“Governor Godswill Akpabio is not a Reckless Spender” His Chief Press Secretary gives 6 Reasons Why

The past few weeks have not been the very best for the Governor of Akwa-Ibom state Godswill Akpabio. There have been several allegations of him misusing the government funds, originating from his donation of a Toyota SUV and plane tickets to Annie Idibia during her traditional wedding. Shortly after that, he offered N1 Million each to six state Chairmen of the Peoples’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the South-South geopolitical zone for lunch during one of their meetings. He was also caught on camera recently, making a self confession on how he rigged the senatorial primary elections in his state.

In a bid to save his reputation, his press secretary, Anietie Ukpe, has released a statement highlighting six reasons why Governor Akpabio is not a reckless money spender.

Please read them and tell us what you think:

1. All the money so far spent was budgeted and did not in any way negatively impact on the fortunes of Akwa Ibom and the people of the state.

2. The governor promised and actually donated only one Toyota Prado SUV to Tuface Idibia and his wife, Annie Macaulay, not two such vehicles, as was wrongly reported. When the most respected Highlife living legend, Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya, was honoured with the latest model of Toyota Avensis saloon car by Governor Fayemi of Ekiti State to mark his 80th birthday, did anybody complain?

3. The Governor promised to give twenty relatives of the bride, Annie Macaulay, who is an Akwa Ibom daughter, return tickets to Dubai to attend the wedding. The entire cost of these return tickets came down to just N3 million. Was that enough for such pent up fury?

4. On the donation of N6 million to the state chapter chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party at Port Harcourt, in the 2013 budget, there is a provision for Hospitality, Grants and Donations by the Governor under Section 467/169. This provision is not peculiar to Akwa Ibom State; it is an intrinsic part of all government budgets in the world. How leaders decide on donations is not subject to legislative scrutiny or control, just as the legislature does not control how the provision for the security vote is spent.

5. Concerning the donation of N230 million (N10 million per state) by twenty-three PDP states for developmental projects in Mr President’s immediate community, the projects involved included cancer diagnostic centre, nursery school, primary school, secondary school, skill acquisition centre, hostel for NYSC youths posted to Bayelsa, and a deanery for prayers. All those who are upset about this donation have the option to channel their own donations towards the building of shrines, or even to Satan.

6. There are also issues with the Governor saying that he “once gave a cash gift of N10m to the national Under-17 football team, the Golden Eaglets, for beating Mali in a first leg African Under-17 Championship qualifier in Calabar last November.” Not true! Governor Akpabio met the kids a few weeks earlier at Abuja Airport and on interaction learnt of their financial handicap in prosecuting major competitions outside Nigeria. He pledged N10 million support to the team and redeemed same at Calabar after the team’s match with Mali.

Signed, Chief Press Secretary/Senior Special Assistant to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Anietie Ukpe.

Akpabio’s aides should shut up and stop commenting this issue so that it will get out of the public domain. The more they talk about it, the more stupid they make the man look. He is a spendthrift and nothing more.

  3. Let them lie and steal and make merry now, their punishment will come eventually.

    March 31, 2013 at 3:27 pm

I know that there are men in Nigeria who are honest and hardworking but there are also evil men, who have chosen to use their seat of power and responsibility as a throne of misappropriation and debauchery. Our leaders have refused to put a reputable judicial system in place so for now, these evil men are not held responsible for their crimes. But know this, Nigeria was created by God, and for those who defile the creation of God…hell fire will not even be enough punishment on the last day. If Akpabio is innocent, then God bless his soul. But if Akpabio is a criminal, he will probably walk free and embezzle all the funds he wants. His judgement will not be in this lifetime, but the next.

Nigeria is FINISHED!!! So because the govt. in Ekiti gave a car then it makes sense for Akwa Ibom to do the same? Sicne when is Ekiti the model of good governance? Ha she heard of Boris Johnson giving cars to celebs? Just N3 million? Can someone remind me what the average annual salary is in Nigeria again?

So government can donate the people’s money to their own political party or its affiliates? Sure, no conflicts of interest there. Don’t get me started on the idea of all the state governments donating to projects in Bayelsa! WTF? Are their own states developed, ni?

Mr Aniete or Annie or what ever your name is, please stop embarrassing yourself here. You and your kind clearly have nothing to offer, are completely out of touch with reality and can only be relevant in a cesspool like Nigeria!

See what we have turned this country into! Rather than give clear reasons for this outrageous act, the Pastor (supposed man of God who should uphold the truth) is comparing one man’s sin with another man’s sin, thereby making it pardonable. Who will call these people to order? We need a revolution in this country!

I think it’s fair to say Nigerians are in serious soup. Corruption has now been fully embraced and those in power (who heavily benefit from corruption) can’t be arsed. WE NEED A REVOLUTION, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!

How can a press secretary worth his/her salt actually write ” The entire cost of these return tickets came down to just N3 million. Was that enough for such pent up fury?”. You don’t question the intelligence of the voting public to their face even if you think they’re stupid.

The fact that the expenditures were within budget does not mean he should treat the funds without respect. It is still sha the public’s money. Saying you will give someone N1million MrBiggs money just sounds flippant, talk less of giving multiple people

KAI! So now things have degenerated to the level where they actually think this makes sense – they have the audacity to come up with this rubbish in a country where people are struggling to eat once a day and it was reported last year that one suicide bomber was willing to go on his mission for a 7000 naira payment to his family. I won’t shout. I’ll leave that to orphans and widows who have suffered at the hands of the Nigerian government because you KNOW they’re cursing someone.

When something crazy happens up North, people scream “SPLIT THE COUNTRY” meanwhile, down South, Governors like Akpabio and ‘kidnapping, bombing, shooting’ through corruption. Goes to show the whole country is messed up either way.

Nigerians should fight for better governance across the board. That’s the only way the country can move forward from violence, terrorism, poverty etc

Pastor Anietie Ukpe, this is the most moronic rebuttal anyone has ever come up with. To think that a sane adult accepts this as reasonable is scary. Corruption has eaten deep into the sensibility of the average Nigerian. Pastor Anietie Ukpe, pls read the aforementioned comments for further thought. You need help.

May The Lord deal with all these people. This goat is justifying what his dumb Oga at the top did. It’s not fair on the poor people who are suffering. They are walking all over people as if they won’t be judged someday. Instead of them to build better schools and provide basic amenities they are throwing money away. They can’t build a well equipped hospital rather when they are sick they fly out of the country. I pray that God will deal with them and this stupid guy justifying what he did is only saying that because he has been paid.

Nigeria is a freaking joke of a country!!! Please this Akpabio’s PR person should SHUT UP and cease and desist from issuing any other statements that will further inflame people. So because Ekiti governor gave out a car, it’s okay for everybody else to do so? You see why we are dealing with a failed nation? Secondly, how did they manage to budget for Annie’s wedding that was just recently announced? Over 3M naira in a gift to a “daughter of Akwaibom” state ehn? And this is supposed to be okay? Nah men, that country is a joke. Tufiakwa. Let Banky and co be writing long speeches and cool stories, this is where the real problems lie o!

I am notbforbor against Akpabio, though I would have been happy, if I am one of the beneficiary, won’t you? Lol. May God give us good benefiaries – Amen! Lol. Well my very very strong point is this: THANKS, AKPABIO IS EVEN GIVING BACK TO THE PEOPLE SOMEWAY – SOMEHOW! My strong headache is this: the nation is blessed, I mean blessed beyond our comprehension – you can’t just imagine it – you can’t imagine billions of Naira that an average big politician/leader keeps abroad – money they will never touch till die – money that should be evenly spent in providing basic amenities for us … Take a look at average Nigeria road, TERRIBLE!
