Dramatic Ball Gowns, Dapper Studs & the Ankara Vibe! Photos from the GWB Ball in Washington DC
On Saturday 27th April 2013 the Sierra Leonean Diaspora in the USA celebrated their country’s 52nd Independence Anniversary. Hosted by The GWB Commission, the classy and patriotic 5th Annual Green. White. & Blue. Ball was held at the Historic Howard Theatre, Washington DC. The ball was not only attended by Sierra Leoneans but by fabulous guests from other African nations and friends from the Caribbean.
The night started with the presentation of awards honouring exceptional Sierra Leoneans making an impact in Diaspora and in Sierra Leone. The awards segment was hosted by Farai Gundan. Awardees included Director General of UNIDO Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella (Lifetime Achievement Award), International Ballerina Michaela DePrince (Arts and Entertainment Award), Ola Dpt (Sports Award), and Liesel Renner (Humanitarian Award).
The theme was Hollywood inspired with cultured elegance. Performances included traditional and cultural music by Janka Nabay and Vicki Forna, while DJ Lebbie and DJ No Name kept the atmosphere going with great sounds throughout the night. Commemorating the event were delectable green, white, and blue cup cakes and cake pops provided by Kulture Kakes.
The successful event was sponsored by Arik Air, Jabs Group, Face 2 Face Africa, and Miss Jessies. Partners included BellaNaija, Restycle, Prince Zamira Photography, Because I Am Fabulous, Runaworks Studios, Applause Africa, Ms. Dunnie O. and African Limelight.
Partial proceeds will go to non-profit organization Throne Room Orphanage Educational Center. www.troec.org.

I must admit I went through the pics before reading the story thinking it was a Nigerian event, naturally. So going through I was wondering how come so many black-skinned beautiful sisters without any bleached ones then I was like maybe they’re Ghanaians… wait a minute lemme check…. Sierra Leoneans! POM!!! Nice dresses btw.

Aren’t u tired of being ignorant? not all ghanaians are dark skinned. same way not all nigerians are fair skinned. in fact if you take out the number of nigerian bleachers, you will realize that majority are dark skinned just like any other west african country. i dont know why a lotta nigerians think its cool to be ignorant.

Lovia, I understand your irritation, but you’ve just about done the same things you’re accusing Anne of by making this statement “i dont know why a lotta nigerians think its cool to be ignorant”
just saying

If anything that was a compliment she was making. What’s wrong with being known for beautiful skin. Or are you offended by being considered dark skinned? Lets love ourselves and our ppl.

well well well, SL’s are giving Naija’s a run for their money – and this is how you do it. So refreshing to see no cellulite riddled thighs, boobs popping out of badly fitting dresses, bleached skin and horrendous make up. Kudos to SL. We appreciate o
