The Natural Hair Pop Quiz (Part 8): Is Natural Hair for Everyone? Yes It Is – Here’s Why!
A few months back, we started a quiz series on the world of natural hair, where we look at popular myths and misconceptions about it in greater detail.
To get caught up, please check out quiz #1 , quiz #2, quiz #3, quiz #4, quiz #5, quiz #6, quiz #7, but make sure to come back so we can debunk another natural hair myth.
This week, we’ll be looking at Question #8, which is;
Question: Is Natural Hair for Everyone?
My Answer: Yes, it is!
This is a very easy question and so today’s post will be succinct.
Please note that the natural hair I am referring to is the kinky afro-textured hair, which naturally grows out of your scalp without any chemical alteration to its colour, texture or feel.
I often hear a lot of women say, “Natural hair is not for everyone, so to each her own.” While there’s nothing wrong with this statement, I can’t help but ask – If natural hair isn’t for everyone, then who is it for? And to those who natural hair isn’t for, what type of hair texture is for them?
There are two schools of thought when it comes to this question.
The first school of thought says that natural hair doesn’t look good on everyone. They’ve even tried it themselves and they don’t like the results they get.
While the second school of thought says that Natural hair is too much work, expensive and painful, and therefore is not for them.
Here’s what I think about these schools of thought:
– To the 1st school of thought – You were born with natural hair
You were born with your natural hair, just like other parts of your body; so it definitely looks good on you. Secondly, an exciting aspect of hair is that you can style it in a way that will suit you. It is not rigid like other parts of your body that may require surgical operation to be tweaked.
– To the 2nd school of thought – Natural hair is not too much work
Please Click this link to read about how this is completely FALSE.
Find out 4 reasons why I think natural hair is for every black woman, especially you!
1. It’s the hair you were born with, so it’s definitely for you.
Saying natural hair is not for you is just like saying skin is not for you. You were born with it and so it belongs to, has been made for and will suit you. All you have to do is try it out.
The major reason why some people are not pleased with their natural hair, is because it did not grow out like Solange or Teyonnah Paris’ hair. We all have our unique hair types, so you have to figure out how to love your signature hair type.
2. It’s the only hair texture that can be braided/twisted into any hairstyle
Natural hair has amazing elasticity. It can be stretched out, shrunk, curled, straightened, rolled, weaved, twisted and much more. You can’t achieve that with relaxed hair which has lost its elasticity due to the relaxing treatment.
3. It’s the healthiest and most economical hairstyle out there
The natural hair life is a healthy way of life. It uses products that are not harsh on your hair, will motivate hair growth, shine and volume. Because of the many ways you can wear natural hair, it saves money that would’ve been used to buy weaves & wigs, and a trip to the salon.
4. It compliments your dark skin tone & beauty
A search through #NaturalHair on Instagram would explain this point better. Natural hair looks so good on Black skin, and the fact that it is signature to you will give you a unique look.
It also adds to the overall beauty you have as a black woman. Back beauty is so inspiring and your unique natural hair makes this shine for all to see.

At the end of the day, going natural is a personal decision. You could decide to grow out your natural tresses, or have your hair relaxed. As long as you have appreciation for yourself and the next man, make your decision work for you.
Tell me – if you are natural, share reasons why natural hair is for you. And if you are not natural, share reasons why you are not getting your hair relaxed.
