BellaNaija presents “Celebrating You! Class of 2013.” A few weeks ago, we called for submissions of graduating students who had excelled in their course of study. We acknowledge the fact that everyone who has graduated this year is a winner. We, therefore, want to celebrate people who have gone over and above the norm. People who have gotten meritorious distinctions and awards from their institution of study. We hope that you are inspired and we look forward to receiving more entries.
To kick off this series we present Oluwtosin Osoko. Tosin was a student of University of Maryland University College. She got a Master of Business Administration degree and was awarded the President’s scholarship.
Three reasons why Tosin should be celebrated.
1. My last semester pursuing my dual degree program at University of Maryland was not what I had dreamed of – my mum who was my biggest cheerleader and a huge supporter of education was diagnosed with end stage cancer. 2 weeks into my last semester and unsure if I would be able to finish, I returned to Nigeria in September, 2012 to spend time with her. As sick as she was, she insisted I return and finish my class. Faced with the thought of losing my mum, the financial difficulties of paying for her treatment and the everyday stress of working full time and taking classes full time, it was definitely the most challenging time in my life. I did return to the U.S. and I completed the class. My mum eventually passed away on the 3rd of January, 2013 three days after I returned again to Nigeria to spend time with her. I graduated on May 11th 2013, and as I walked across the stage, I chose not to think of the pain of losing her but to savour the memories we shared, knowing she was smiling down and was very proud of me.
2.I graduated with a G.P.A of 3.85.
3. I was awarded the President’s Scholarship from 2011-2012
Fun Fact: This is my second Masters degree. I graduated on May 12 2012 with a Master Of Science in Management Degree
