Swiss Government to Help Nigeria Reclaim Abacha’s $370 Million Loot Discovered in Luxembourg

Sani Abacha - March 2014 - BellaNaija

Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Hans Rodulf Hodel, has revealed that a new loot of $370 million has been traced to former Military Head of State, Sani Abacha. The funds were discovered in Luxembourg, and Hodel has promised that the Swiss government will help Nigeria recover it.

Hodel revealed the news on Monday during a congratulatory visit to Nigeria’s president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, Vanguard reports.

He also emphasized that new Swiss laws would help Nigeria and other countries fight corruption.

“This is a long standing issue. Our laws are there to help all countries which are fighting corruption. We will help this government. If you remember, many years ago we gave back the Abacha money to Nigeria. The situation in Switzerland has changed. The policy is no longer the same. In the past, people came to deposit money in Switzerland without too much controversy.

Now, it is not possible to deposit money in Switzerland because of legal origin. Before the bank has to prove that the money is illegal. But now, before you deposit money in Swiss bank, you have to prove that you have earned that money legally.

If you are a wealthy businessman, you have money in billions legally, but if, for example as a Journalist, you come to Switzerland with two million dollars and say you earned it because you did a very good job, nobody will believe you.

There was another request by Nigeria to the Swiss authority to look for Abacha money and some amount, 370 million dollars, has been found in an account, but in Luxembourg. That is now between the Abacha family and the government. They have tried to find a deal so that this money can also come back,” he said.

Hodel also stated that the money would only be released when the Nigerian government makes an official request for assistance.

“The Swiss government is not involved. The Nigerian government has asked for legal assistance. When the government makes a request to my government, we work together on it. But this case is different. That is the Abacha family directly with the Nigerian government finding a deal.

So, the Swiss government is not involved and the money is in Luxembourg. They have asked for legal assistance and we have provided the with this information. If is not a classical case and we would have preferred a classical case where we can give the money back and make sure that if is used in the interest of the people. Now it is up to the Nigerian government,” he said.

I cry for my country! Will corruption ever end in my lifetime? I’m a 24 year old and I seriously wonder if nigeria will change by the time I die.

See, if they recover the $370million, do you guys think they will not squander it again?

Hmmm, imagine even if they put that money into education, they say education is free at primary age, but they still want parents to buy texts books etc. At primary and secondary age text books and other school supplies should be provided for! The only thing a parent should buy is uniform! Or if it isn’t text books, they’ll ask parents to pay for exams…what is that?

Buhari INVEST this money properly into your youth! They are the future, they are the ones who will build a better Naija tomorrow.

I am sure the devil himself is scared of this man. May he burn in eternal fire. May the agony he imposed on Nigeria multiplied with the yearly population of Nigeria be impose him and anyone who benefited from his looting also. Now his son will say his father is good, i hope the national he was given will be rescinded. Bastard.

I have a feeling you’re going to be a very vocal critic against Buhari’s regime. I saw some of your comments about his reported ban on AIT and some other posts. I think criticism is needed for the government to sit up and do its job but I hope you’ll be objective though. Because this your constant criticism of only Buhari……………
And comparing notes on “folishness”, bruh…………………………….

Trust me it will be objective. But when a person calls GEJ foolish for giving Abacha an award and ignores Buhari who said Abacha did not steal…I find that not objective.

    • Sigh!

      April 29, 2015 at 5:17 pm

Have you considered that was based on his knowledge at that time? 2008 was 7 years ago, none of us knew about this money, at least at that time.

@Sigh, Oh Please are you 12? Who did not know that Abacha stole in billions not millions; if we tally the amounts recovered here and there over time, you will shudder. When adults are discussing…….

everyday, more of abaci’s loots keep getting discovered. only God knows just how much he stole. the true traitors of this country are the people who rules us many years ago, not the jonathan’s or obasanjo’s,etc. they practically used development money for this personal bank accounts.

So this man is indirectly calling journalists ‘poor’. Such noble profession! Chai! Diaris God o. What difference does it make recovering the loot? After all it will still find its way back into another person’s (persons’) bank account. Biko hapunu m aka.

His thievery is racking up to billions of dollars. But what do these people hope to do with such amounts of money in their lifetime?

There’s a study in insanity somewhere here.

    Let me help BN readers decode what the Swiss government just did;
The Swiss government is saying, we did not trust the GEJ administration enough to repatriate the funds looted by Abacha back to Nigeria because it would be looted all over again under his watch!
Now that Nigeria he has elected a leader with some level of integrity, we the Swiss government now feel comfortable returning the stolen funds back to Nigeria & entrusting it to a GMB led administration because it’ll be duly accounted for.

Good thought. However, Buhari is an Abacha person. Roger that! I am not saying he will give everything back to Mrs Abacha but what if she negotiates with him to get some back?

      April 29, 2015 at 5:54 pm

This right here is a REAL not imagined fear. I hope to God that Buhari will indeed live up to his reputation of uprightness.

Please read again. They stated that the fight is between the Abacha family and the Nigerian Govt and that any agreement that will be reached is between these two entities, nothing to do with the Swiss Govt.

So Buhari will have to negotiate with the Abacha family before anything can be done about the money.

FYI, GEJ had already negotiated a deal with the Abacha family and the money was released to GEJ’s Administration. Keep your hatred of GEJ in check.

I’m assuming that amount has been accumulating interest and not just sitting. Do I even want to know how much it was worth in the time he stole it?

    April 29, 2015 at 1:25 pm

Yet Mr. Integrity, Buhari, who served with him, has never condemned Abacha, in private or public.
I don’t support any of our leaders but the reason I find myself defending GEJ, whom I don’t even know, is because I love fairness.
If we must castigate, then it has to be everyone. Let’s not do it selectively.

My point, let’s stop pretending that GEJ invented corruption in Nigeria.
The most annoying part, is when the corrupt persons, who helped to ruin this country, knowingly or otherwise want to use GEJ, to rewrites their autobiography.
    We can’t be fooled.
    History cannot be distorted.

While GEJ didn’t invent corruption, he openly defended his corrupt officials…

      April 29, 2015 at 5:57 pm

Just like the others before him..nothing new. What Nnenne is saying is that, “we” the enlightened and bold new generation should castigate equally, do not pick one person and pour out all your Nigeria frustrations on him.
I truly wished the KOWA lady had won; that to me would have sent the real message of CHANGE. But then maybe it wasn’t God’s will…..
