Pres. Jonathan Visits Baga People in Maiduguri IDP Camp | Promises to Rebuild Homes

Goodluck Jonathan DeclarationPresident Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday assured internally displaced persons (IDPs) that the situation they found themselves due to insurgency would be short-lived as government was willing to dislodge the Boko Haram insurgency in the country.

The President gave the indication when he visited the people of Baga, Borno State at the internally displaced camp in Maiduguri.

The Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, told State House correspondents on Jonathan’s return from a visit to the military base, the military hospital and the IDP camp that the president promised to change the status of the victims by helping to rebuild their homes.

“What he (the President) told them was that being an internally displaced person is not a natural state; it is not the kind of state in which any person will like to be permanently.

“These are human beings, women, men, children who have been used to their own natural habitats who have been displaced on account of a particular situation.

“He assured them that they should not panic as government would not only make sure that they would not only be provided for but that being an internally displaced person does not become for them a permanent status.

“Rather it will be a short term and that government would do everything possible to relocate them to make sure they return safely to their communities and help them also to rebuild their communities,’’ he said.

Abati said that the President met with no fewer than 900 IDPs from Baga who welcomed the federal delegation with enthusiasm.

According to him, the visit is not political but part of the morale booster for the armed forces and Nigerians who marked the remembrance of the fallen armed forces members in the day.

Abati also acknowledged the support of the international community in the fight against insurgency in the country and expressed the hope that the crisis would soon end.

Editor’s Note: The headline previously stated “Pres. Jonathan Visits Baga | Promises to Rebuild Homes.” However, we have updated the headline to reflect that the president visited Internally Displaced Persons from Baga, who are currently in Maiduguri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 1976 to gather and distribute news on Nigeria and cover events of interest to Nigeria at the international level for the benefit of the Nigerian Media and the Public.

And you are supposed to represent the Federal Government.
No wonder people continue to doubt that the photos were real.

Pls, why the misinformation? He did not visit Baga as per the headline, but IDPs in Maiduguri. Good thing he has made a move now, however the promise of ‘short-lived’? I can only pray it is just that.

Bella Naija he went to camps in Maidugri not Baga!!!! Please rephrase your headline….He’s using politics to play with people’s lives…He did nothing when they started attacking villages one by one, he did nothing when they kidnapped hundreds of girls, not they have displaced and killed hundreds of thousands of Nigeria with less than a month to the elections, he wants to form Voltron!….Mssccchhheeewww…..Nigerians go and get your PVC and vote incompetence OUT!!!!

The voltron reference tells me you are quite likely an NTA @ channel 5 pikin, and probably somewhere between your late 20’s to early 30’s. Haha…gradually the pieces are falling together and the mystery behind “Ada Nnewi” is unravelling.
LOL…I don’t know how long I can keep this up before it becomes too creepy.

Let’s hope enough people will see beyond petty sentiments, distractions and false propaganda to recognize the incompetence that Nigeria is suffering through right now. GMB may not be an ideal candidate, but he’s the best chance we have for positive change right now and quite frankly, I think he’ll have to work fairly hard to be as ineffective as GEJ has been,

Abeg abeg any one that votes this man into power again is as clueless as they come. Is it not this same Maiduguri that was unsafe for him and his crew after the Chibok girls were kidnapped? Now that election is near, he suddenly pulls a stunt like this? Jonathan we dont want you! go! Note: who ever is voted into power hopefully, not Jonathan and acts like he has done in the past 4 yrs will be voted out infact impeached!!! We will not accept excuses any more from any one… mtcheeew

Politics is evil. So GEJ has not even visited Baga and is talking about willing. These people have no conscience, so now he is doing the people death and their relatives a favour. Empty talk Empty talk all to gain votes and because the international community is now shouting again. The satellite images, the outcry of the UN, the meetings btw the US and UK on the HORRIBLE SITUATION.

Shame Shame Shame. I need a better platform to express the huge disappointment with the level of neglect for human lives.

Well, according to the presidential spokesman Reuben Abati, that the GBJ visited Baga and promised the displaced persons for new habitation. I for one, do not see anything wrong for the visit but rather, we should alloof insurgence which is a global war against the world peace, is not only attacking Nigeria but globally. we should pray for God’s intervention.

Rebuilding their homes doesn’t even make sense when BH will blow it away again. JONA! JONA! JONA! How many times did I call you???!!! The wrath of God will come upon you and every greedy government official who has put ‘self’ above the greater good of my beloved country. Your memory can never be blessed! Rubbish!

Well, according to the presidential spokesman Reuben Abati, that the GBJ visited Baga and promised the displaced persons for new habitation. I for one, do not see anything wrong for the visit but rather, we should allow for the second chance bcos of the good vision he has for our country. Thus, we should equally know that evil insurgence which is global war against the world peace is not only attacking Nigeria but globally. we should pray for God’s intervention.

What has the president’s visit got to do with the displaced citizens?. We’re talking of security improvement here which Jonathan’s administration is all about. He has performed excellently given the prevailing circumstances and resources available
