Etcetera Tells GEJ: Millions are Hungry. Why Are You Dining with Celebs?

etcetera-ejikemeOutspoken singer-turned-writer Etcetera is not happy with President Goodluck Jonathan because according to him, there are millions of hungry people in Nigeria and so Jonathan shouldn’t be dining with celebrities.

According to Punch, he expressed his displeasure via the following article:

Once again, Nollywood and President Jonathan are disconnected from the priorities of Nigerians. Millions are hungry and the country is headed off a cliff and what we get is the President having weekly dinner with celebs at Eko Hotel.

Mr. President should know that all entertainers in the country won’t amount to a spoon of water in the bucket of our population. I agree that our entertainers judging by recent behaviour are now seen as hungry men and women with insatiable appetite, but Mr. President, the larger part of the society are equally hungry and should be fed as well. Why feed just the entertainers? Isn’t that discrimination? What will the entertainers say to Jonathan except the usual lies and half truths? Can a man with a mouthful of undeserved food speak or say the truth? An assessment of the lifestyle of these entertainers gives a false picture of the situation of things as it affects the society at large.

I got your invite for the first dinner which held at Eko Hotel and I boycotted it because I felt that any event by the government at this point in time should be about reassuring the people that the government feels their pains deeply with promises of working tirelessly to bring an end to the underlying causes of such situations in this country, not getting together to eat small chops and samosa while most Nigerians are languishing.

It was very embarrassing waking up the next morning to see our shameless celebrities posing with their invites on social media which invariably means they are telling their fans and the masses who brought them to fame that they are enjoying the good life and everyone else can go to hell.

One entertainer jokingly asked why the President is having these dinners with (the same set of) celebs all the time. I wanted to attribute it to youth empowerment but on a second thought, If Mr. President has a genuine interest in youth empowerment, hosting a few entertainers doesn’t cut across as empowering the youth. I think Mr. President has been wrongly advised that entertainers can be used to influence the Nigerian youths and electorate.

These entertainers can’t influence votes within their families. Another thing is, if Mr. President must have an interactive session with entertainers, he should consider a larger representation of entertainers from all parts of the country, not just those who ply their trade in the south. It will seem to most people that Mr. President is only interested in entertainers from the south. It is called the Nigerian entertainment industry not the South South and South East entertainment industry.

Has Mr. President taken over responsibilities of the Lagos State governor because he currently seems to enjoy greater visibility in the state than the governor and these visits come with a heavy cost to the state in terms of lost man hours caused by traffic along the routes to the event venue.

Streets are usually cordoned off by security personnel and a strange difficulty to use mobile phones in such areas, possibly because of the deployment of radio signal jamming devices by the operatives on guard in those areas. Residents of Lagos shouldn’t go through this because their President is in town. I’ll love to tell Mr. President that service, not celebrities, delivers votes.

Not only is he dining with celebs, the Chibok girls are still not found and mothers and families of these girls are still longing for their loved ones. And GEJ is out partying and giving out his own girls out in marriage, dining and wining with one celeb or another. His excuse is that the Chibok girls’ kidnapping is done by his enemies who paid Boko Haram; and so? Even if the girls were abducted by his political enemies and Boko Haram,he should go out there and show some strength and strong initiative to bring them back, not sweep the matter under the carpet hoping that it will someday go away and the girls will be forgotten. GEJ stand up and rid Nigeria of Boko Haram, period. Nigeria does not want another four years of PASSIVITY!

Well written, no insults, and I agree to the letter. Some celebrities can influence votes though, but not the the ones I have been seeing in the pictures with Jonathan. Just saying.

“and so on and so forth”, let me say emphasize that you are entitled to your opinion. However, in meeting with celebrities, he is not trying to reach the masses directly. He is trying to leverage the reach of the celebrities to reach average people. That is a PR tactic that you may not like but it is a method. That is why Hollywood actors endorse products. You are not trying to sell to the actors. You are trying to reach people who are influenced by the actors. Now, returning to the issues elections are supposed to be made of, what exactly are the issues you believe he needs to address?

Please tell this clueless President GEJ. His actions lately seems so contrived. Why can’t the president have town hall meetings with university students across the country? What is he afraid of? Probably that would expose the dilapidated schools that he claims to have funded. Just like he told Christiana Amanpour of CNN almost 2 years ago that Nigerians are enjoying 24 hours electricity and that they are happy. What a shameful lie that was, coming from the president of a whole Nigeria!

GEJ, better make your second term have an impact on peoples lives. When I say “impact”, I mean “positive” one, because the “Misery index” in the country is too HIGH! We Nigerians are NOT asking for too much, just the basics, bcos we are naturally hardworking and entrepreneural.

Ecetera, thanks for the write-up! If only he would even listen and comprehend. Although I suspect his “praise singers” would NOT let write-ups like this to reach him.

I don talk my own O!

      March 22, 2015 at 4:42 pm

Actually he did say he received an invite but turned it down. This could be true or not. Either way turning up to these invites doesn’t mean you are in full support of the person, as you can go and see what they have to say, ask direct questions if possible and just see how the team operates, that alone can tell you alot about the person throwing the party. But I must say you attacking ETC says more about you than it does about him. Clearly you are possibly one of the very people who doesn’t care about the presidential issues and would take any chance to profit from such event. Unfortunately people like you and the very celebs he talks of are the people that in a way hold Nigeria back. And I accuse the celebs because not many have said anything about the coming elections but they collect anything they can from it. Where is the influence in that?

    • dora

      March 22, 2015 at 5:17 pm

Read the article well, etcetera said he got the invite but he boycotted it. From his statement even if he was invited 100 times he would not honor the invitation. He is not jealous of anything and that he has not release any song does not mean he is wasting away, he might have been busy doing things that are more important to him than releasing music.

Whoa!!! I have been reading your articles online recently ,but this is the best of all you av written. The decision of Mr President dining with entertainers is long overdue ideal from his team, having another youth empowerment such as You WIN could av been a great ideal for the success of his re-election process. Most and few these entertainers will not vote for him or even converse their families or fans to vote for him. Good luck to Mr President, kudos to you Etcetera.

The hunger in Nigeria didn’t start in GEJ time, and the president have been doing alot some f you against him have refused to see, this is an economy that is creating 1.4 million jobs annually…there has been a job creation deficit for over 30 years, we have 1.8 million people joining the labour market annually …so there is still a deficit of 400,000 jobs….

The privatisation of the power sector can boost the economy to create over 4 million jobs in the next 10 years…but we refuse to believe things are working

In the last 4 years , the foreign direct investment Nigeria has experienced cannot be compared to any government in Nigeria since independence…

The automobile assembling companies alone will create 160,000 jobs this year alone

There is sure-p, youwin, almajiri schools, new airports, 25,000km of federal road have been done in 4 years, etc

The truth is that the Yoruba elite are only supporting Buhari APC because he picked a Yoruba man as Vice, would they have supported if he had picked Amaechi or Okorocha…the ibos and south south must unite, this is not the first time Yoruba are betraying us in the south, I discussed for 2 hours with my father today, and he really broke the whole thing to me….it’s only in the south we say let’s be objective …..
Have you guys ever seen El Rufai insulting late president yar adua, despite he ran to exile because of him…GEJ is not the best, but they are only doing this to him because his from the minority…we south south should mark this down, we will regret this….President shehu shagar was a criminal, but the north still gave him second term….
if we want to be fair to all regions in Nigeria , Yoruba did presidency for 8 years, …the highest ibo has done in 16 years is senate president ….southerners open your eyes,….it’s shameful that any ibo man will vote apc, a party that doesn’t even recognise you people, the senate presidency have been zoned to Bukola saraki….and you people are here talking about Apc
so there is no ibo man that could have been Vice PresidentiCal candidate to Buhari right?…what happened to Olisa Agbakoba ,madam oby ezekwesi, pat utomi etc…lets wake up
If we want to talk about been objective, are they couldn’t have gotten a good vice presidential candidate in the entire Ibo ( south east region) or south south
This is an insult to these 2 region,
if you see the federal civil , why we southerners are entering from level 7 and level 8, the northerner come as consultants for 2 years, after 3 years, they are made assistant director, why we southerners are still struggling to grow gradually, that is why you will see a northerner 45 years old is already a director or permanent secretary, a southerner will be 50 at assistant director, by the time hE or she is 55, he will now become a director @ 55″ they will retire him
Look at the judiciary for example, the next 3 Chief Justice of the federation are from the north, why do you think it’s so…please check the last 4 chief justice of the federation…imagine this is civil service,….what happened to the office of character commission that is suppose to balance the whole thing, I work in Abuja …I know what is happening, you people are sitting on Facebook , and saying rubbish….i pity you….
I don’t know if its the education we think we have that is making us in the south been stupid, is sanusi not educated, is el Rufai not educated, is bukola saraki not educated, why can’t they all be objective enough to say, let’s allow the presidential raise be open to every candidate or every region, why are they fighting for their region….
You people should continue doing objectivity there, we will shut down the entire economy of nigeria on the 29th of March if goodluck loses…we are not fools…watch and see …that is why dollars is going up, because every one is stocking dollars so as to run away when the war start
Because of boko haram, president goodluck made a northerner national security adviser(NSA) , he gave a northerner minister of defence , he gave a northerner inspector general of police, please what do you expect him to do, put ak47 on his shoulder and go to borno state himself abi
whenever a people or any ethnic group thinks they are respected in a union, they naturally want to pull out , same thing happened in united kingdom, when english people refused to vote for Gordon Brown, the Scottish asked for a referandum to go their separate ways…we are moving in the wrong side of history

Excuse me, is this about tribe, or about someone who can deliver? Who can move Nigeria forward? I am Igbo, but if it is an Hausa man that will rule this nation and make my life better, let him rule till thy kingdom come. It is this tribalism that has kept Nigeria from moving forward. People would rather vote for someone from their tribe rather than a competent person. You’re canvassing for him because he’s from your tribe. Does he know you? Will he remember you when he gets into office? Lord, when oh when will people become wise?

He has done nothing wrong by dinning with entertainers after all he is the president, he chooses who to dine and wine with. No body is perfect, leadership is not an easy task. I pray that God will give him wisdom to govern nigerians well
