Ambode: Lagos has 33,000 Policemen for Population of over 20 Million

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Saturday made a shocking revelation: The state has only 33, 000 policemen providing security for over 20 million residents.

Ambode made the revelation during the closing session of the four-day leadership retreat for the state’s executive council, permanent secretaries as well as some heads of parastatals, Punch reports.

“We’re not yet where we want to be. We have only just 33, 000 policemen in Lagos for a population of over 20 million. Again, we don’t have control over these police officers. We need to let the Commissioner of Police leave this retreat believing that the Police need to own their own business just the way we have told ourselves that we want to own the business of governance. We need to see some things change. There has to be some form of paradigm shift; we want to see our police officers patrol in convoy between 12 midnight and 4am.

People must see improvement on it. That’s why on our part, we have gone out of our budget limits, using our resources from the Security Trust Fund, to say that, yes, it might not be within our budget, but we would spend money to support the Police because if the state is safe, the economy will thrive, ” he said.

    Dude, raise your game.
No need for all this lousy excuses.
33,000 police officers or 200 police officers, crimes in traffic at Mile 2, Oworo, Apongbon and Oshodi should not be on the increase. How many thieves have been caught in these places? Men and Women are being robbed in slow moving traffic and you are busy reciting epistles.
    Simply not good enough.

Raise his game? how? he’s not the commissioner or IGP. The total personnel strength of the nigerian police is approximately 371,800 in a country of 150 million. That’s roughly a ratio of one police officer to 404 citizens and that’s why we need to set up state police but AA can’t Unilaterally make that decision.
Beht at the same time, he’s just not taking charge at all.

So, time to think outside of the box-
    1-start community vigilante groups
2-withdraw security details for all political appointees and their wives(?), recall all those given to VIPs and chiefs, Baales, Oba’s, Eze and emires(they have their juju priests, let them protect them the native way). That should get us back at least another 10,000 cops. You have to negotiate a special status for Lagos to implement my next idea, at least now your party is in power.
3-create your own special police force and arm them. I believe anyone is allowed to carry a weapon as long as it is registered, right? Then do so. In fact this one idea will help employ an additional 40,000 unemployed graduates. And I am almost certain that their quality and standard will be far better than that of the NPF.
4-then Ambo (god knows I put my reputation on the line supporting this man) Ambo, really needs to toughen up. Forget being a corporate man, lagos needs a hands on person. That was who we had in Fashola. You cannot be a mr. Nice in Lagos. You have to micro manage. You wanted the job you have to carry the weight. There is no sleep, enough of your retreat your team has to come back ready to serve with speed and determination. Ambode – running lagos is 24hr undertaking. Please don’t disappoint.
5- scare people out of lagos to reduce population growth and constant migration there-Tax everything, yes! Frustrate people back to ogun, osun and oyo. Let them stay in their states. All those long distance transport services bringing people from the east add additional landing tax,say 1000%, for even venturing near lagos. Then the folks from the north, makes their 2000%(they really don’t have much to contribute other than bring their cattle to graze the little foliage we have in lagos and sell chewing gum. In fact, build a wall around the state and tax everybody coming in. This may sound extreme, but it will work. Lagos should only be for people who can afford it.

Thank you for expending energy to type detailed points. I am actually loving the radical points you listed.
If you could come up with such valuable points in few minutes, I wonder what Ambode and his team came up with after their vaunted retreat?
Dude needs to quit clubbing and make Lagos work.
He does not even exude confidence. He looks lost and sounds overwhelmed.

Quite an insight and i agree on all but one of your points because simple economics still prevails. If you chase everybody away what will happen to the IGRs’. Money does not generate itself in a vacuum.

hahahahhaha.. love it. love it love your comment.
i didnt campaign for Ambo, infact his campaign posters were disgraceful- holding hand up and checking watch …like huhn? i told my friends this dude is too fat for lagos..we need someone with plenty energy…he looks too relaxed for this job and here he is, in all his glory validating my points, looking lost and all.

Traffic is unbecoming, do u know that there are over 400 brand new air-conditioned BRT buses just sitting idle in a state of the art garage in Ikorodu? Apparently, Ambo is too weak to stand up to the union guys who have to go to bourdillion to settle the need for them to leave the road for the new busues

Everyone is then forced to drive, roads are jammed, commuters looking deranged and acting like maniacs on the road cos they are in a rush to get to work when faced with snaillike moving traffic.

Lets not even begin to address crime rate, poverty, drugs being peddled , high cost of POWER and rising cost of consumer goods in lagos supermarkets…? Seems everyone is just doing what they like.

Ambode, respect yourself. EITHER S,,T OR GET OF THE POT!

Gov Ambode, the same 33000 policemen have been protecting Lagos for the last 8 years and we have had relative peace; the population of Lagos has not increased by over a million in 6 months…. so, what has changed??

your excuses don’t make any sense. Please get yourself together.. please and please. Do not ruin our beloved Lagos.

Some people only find solutions while some find excuses…. Ambode, Fashola used this same number…to provide security…. so please stop complaining. It’s not about the number but how the state has contributed to their training.

This is the problem with Nigeria, it’s not about continuity…. it’s about the individuals ability to lead and plan. I expect that for your first year u should work closely with your predecessor…..especially when u are this clueless

Mr Ambode, you ought to have learnt from the immediate past Federal Government that sitting back, complaining and making excuses for underperformance will not impress right thinking Nigerians again. No. Never again. What that means is that your current approach will not deliver you on the day of reckoning. We will be monitoring your activities and if by His grace we survive the current insecurity in Lagos to the end of your administration, we shall show you your score card. I’m only afraid if APC realise what you are doing to them in Lagos. Thank you.

Empower 33,000 policemen and see the wonders that they will do, it will be much more than the 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish that fed the multitude situation…

Again, increase the salary of these policemen…or something. These guys are openly taking bribe in broad daylight.. its shameful. blatantly harassing people to give them money…tsk tsk stsk… just shameful
