Esco: Let’s Talk About Our Favourite TV Shows
Has anyone seen any of the episodes of Season 2 of the TV series “Empire”
Did you see number of cameos by different celebs? There were more appearances from celebrities in the first two episodes than in a baby shower hosted by a Nigerian media personality.
I watched episode 3 last week, and I have found it underwhelming to be honest. For one, Chris Rock is unbelievable playing a gang tough. Imagine Mr. Ibu playing a campus confraternity Don in a Nollywood movie. Gerrarahia!
The reception to Season 2 of Empire has been lukewarm. There is always a risk of making your audience lose connection with the popular characters if the characters evolve too much or play up to certain flaws. Many viewers of the first season of Empire, especially, dug Cookie’s ghetto fabulous sass, and Luscious Lyon’s belligerent, rebel with a cause, nature.
However, Cookie (played by Taraji P. Henson) seems to be overdoing it this season and her shenanigans are beginning to look forced. Luscious (Terrence Howard) now appears to be this omnipotent larger than life mobster who is able to discern the most intricate plots against him, and outmanoeuvre his detractors – every damn time like a Nigerian cabal leader. It is like those Nollywood movies where the bad influences always sported dark shades and smoked cigarettes, as if these were the sole preserve of the dregs of society. Where are the vulnerabilities that made these two characters much loved by the viewing audience in the first season?
Now, I am a sucker for a good TV series. The pick-watch-drop-pick nature of serialized television is making them more popular than movies. There is only so much you can cram into a 2-3 hour motion picture. A producer and scriptwriter has a huge palette to craft a masterpiece on in a series. Many big name movie stars have made the leap to television as TV budgets explode in size. This was not the case a decade ago, when TV was seen as the last desperate act by a falling movie star.
Reality TV may have picked up that mantle though. Certain television shows are a bit watered down to cater to the prawn sandwich, couch potato audience. Some reality shows have included mindless violence, bubblegum plots or extreme sex to create shock value. No show these days is complete without a gay minority character and angry black women fighting and stripping their clothes off. Reality TV is usually scripted, just like WWE wrestling
What are the traditional elements of a good TV hit? It is usually a combination of a few of the below:
- Charismatic and attractive main characters and villains (See Pornstache in Orange Is the New Black; Kingpin in Daredevil)
- A college or high school setting (Off point, but Grease which is for me, the greatest movie of all time was set in a high-school)
- Music and performances – See Empire, Glee
- An intriguing plot
- Sex, Murder and Violence which is tastefully done and does not subjugate the story. Spartacus took gory bloodletting to new heights though.
Many hit TV series risk losing their edge in the third season. Like blue films, in order to increase or maintain viewership figures, the producers are pressured to add more absurd storylines to create shock value and keep the viewer’s keen. Or as success sets in, and the producers add in elements that take away what made the show good in the first place. Like celeb appearances. Soon every character has slept with the other one. Sometimes I pine for the simpler days of Zebrudaya and Ovularia’s “New Masquarade”.
Desperate Housewives was another show that fell off after the initial success. My sister Kpomkwem put me on to “Gossip Girl” when it first came out in 2007. I lose cool-points for admitting it, but I loved that show. There was something about a squad of preppy teens living it up in the Upper East Side of Manhattan that was endearing if not relatable. However from season 3, when Serena, Chuck Bass and co went to college, their snotty juvenile leanings started to look a bit out of place in a tertiary setting. I didn’t bother with season 4 and onwards.
Oh, and Game Of Thrones for me is meh. I do not get the blend of hack-and-slash whataboutery with an infusion of sick fantasy, dragon eggs and mysticism. I watched about 8 episodes of season one and then I was done.
For me, knowledge and value addition are key to good television. When I watch a program, I have to feel not just the comic value but also some kind of edutainment.
I prefer TV content with a bit of historical context even if mixed with a tint of fiction or stretched autobiography (The Tudors), or a Machiavellian political drama which shows the inner workings of the highest office in the world (House of Cards), or a medley of violence, sex and lust for power which is tastefully done (Narcos) or drama-filled lawyer/courtroom suspense (How to Get away with Murder).
Narcos, a Netflix special, is the best TV series I have seen this year. It is an account of the Pablo Ecobar, a Colombian druglord whose reign of terror, murder and mayhem brought his country to a standstill, until he was hunted down and killed by a specially created taskforce aided by the American Drug Enforcement Agency. It is intriguing, and the theme song starting the series is the most soulful Latin song ever. Have a listen here
I especially enjoyed Narcos and maybe it was because it hit so close to home. Criminal element, Escobar, makes billions through rackets, and enforces his power and influence through bribe, fraud and intimidation. He then tries his hand in politics in a bid to legitimize his standing in society, by contesting for a legislative position.
When he is found out, he swears to make the country ungovernable and makes good on that promise through a systematic crusade of killings, bombings and kidnappings which heats up the polity. He is so above the law, that he is able to negotiate a brief “amnesty” whereby he builds himself his own jail. Many corrupt politicians are in involuntary confinement, dungeon-ed in their huge mansions constructed with stolen commonwealth, and escorted everywhere by their security details – scared sh*tless of reprisals if they had to tango with the common man.
Life imitates art.
Anyway, see my recommendations below. Enjoy!
- House of Cards
- Orange Is the New Black
- Downton Abbey
- Narcos
- Daredevil
- Marco Polo
- Happy Valley
- How to Get Away With Murder

1. Friends
2. Friends
3. Friends
4. Desperate housewives
5. Modern family
6.Ugly betty
And esco, i beg to differ @ “This was not the case a decade ago, when TV was seen as the last desperate act by a falling movie star”” I do not believe this is true.
Early episodes of Friends saw George clooney, that previous james bond dude Selleck (for an entire season or so), Charlie sheen and even Brad Pitt feature in them. They had no qualms with cameo appearances in this show and were all successful actors at the time. Even robin williams was in an early episode of friends and this was when he was enjoying enormous success. Julia roberts also featured in 2 episodes.
I could go on and on but i guess the above not only shows i am addicted to the tv show FRIENDS but also proves my point.
Too much nudity in the current tv shows on air (yuck) and most of them are not even funny cos its all tied to sex innuendos. Nothing new or entertaining, all sex, sex, sex (like i dont hear about it enough (man will not date you without trying to draw ya pant like generator) i have to pay to watch it again..mtcheww). I dont have a problem with sex just tired of everyone acting like its food.

I love you for loving Ugly Betty.

Since you’re an Ugly Betty fan, I’m minded to ask – do you also watch “Jane the Virgin”? Does anyone watch it? It’s pretty much cut from the same cloth as “Ugly Betty”, I got sucked into it one random day not long after Season 1 began in the UK and now I’m addicted. Plus, I will unashamedly admit that one of the main reasons I watch it is because Justin Baldoni, the guy who plays Rafael (the father of Jane’s artificially-injected baby) is HOT. Chei, that man is fire!!! … ladies, God truly created something wonderful when He spent time on that gorgeous man…. *clears throat*. See me rooting for him and Jane like na my sister I dey try set up with husband.
Season 1’s now over and here’s hoping my interest doesn’t die away before season 2 begins.
Agree with you that they don’t make shows like they used to. My first love in the genre was Ally McBeal before I progressed unto Boston Legal (props to William Shatner and James Spader who will always remain true bosses for life!!). Then I got hooked on The Office (US edition) and damn if practically every episode of that show isn’t guaranteed to make me cry from laughter. Jim, Michael and Dwight, I love you lunatics with your daily work-related shenanigans…
Finally, I’ll always have room in my heart for the “Gilmore Girls”, my cheesy and guilty pleasure of the early noughties. 🙂

@MS SA I loved loved Ally Mcbeal saw it to the end. Saw all the seasons of Gilmore girls, And then of course Boston legal. William Shatner was insane with his small legs he is always showing off when he strips in the office.
But this Jane the virgin, i am now on the lookout for as i can now totally trust your judgement on tv shows.
Mz SA, i am kinda excited that i am not alone in this world…and someone somewhere is as sappy as i am..hehehhe
@Frank …i love you too. Ugly Betty is still one of my all time favorites. I keep watching reruns till date.

GILMORE GIRLS for the win! Love that show!
I rewatch Big Bang Theory on the daily…not sure I’m loving the new season though. I haven’t been itching to watch it..maybe it’s work.
Heart Game of Thrones. I love Tyrion!
I used to love Glee. Then it went south.
Modern Family too…but then there was the poor joke about a Nigerian family and I was over it.
I feel like I missed out on Parks and Recreation…I’m gonna try to get all episodes.

@Nike, ?? I concur that those two fellows are not alright. Usually turn on the subtitle function on my digi-box just so I can catch every single thing the narrator says.
@Somtoo, nne I “yam” flattered but honestly think anyone who enjoyed Ugly B will appreciate the similarities in “Jane”. Plus, a friend of mine told me the lead character won some sort of award recently (& gave a Lupita-esque thank you speech) so the ratings seem to be good.

yea @Nike the narrator in Jane the Virgin is super hilarious…it got to a time when i started pitying him for narrating a previous episode in a new episode…lool…while watching it, i kept saying chaiiiii…loool

The best TV Series are
1. Friends
2. Game of Thrones (You, Mr Esco, are a learner if you fing GoT meh. Dont piss me off!!!)
3. Homeland
4. Greys Anatomy (Season 1 till George o’Malley died)
5. Breaking Bad
6. Downton Abbey
7. Sex and the City
The reason Scandal, How to get away with murder and other season of Grey’s Anatomy are not on this list is because MAdam Shonda Rimes just like Melodrama. It is very annoying.
I watch Grey’s anatomy now just because of Meredith. Christina, my favourite character is out 🙁 I’m over the others.

You are highly on point about grey’anatomy. Shonda rhimes cannot just make a story about George travelling to Iraq and never comes back, or Mcsteamy or lexie joining another hospital or “som’n”! She just had to kill all of them. Shonda is a sadist but I can’t help watching her shows.

Mz Socially Awkward...
October 15, 2015 at 12:54 pm
For some reason, I can’t really get into Criminal Minds because:-
a. It’s some really gory stuff on each episode… as in properly scary business with the sort of crimes they investigate.
b. in my head, it’s pretty much the same as NCIS and CSI (of which, I don’t understand why the producers for both shows went with almost similar acronyms), where an episode focuses on a case then solves the case before the 60mins is over. So, I’m not feeling any continuity with the characters and there’s no compulsion to click to it the following week to pick up the story from where it left off the last week. Does that make sense? Maybe I haven’t been patient enough with it…
Bobosteke & Lara Bian
October 15, 2015 at 7:01 pm
Nne that Criminal Minds, eh, I had to give myself pause o. As in the kain depth of brain mismanagement these persons suffer from… I remember one episode where the man was collecting female legs. Ah mean, there are people like that out there!
For me, the fact that there is no continuity really makes it all the better. I don’t like the suspense. The Practice nearly did me in. That kind of hangment should be illegal. It was so crazy we all would be on pins and needles till the following Thursday, be stalking Silverbird at 8:00pm.
I remember Ally Macbeal, when Billy died. My mum travelled interstate to see us at school and the first words out of her mouth were “Billy ti Ku” (Billy is dead). See as my mama come spoil face, come dey say how person go just lie down for court dey sleep for ground come die? Or was it when Paloma’s beaus’ psychiatrist stood in her birthday suit in front of him. The agitation made her scream, “His psychiatrist nakeded herself in front of Diego”. I did not have the heart to ask her what nakeded meant.

I would have included downton abbey but lets face that show ended when mathew crawley died. there’s no story again. I still like the show tho.
how to get away with murder is too over dramatic and over the top. Grey’s anatomy post Christina and Mcdreamy is just a no no. They should pack up. I stopped watching when Christina left o. Anyone remember Passions? Ahh that show is the reason I dont watch TV shows any more until the last episode of the last season. Every time I had to wait for a week to watch the next one I died a slow death. As it stands, I am waiting for Power, Empire, Game of thrones, Orange is the new black, Gotham, to finish (no matter how many years GOT takes) so I can start watching them. Criminal minds is an exception to this rule actually. I LOVE criminal minds (I cannot watch some episodes by myself, home alone but still. fantastic show), Hannibal is also a slight exception. I like to watch an episode a month that way I can stretch it. lool. Did anyone see Fear? it was a series that had just one season, boy was it intense.
Desperate housewives was good, as was gossip girl (ooh the blair and chuck angst), HOUSSEEEEEE, Fresh Prince, ooh Damon!!! Girlfriends until it ended unceremoniously. Fuji House of Commotion, and ooh Everyday people. let me go back to work..

I was actually waiting for someone to mention If Loving You Is Wrong!!! People are sleeping on this TV show. Yes its cheesy and corny and oh so Tyler Perry but its so reminiscent of our daily lives as women that you cant even hate on it.
My list goes thus;
a. The Good Wife( Y’all are sleeping on Alicia Florrick, Cary Argos and Finn, one yummy somebody lai that)
b. Grey’s Anatomy (I don’t know why I still even bother after they have killed off everybody. I am just here holding a candle light to Jackson Avery and April Kepner and hoping Shonda Rhimes wont totally destroy me by breaking them up).
c. Downton Abbey( Bruno was right on this one. They sorta lost the plot when the killed of Mathew Crawley but its still a good show so I watch)
d. If Loving You Is Wrong
e. Orange is the New Black
f. Orphan Black
g. Suits
h. Reign
i. Single Ladies ( Please don’t judge me.I love Keisha Green and Malcolm and Omar)
j. Being Mary Jane
k. Black list
l. Homeland( Boy, I was so happy when they killed Brody. Very annying character. Peter Quinn still my absolute fave out of them all)
m. Tyrant ( Crazy and Psychotic but yummy Jamal Alfayeed but he is sugar daddy goals sha and his gorgeous wife Leila. Really nice plot they gat too.)

When you wrote that Game of thrones was meh for you…I stopped reading the rest of the article. Well, i guess fantasy isnt for everyone. As a couch potatoe iv seen all the good tv series from the days of Seinfeld and fraiser to the most recent ones … they all get to that point where you can see the script writers are spent and they have nothing more to offer. Unfortunately the recent ones (especially those from shonda rhimes), just seem like American versions of mexican soaps. I hope ‘ howto get away with murder’, doesnt end up like scandal and greys anatomy where everything gets so complicated that you feel theres nothing more to see, cus i like Viola Davies. For those that like unconventional comedy I recommend Louie

I stopped watching scandal half way the first few episodes.. Olivia’s “mistress” status didn’t sit well with me.. I don’t understand why women like scandal… anyway… all of shonda rhimes shows are too politically correct( including Empire ugh)
CSI Las Vegas was the only show I could watch for years without dropping midway.. I have watched Once upon a time, the walking dead, Homeland, modern family,, GOT, revenge, teen wolf, Vampire diaries, True blood and many more.. funny thing is I haven’t been able to get past the 3rd/4th seasons of these shows except for CSI LAS VEGAS… HMMM….
Lost was good for the first few seasons until my fav characters died n it started getting creepier and confusing… Prison Break was the best back in the day.. still wish it didn’t end so early.

I enjoy them equally as much as a really good show
ps if you really want to see a better version of narcos .. with more details and action with a better actor playing pablo, some one more fitting and charismatic watch “pablo escobar” the series. I saw it before narcos without even knowing narcos was coming and i was blown and it better than narcos.

I’ll say Hotel Majestic should be the “it” right now. Came back home n discovered 8pm evey weekday is dedicated to watching Hotel Majestic. from my parents down to my lil twin brothers, who are just 7 years so I’ll say it appeals to quite a large audience. October 16, 2015 at 5:10 pm
Esco, Most of the Nigerian TV Series are not on You Tube, I don search tire, DSTV Channels 151, 153 and 165 are the best channels to watch Nigerian series. I was even looking for the last episode of Before 30, I keep missing it on TV even the reruns, but when do people have time to watch all these series, plus if you are in a large family with varying interests, young children want to watch Nickelodeon, Disney channel, older ones want to watch football and music channels, even DSTV Explora cannot work. Some ten years back when I was inbetween jobs I could keep up, did any one ever watch McLeods Daughters on one channel that has been changed to Universal channel

One of the most educational series I’ve watched is Drop Dead Diva. The actually plot is unrealistic and the name sounds like a chick flick, but if you want to learn about law I suggest you watch it.
My top series are/ were The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Kyle XY.
I suddenly can’t remember all the series I’ve watched.

Supernatural, (any thing for the Winchester boys especially Dean ”drooling”).
Sleepy Hollow, ( yep, I love me some Ichabod crane anytime, especially the way he says Leftenant).
The originals, ( you cannot hate Nicklaus but Elijah, you just have to love).
Two and a half men, ( Alan, my neurotic bundle of mess).
And off course the almighty Game of Thrones, ( Dear Jon, really hope you come back as Ghost. I refuse to believe your death).
Hmm, the great Empire, ( Cookie, Cookie, Cookie. That’s all I got……Cookie).
Buffy the Vampire slayer, (Buffy and Angel, two star crossed supernatural couple).
Suits, ( I love Harvey’s ties).
Naruto, yes Naruto ( it’s a Japanese animé but great watch and you got to love uzumaki Naruto’s ”Never give up”).
Bleach, ( Kurosaki Ichigo, I love his bankai.)
Avatar, the last air bender, ( team avatar! or fearsome foursome).
I’ll stop here now, if I continue heaven knows what will make the list.

Another Avatar fan?. Ola. I’m the kinda person that when I get done with a movie or series, I just don’t leave the theater room or shut down my laptop. I love to see the Cast then I begin my research.
for avatar, it was quite intense. I mean you just have to go down to the culture n religion being depicted. I really really do like Avatar alot. it’s really quite informative. one thing I really like, is its depiction of the spiritual realm et al. I really need to work. I don’t think I’ve left comments this way before. well , Hasta la vista Avatar fan.?

Esco, we’re officially done since you don’t like Game of thrones, loool. Bruno, I feel you jare. You know I cried as Sessi Lannister was being humiliated? She’s mean and all but no one deserves that and they’re so gonna be dead in the next season. And my silver-haired Queen is in trouble but she’ll waltz out gracefully. What about that oldie guy that loves her and became a night walker in season 5. I tell you season 6 is gonna be too much.
I hate Empire ehn, the hype was so much that I delved in with great expectations and it was just a couple of ghetto people shouting up and down. I mean, I love me some Taraji but I think she was overdoing the whole thing and I only watched season 1! And since I heard Power is just like EMpire, no Power for me. Thank you.
Orange is the new Black was also over-hyped and very basic but maybe it’s just me. I got bored and it felt like a low-budget movie.
The shows I love and currently watch are
Devious maids (yup, I love the everyone sleeps with everyone drama)
Two and half men (my closest friends can tell who this is just by my love for Charlie…this show could never get old for me…)
Two Broke girls (Yes, sitcom is my thing)
Mistresses
Homeland
Dallas! (they stopped this one already but give me some JR wickedness and sexiness)
Desperate housewives

I’ve often noted that when we want to indulge our obscene appetites, we use the words for the “matured audience”. Who is matured? Our minds are forever evolving with whatever we feed them with. Images, phrases and impressions stay with us far longer than we can imagine. Sometimes we have no idea how incredibly fickle the ties that bind us to humanity are and how dangerously we toy with them when we do not censure what we watch.
On to the tori, I watch TV for escapism which is why I love comedy. Laughter remains the best medicine and I can’t get enough of Meet the Browns, The Nanny and The Family. I also happen to love theme songs like the one from King of Queens and P.S. I Love You. I love detecting and suspense as well which is why Blue Bloods, The Unit, Army Wives, NCIS, and Rookie Blue remain in my arsenal.
On the Nigerian scene. gimme Dear Mother, Dominos, Fortunes then we can do some talking.

Bobo, you couldnt have put it better. These days I find that when I watch certain TV series with potent depictions of violence, thrill or drama, very close to bedtime, and on my tablet, it takes me sometime to unwind fully so that I can sleep.

That “if loving you is wrong” is all kinds of sick!!! But I am really beginning to hate how they drag scenes out on many of Tyler Perry’s series. They get stuck on a conversation for sooo long it definitely crosses the line to being ridiculous. Like on a recent episode of for better or worse when they found out about Marcus’ love child from “te te” and the whole crew descends on their house trying to be nosey. An entire episode was about Marcus and Tasha trying to kick these people out of their house an entire flipping episode!!!!!
I really don’t enjoy TV series so I stopped watching haves and haves nots after 2 seasons, if loving you is wrong after just 1 season.

October 15, 2015 at 3:12 pm
Empire for me is highly overrated. Shallow plot hidden behind good music, fashion and good looking actors. I barely made it through Season 1 and I am definitely not interested in seeing 2. Scandal is interesting but I find the twists a bit annoying and find the on and off affair between Olivia & Fitz irritating sometimes.
Amongst my favourite series (TV Drama & Reality) has to be 1. Greys Anatomy 2. Rookie Blue 3. So You Think You Can Dance 4. House of Cards 5. Game of Thrones 6. The West Wing 7. Newsroom 8. Master Chef Junior 9. Desperate Housewives 10. Ugly Betty 11. Scouted 12. The Sopranos, 13. Mad Men 14. New Girl 15. 16. 24, Others would include Seventh Heaven 2. Friends 3. Fawlty Towers 4. Yes Minister and 5. Who Needs to Know (Funke Akindele).
Lost and Prison Break wasn’t able to hold the plot together after a while.

Girl, I thought I was the only one who didn’t like Empire and you’re so right about the shallow plot behind good music. And if you loved Desperate Housewives, you’d love Devious Maids. I heard it was produced by Eva Longoria (Gabby from Desperate Housewives).
Classic Mrs. P! Evelyn and her husband are positively wicked and interesting.
Ready
October 15, 2015 at 8:21 pm
I don’t get Devious Maids. The premise was just always offensive to me. Is it that it’s cool to perpetuate the stereotype of Latinas as maids and housekeepers, but it’s a problem when the rest of the world does it? Meh for me. Empire….I’m on the fence. I want Taraji to win so hard, but Lee Daniels is going to ruin it, I just know it.
Like how Ryan Murphy ruined Nip Tuck and Glee.

Stress from work, traffic and attending to family hardly gives me time for series these days. The only series I watched from beginning to end was prison break. One of the best series for me. Started desperate housewives, but after a while it got boring. Started 24, although it was interesting, was just not able to progress beyond season 1. Gossip girl was ok but began to focus on s.e.x too much. For the recent ones, watch all CSI’s whenever it shows (though NY is my fav) also cold case. Heard the hype about GOT and decided to watch. But like you I personnally think its meh. Too many nude scenes, rape, incest and gay scenes to give it more appeal I guess.

The WIRE!!! hands down the best TV series ever made… SONS OF ANARCHY, so under the radar but the ‘ride’ (pun) was too awesome. I can defend those two anyday anytime. As for presently running, Black Sails is great. Going way back in time, Secrets of the sand and Passions!!!

I forgot “Commander-in-Chief” where the president of The United States was a woman. It was only 18 episodes; cancelled after the first season. It was a shame really, but it aired around the time Obama and Clinton were vying for their party’s nomination for his first term in office. It had a lot of political undertones. I still have some quotes I learnt from the series.

Even in State of Affairs with the Boko Haram episode, Hakeem Kae Kazeem who is Nigerian featured and ended up speaking some language that wasn’t Hausa or even close or sounded like a Nigerian language in my opinion anyway and they were supposed to be in sambisa forest but come on, it’s modern family, I couldn’t stop watching)
Blindspot
Mindy project because Mindy Kaling is the bomb
Two broke girls
Devious maids
Mistresses
New Girl
Chicago Fire
Chicago PD
HTGAWM
I watched most of Empire season 1 cos of the hype and it was horrible, the stereotyping and over the top acting plus luscious feeling like some God was too painful to continue. They should have focuses more on actually producing good music
Greys Anatomy just for Jackson&April and Alex Karev only. Do not care for Jo.
Flash
Arrow
I don’t know why I’m still watching AHS, asylum was the best
Jane the Virgin
Young and Hungry
Younger
There’s more but I’ll just stop here to keep the illusion that I have some life.

i haven’t started watching the season 2 of Empire, but judging from what i am seeing, i just hope Empire doesn’t get cancelled due to low ratings. i am hooked like Neck-Deep hooked on GOTHAM, i mean the show has everything you want. And Cameron Monaghan is a wonderful actor (what he did with the joker on Gotham, i mean c’mon, Heath Ledger would be proud of this fella) and Jared Leto is in BIG TROUBLE. Quantico is another good Series you have to start watching. Priyanka Chopra is amazing, A former miss world and her fellow trainees are all spectacular.. i just love the suspense .
i wrote an article on new interesting tv series.. yeyepikin.com/2015/10/new-interesting-tv-series-you-should-be-watching/
i have so many favorite TV series starting from The Mentalist, Friends, How i Met your Mother……
