Is this the Way Forward? Jonathan Declares Amnesty for Boko Haram

Published

Jonathan - May 2014 - BellaNaija.com 01
Boni Haruna, the Minister of Youth Development, made an announcement today Thursday 29th May 2014 that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has declared amnesty for members of Islamist militant sect Boko Haram as part of his administration’s “youths-friendly programmes and policies”.

Punch reports that it was disclosed at an event tagged “A day with young leaders of Nigeria” in Abuja, and the minister asks us to embrace the government’s gesture.
“President Goodluck Jonathan has also declared amnesty for members of the Boko Haram sect.

Series of integration programmes have been lined up for the members of the sect who would surrender their arms and embrace peace.

Let me use this opportunity on behalf of the Federal Government, to call on the members of the Boko Haram sect to embrace the government’s gesture and key to amnesty programme.” he said.

Are we now negotiating with this terrorist group? BellaNaijarians, is this truly the way forward?

The Boko haram sect are still enlarge, they are still actively wreacking havoc on Nigerian innocent children, adults, and defenseless elderly. We are inviting the whole world to help us fight them, and release over 200 abducted children. And what did our President do, give them amnesty. This presidents continues to amaze me with his tactless stupid decisions and gestures, from the change of unilag name to MKO uni (thankfully lagosians fought and regain the name of their esteemed university back); to pardon of a looter, a gov that embezzled millions of Nigeria’s money, Gov Alamieyeseigha (thankfully thoughtful Nigerians took the case back to court) to name just a few, this president continues to horribly amaze people. You pardon people if they are ready to jettison their evil ways, and surrender to you. But who pardons murderers of babies, rapist of children, killers of peace, and destroyers of innocence. I wonder if he would be so quick to pardon if his child are one of the children missing, or if his wife or mother is one of the people bombed.

This has got to be a joke. How do we get justice for all those slain by BH? Mr President, finally, I stop defending you blindly…you need to have your head examined.

Honestly when I first saw this write up on punch, I was amazed. I always had hopes for nigeria until I saw Mr president granting amnesty to the terrorist of the country. Maybe we need to amend the constitution and not give the president the power to grant amnesty, because he as decided to miss use this pardon. Nigeria today sounds like a joke, we ve boko haram killing everywhere, the abducted chibok girls and yet all the president can do is grant amnesty. This man as just showed us how weak he his, very soon another group will surface and start their own and Mr president would grant amnesty. I weep for this country because I can already see it falling apart. Our leaders need wisdom,he is lacking one for now. We need God in Nigeria because human abilities are failing only God can be the leader of this country. This is highly ridiculous I must say

Quite apart from the poor judgement of this move, Boko Haram is not interested in amnesty. They want blood.

Pls ppl must understand a statement before they make a topic …without amnesty you cant identify the group and it comes with conditions and it will solve the problem faster

Really? Meaning the military were lying when they said they knew where the girls are. And I kind of disagree with that comment. You seriously think the ones that will get the amnesty will be the ogas. They don’t even need the money or pardon. This is naive.

    o necessary!
    we must try everything.
If they are Nigerians, they also deserve a place in Nigeria.

The good side is this creates a way out, because only the craziest Boko thinks they can continue like this with the whole world against them. Many will be looking desperately for a way out, and this gives them a way, before they get frustrated and kill themselves and their hostages.

The bad side is there must be punishment for doing evil, otherwise you create a bad precedent / moral hazard: The Niger Delta took up arms, got amnesty; North East went on a rampage, got amnesty; so some others may be inspired to go the same path.

    What do you “guys” think?

This President of ours is so annoying, how can a reasonable humanbeing grant terrorists amnesty,a group of people who have kiilled thousands of people, rendered some homeless, make innocent children opharns.Goodluck Jonathan is not thinking, he is not a man.

@ Rukee, Hmm! Whatever it takes? The truth is that transparency is lacking. Military guys said they knew where the girls were. Lies. What about the US assistance? At this point I’m weak. BH doesn’t need the money or pardon, after all it was never about that. So he gives amnesty and then what? It all ends.
For the leaders – I pray that you will be like the sons of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what to do.

GEJ is in trouble anything he does is now wrong , he says amnesty to those that surrender and put down their arms, you have to do this to break the rank of BH , 70% of those in BH camps were forcefully conscripted, if they are sure that if they come out they would not killed there is possibility of mutiny within some of the camps and an early end to this crises, it would be very expensive to try and kill everyone that is under the occupation of BH as a total war without war prisoners would be unacceptable to today’s world

I’m in deep shock.I can’t believe he said that. Whenever did BH tell him they have ideals they’re fighting for? Nigeria, the land in which the violent prosper and the peaceful get ground into dust. Instead of this man to seize this opportunity to reposition the military, he prefers to waste our resources paying these blood sucking demons. While polytechnics have been on strike for almost one year ? And minimum wage is still 18k or so? Why can’t this man be a man? So when another group comes up we pay them off too? How many are these BH people sef? Hmmmm, God have mercy
