The campaign billboards of the President Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, which were located on multiple roads in Accra, Ghana, have been pulled down due to citizens’ concerns that the billboards could have security implications for the country.

Following the concerns expressed, Ghana’s national security agency ordered that the billboards be removed, Punch reports.

Speaking on the matter, Kwesi Annin, a security expert at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, reportedly inferred that by pulling down the billboards, Ghana had been saved from a possible attack by terrorist group, Boko Haram.

He also stated that removing the billboards was not only to guard against terrorist attacks, but to also ensure that the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria remained peaceful, as if the country was perceived as favouring one candidate over the other, it could cause a strained relationship between the two countries.

Also, he said the decision was also taken based on the consideration whether or not laws governing the country permit foreign political entities to campaign in Ghana.
