U.S Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton visits Nigeria & Offers Help in Fighting Boko Haram | Stays Briefly due to Security Fears

The United States Secretary of States, Hillary Clinton has promised to assist Nigeria in fighting the radical Islamic sect.

Clinton, who is on an eleven-nations tour of the African continent, was in Nigeria yesterday and met briefly with President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to Zee News, she also said the US is ready to help Nigeria monitor the movement of goods, particularly amunitions and explosive devices trafficked to the Islamic sect through the borders of Nigeria and Cameroon.

An official travelling with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Reuters after the closed door meeting that the United States wants to help Nigeria fight Islamists and sees it as a growing regional menace, but the country cannot rely on military might alone.

“A security strategy is not enough,” the official said. “We know all too well from our own experiences in both Iraq and Afghanistan what can happen if soldiers and police are not operating under appropriate authorities.

“We will encourage them not to use excessive force and to look at this as a law enforcement operation designed to catch perpetrators and bring them to justice. We can help them develop mechanisms for tracking and determining individuals who are likely to be engaged in supporting Boko Haram actively,” he said.

Still on Clinton’s visit, media reports that she had to cancel most of her scheduled meetings due to heightened security challenges in Nigeria. Foreign media reports on Thursday indicated that Clinton would not pass the night in Nigeria because of security fears.

She also shelved the traditional ‘Meet and Greet’ with US Embassy staff.

She arrived at the Presidential Villa at 3.50pm in company with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru; Nigerian Ambassador to US, Ambassador Ade Adefuye, and a battery of security details and foreign journalists.

She left the Presidential Villa at 6.15 pm and headed for the airport and on her way to Accra, Ghana to participate in the state funeral for the late President John Attah Mills.

I really don’t like the way the press is turning America into Nigeria’s sovereign. It’s sad and depressing. Everybody has turned her coming to Nigeria into a much bigger deal than it should be. What is the real value that they are bringing to the table? Don’t we read the news. America’s relevance is reducing all over the worl but we in Africa still see then as demi gods. It’s just sad and embarrassing.

thats cos the entire presidency in Nigeria is not fit and capable to resolve the BH issues themselves. U are more concerned about the way the press makes Nigeria look, and that is actually what is sad and depressing…….people live in fear in Nigeria, I’m in abuja and no one stays out late anymore. would u rather these issues permit and decline help being offered from foreign bodies?

I like the sound of this – God bless America 🙂

She did stop by and perhaps working together will help alleviate Nigeria of that security threat.

Na wa.. it has gotten to this… I don’t blame her. When even cabin crews will fly to Ghana to spend the night instead of sleeping in Abuja… Hope they resolve this boko haram issue oo

  • N August 10, 2012 at 12:30 pm

    do i blame her?
I will do the same too if i had a choice. I won’t pass the night. Nigerians, we are very tricky people

If she can help, that will be greatly appreciated! It seems they currently can’t contain the issue alone! All help appreciated; if it is sincere! God bless

so after all said and done she did not pass the night in Nigeria, the US must be very careful about their relationship with African countries or else they will loose their respect and admiration in Africa..the Obama administration has failed woefully in respect to their foreign policy towards Africa

Do be careful the way you spout words. One cannot expect another country to govern you. It is for a reason, countries sought and won independence; to provide their own governance. It is totally no other government’s (the US or otherwise) fault, if the elected officials are below par.

  • gurly August 10, 2012 at 1:54 pm

I think this info should be a secret really. These guys are going to get even more violent now that they know d US is about to get involved. Pls do everything in secrecy n catch them unawares.

I completely agree. The Nigerian government needs to be a lot more sensitive at spinning these press releases especially considering the sensitivity of the present crisis. Boko Haram is already suspected to be receiving support from the same groups who’re funding similar terrorist activity in other countries and I think Jonathan has enough worries to sort out without throwing support from the U.S into the mix.

Please God let them help. I live in America and it saddens me that our great country is being ruined by these Islamic creatures. As if we do not have enough problems in Nigeria already.I do not blame her for not spending the night too. Those evil Boko Harams are always looking for blood to spill.

ALL our country needs is the right set of individuas to pilot her affairs, then indeed we shall move forward..but until then…,.lord have mercy.

  • Camron August 10, 2012 at 2:57 pm

U guys amaze me. So you expected her to spend the night in Niegria when she is aware of the killings, scamming and stealing that place. I am not sure Americans want to loose such a person so soon. Who knows, maybe explosives had already been planted where people thought she was going to spend the nyte. you see how these boko haram sect has reduced the nation of Nigeria?????? just so bad.

I doubt Jonathan understands one word Hilary Clinton is saying. It’s a shame and embarrasing that Nigeria is not taking serious action to fight Boko Haram and to provide more security for their citizens. The government is all about me, myself and I, as long as Aso Rock is protected we are good. What is really interesting is, the government has an idea and knows some of the faces of Boko Haram, but they refuse to take action, which makes me conclude Boko Haram is connected to the government. America is suffering too, but at least they are doing MUCH MORE better than Nigeria, and they are the reigning the most powerful nation. So, it’s part of Obama’s job to involve in what is also going on internationally especially when terrorism is a big problem around the world. I hope with America’s involvement, Nigerian government will wake up and take effective actions to better Nigeria.

While we thank His Right Honorable President Obama for sending The Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to Nigeria to advice the peoples President, President Dr. Gooduck on how best to tackle the threat of the Northern Oligarchy with their Boko Haram military outfit, all right thinking Nigerians welcome our SS and she should feel free to discuss with the young Atlantean President. President Goodluck Jonathan. Besides she should be able to tap the Goodluck that has touched humanity today by giving Nigeria plenty more dollars for the President to enable Nigerians celebrate the grace that has touched us to melt the illicit plans of the few unpatriotic Northern leaders using Boko Haram to create insecurity and despair on the land. The Clinton family is very unique and blessed for always being available to assist Nigeria and Africa in a peculiar way. We remember our Holy father as the leader of the external MKO team to seek MKO’s release and actualization of June 12 in the hands of Gen. Abacha, former President Bill Clinton did everything possible to stop The Kaduna Mafia from eliminating all Satguru and team and the negative plans to bomb Nigeria bridges at Lokoja and Onitsha, Nitel building in Lagos, Lanlate, etc., to create insecurity, when they realized that our group (MKO Team) won the corruption and transparency test the Military cunningly forced on all the politicians who were invited to attend the National Reconcilitation Meetings that was on at that time. Madam. welcome home, please stay longer to know that we love you and the people of America. Satguru loves you more.

Is very unfortunate and indeed shameful our government can’t cop this boko boys.A huge shame on all ex military generals, they do not view this as a slap on the face, that while they are alive this is happening to a country they once ruled, and this raises an eye brow, could it be that they prefer what is happening?am sobbing for my dear country.Pls God help us.
