What’s with the subtle shade? Homely ke? that’s a very pretty woman. Wow! Women sef!

So u’re gonna front like u don’t know that Nigerians use the term “homely” differently than the westerners? Well fyi, when a Nigerian says a woman looks homely, it means she looks “wifely”. The girl is obviously pretty, thats a given…and u can obv tell i wasn’t shading cos my whole comment was good-natured. However the hell u or google choose to interpret that is ur own darn business. Going by my entire comment and me mentioning that OC seems levelhead, its obvious that i wasn’t trying to throw shade!

This comment goes to u too “Jo!”…jumping on the bandwagon to form oversabi.

Madam..I don’t get your argument! What wrong with using the world homely. Dont be always too quick to attack. Hian!

      November 7, 2014 at 5:44 pm

Ok Let’s settle for a middle ground here. She is his ‘homey’, then. No?

    • Wendy Wellesley

      November 7, 2014 at 7:03 pm

When you people hear “throw shade” you don’t hear anything else. She is very beautiful, “homely” or not.

    • Jo!

      November 6, 2014 at 9:02 pm

Google homely… it means what you meant, just means something else too…

    • Iris

      November 7, 2014 at 4:58 am

LOL it’s only in Nigerian movies that I’ve heard someone say “homely” and mean it in a positive way. I know there are multiple definitions but in my head “homely” can never be a compliment.

    • Open sesame

      November 7, 2014 at 7:20 am

Homely according to google means unattractive and plain looking. I learnt something new today. I used to think it meant warm…you know homely ~ like that kinna warm, cosy, bear-huggy ‘kinna quality’ 🙂 but that only applies when talking about a place. When it’s a person, it is NOT a compliment.

Is it just me or is this girl different from the one the other blogs showed from last year/earlier this year? Sometimes this ‘media’ people na wa.

She’s beautiful. Congrats OC & Ibukun.

      November 7, 2014 at 9:20 am

I wouldnt want to believe everything i read on google. Why would homely means unattractive! it should be a compliment.

    • zee

      November 6, 2014 at 9:18 pm

Homely??? From looks? Na wa oooh

    • Nahum

      November 6, 2014 at 10:37 pm

Homely ke? I’ve never understood why women are described as homely. Is it a good thing or bad thing?

    • Omo1

      November 7, 2014 at 9:57 am

Well I think it should depend on the usage. Abeg forget Google..I’ve seen pretty attractive wives described as homely in some books and foreign novels..even in real life. I really don’t see it as a bad way to describe a warmly, welcoming woman!

    • Ayò

      November 16, 2014 at 10:14 am

It could mean the two but which ever way you put it tho!!

    • Teris

      November 7, 2014 at 3:14 pm

while i wouldn’t go so far as to accuse @Ona of “throwing shade”, i’m afraid describing her as “homely” is not quite, quite a compliment either. it’s sounds like you’re saying, “oh she looks nice” in the inability to honestly go: “oh my word!!! she so fab!!”

frankly, i think the picture sucks and they’re not experiencing their best “hair-days”.
OC Ukeje, you want to be a star… have your publicity shots on hand and ready the missus for the life ahead. #PriceOfFame.

there’s just something ‘……..(still searching for the appropriate word) hmm ok…..refreshing and innocent about a pretty lady wearing her own hair, minimal makeup, no over arched eyebrows, all covered up…..i mean we hardly see such pics especially on social media. I just love her looks.

  24. [email protected]

    November 7, 2014 at 12:38 pm

While she isnt bad looking, i think everyone is overly generous with the “she’s so pretty” comment. She looks ok, with a nice smile, but …..

    November 7, 2014 at 12:49 pm

I understood Ona’s homely to mean = “Take home to mama” i.e. a wife material, which is a compliment. Never knew google had another meaning for the word homely. Oh well, we learn every day.

      November 7, 2014 at 2:58 pm

How does this average man’s choice for a wife set a standard for how women should dress? I come from a culture of veils and “modesty”. My baby after so many years prefers me in everything thigh bearing. I try to dress like that within our gates to please him. People like what they like. Not every event is a female bashing event abeg.

    • Idomagirl

      November 7, 2014 at 6:34 pm

I just tire with the constant rules for female behaviour.

  32. Ray

    November 7, 2014 at 4:37 pm

In my opinion..she looks too much of a woman for him..maybe its just the picture though. Well Nigerians should stop exaggerating. Is it because its OC’s wife? She is okay and just looks good. I’m a realist without all the sugar coating.

I’m a guy besides, before some of you come tagging hater. Whatever a man finds and holds dear to his heart, he keeps.

Chai Naija peeps ehn! We are our own worst enemy… We know how to talk smack but the moment a microscope is positioned towards your life, humility somehow finds its way to your domain. Most of the standards we hold ourselves up to these days and deem acceptable buckle in the face of real life situations. These 2 go way back and glad OC had the discernment to not be carried away on his journey to fame (at least so far). The wedding was beautiful and I wish them the very best in the journey ahead.
