray for God to bless me and make my acct bigger so that i can patronize you. amen. I love you!
