Alison-Madueke Reacts to Al Jazeera’s Documentary | Says It “is the latest attempt to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it”

Diezani Alison-Madueke

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke has reacted to the Al Jazeera documentary that displayed an $18 million property with furnishing worth $2 million in Asokoro, Abuja, which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it seized from the former minister. Click here if you missed it.

In the video, EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu was quoted as saying, “We have been able to take on a lot of big shots that were hitherto untouchable”.

Diezani in a statement on Monday said that the report is the latest attempt by her detractors to “demonise and damage” her image in the public space.

According to Vanguard, the statement read:

My attention has been drawn to a report by Al Jazeera, which was released on Monday as a testament to the effectiveness of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its war against corruption.

In the video report, which has been widely circulated in the social media, there are claims about me owning a property in Abuja allegedly worth $18 million. The report, which represents everything ridiculous and despicable about professional media practice and global best practices in the war against corruption, is the latest attempt to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

Clips of jewelry allegedly worth over $2 million were also copiously displayed as if to feed the cravings of an audience gratified with the notion that every wealthy Nigerian is corrupt.

This will not be the first time calculated attempts have been made to demonise and damage my reputation in the public space. Many times, my detractors have gotten away with these irresponsible smear campaigns because they have become accustomed to my characteristic approach of silence in the face of these callous attacks.

The latest in the string of propaganda attacks launched against my person since I left government as Nigeria’s Petroleum Minister is this Al Jazeera report, which without any court conviction anywhere in the world attempts to dress Diezani Alison Madueke in the garb of a common criminal.

This, to say the least, is the height of journalistic brigandage and a sheer mockery of Nigeria’s anti-corruption war before the eyes of the world who are watching and asking if the war against corruption is a circus show where suspects are prosecuted and sentenced on the pages of newspapers and video blogs without anything as remotely in the semblance of a trial in the courts of law.

When did it become a crime to own a property in Nigeria? When did it become a crime for a woman of my status to have in her possession, jewelry? Jewelry, which women all across the world, including the woman selling tomatoes in Bodija market have in abundance in their closets? In which court of law, anywhere in the world was I prosecuted by the EFCC and found guilty of corruption?

With all sense of modesty, I say this only for posterity and for the records. I (strove) within my means and the blessings of God to live a decent and accomplished life. I studied architecture in England and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Howard University, United States of America in 1992. When I returned to Nigeria that same year, I joined Shell Petroleum Development Corporation.

In 2002, I obtained an MBA at Cambridge University, United Kingdom. In April 2006, I was appointed by Shell as the company’s first female Executive Director in Nigeria. In July 2007, I was appointed by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as Minister of Transport.

The next year in December 2008 I became Minister of Mines and Steel Development. In April 2010, I was appointed as Minister for Petroleum Resources and served in that capacity till May 2015. During this period as Petroleum Minister, I had the honour of serving Nigeria and representing her in the Organization of Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC) where I was elected first female President.

All through my career, I (strove) to maintain a record of hard work, integrity and excellence, giving my best to society, because my parents raised me in the consciousness that a man or woman’s greatness is defined not by the amount of wealth they have acquired but the impact of their service to God and humanity.

Coming at such a critical time in my life when I am battling cancer, this poorly executed propaganda bares on its face like tribal marks, a clearly malicious attempt to victimize an innocent woman in what appears an exaggerated plot to validate and give credibility to the anti-corruption crusade under Nigeria’s new regime. People who are battling cancer or those who have lost their loved ones to this medical condition understand what I am going through at this time.

This is what makes me ponder at the cold-heartedness of those who will go any length to defame and destroy in the name of propaganda. What happened to our shared humanity?

I have absolute regard for the law and believe that people who have breached the laws that govern societies should be made to face the wrath of the law. But in a civilized society, a responsible government owes its citizens absolute commitment to the principles of rule of law, equity, fairness and justice. I have been wrongfully and maliciously maligned and those behind this reckless action know it.

I leave them to posterity, their conscience and above all the Almighty God who is the final judge of all.

The fight and consequence of corruption needs to start somewhere. It’s not only by mouth but we need serious action ultimately substantial results. There needs to be something to show the fight against corruption is working and the country is progressing. Let them serve time in jail, seize their properties, fine them, request they return the looted money, and limit their freedom of running to other countries to hide under cancer. Report them to the country they are in, they have committed a crime against their own country. Therefore, they should return. $18million alone can build an advanced, well equipped hospital that specializes in cancer treatment, this officials won’t be so quick to waste the country’s money running to other countries, that’s if this woman really has cancer. No wonder the country is dry and bankrupt bcos one person has all this money sitting there.
Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, the mentality of I’m bigger than the government is embedded deeply in their minds. It’s difficult, almost impossible to get the end result in a place like Nigeria where the justice system has failed and only benefited criminals. If you have money to get hundred of lawyers, even when guilty you get away with serious crimes, and still remain in power this is evident in Saraki’s case.
So, the government don’t have that much power, which is absurd. The rich criminals control the government.
Buhari, will have to fight with iron fist.

Jonathan administration should be probed. It’s ridiculous to make it a party thing or suggest other past adm to be probed bcos then we won’t get anywhere with it. Let’s start with the most recent one, and I’m sure from there other past leaders name will be mentioned. Then the administration that comes after Buhari should follow the same protocol. That’s when change will be rightly implemented.
I don’t want to keep hearing about Diezani, pity story. Charge her, take her to court. Not just her but many that are connected to her.

Allison should be ashamed of herself. Her level of greed knew no bounds. She felt she was untouchable and acted it in everything she did. Cancer shouldn’t take you away, I want you to be made an example of for the the abuse of your office. It’s a shame you’re a women, you and cecelia Ibu should be locked away on far away Guantanamo bay never to return in life.

      @nene
You make absolutely no sense. People call me a tribalist for saying certain things thats not divisive just general statement. However, I’m appalled how Nene gets away with her blatant tribalist divisive foolish comments. She turns everything into tribalism.

You are always defending Jonathan Goodluck and refuse to see the deep corruption under his administration. He said, he curtailed corruption. He should give examples, evidence of how and what he did bcos result of his administration is showing something different.
He must be delusional. It doesn’t matter whether the previous or current is corrupt. The point is, there’s too much evidence of corruption under Jonathan. Diezani and kola Aluko are examples who still want to justify their actions. Is it the Dasuki’s case? She’s using cancer to cover her guilt. How can someone embezzle this much government money and get away with it.
I could care less if she has cancer, dying tomorrow she needs to be held accountable. She should have thought of her cancer when she was accumulating all this material possession. I mean, is she taking all this to heaven, I mean hell.
Diezani, kola Aluko and her other partners needs to be arrested now.

Are you all for real? You jumo to conclusions and accuse the woman…
While I was in school back in 2001, I had a friend who’s dad was being paid $40,000 by Mobil and that was just salary alone. When you add all the job bonuses, he’d probably be earning around $100k as at then. Allison Madueke was a top official with Shell, how much do you think she was earning with all the bonuses and all that? Coupled with all the business she probably had?

I am not saying she didn’t loot, she looted just like every other Nigerian politician, the figures being exaggerated are overwhelming. Do you guys know the amount of houses Tinubu has? The ones Atiku has? And other politicians? Do you know their worths? Come on…Even if the house is worth $18m, I can tell you a normal Shell manager can afford it after working for 20 years…Y’all should stop being gullible…

    June 14, 2016 at 9:49 am

This woman needs to stop! Like for real just stop.

Instead of addressing the big elephant in the room, which is “HOW THE HELL CAN A GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE HAVE A HOUSE WORTH 18 million dollars (lets for the sake of simplifying the argument leave the jewelry out of this)???

How much does a Minister of Petroleum earn per annum (salary + allowances)? How much was your total net worth before gaining the Ministerial assignment? Also how was your husband’s total net worth?

When you supply us with documents that can be audited independently that verify that that the $18 million dollars are from your sweat and blood (and not the government coffers) then I will believe you.

Also if the house is not yours, then we need to know who has the house and we will need to verify how they make their money.

Until then, please stop adding insult to the injury of stealing from us. We are not simpletons. We recognize you for who and what you are:

A Thief. A liar. A greedy, corrupt, horrible person. Plain and simple.

If it doesn’t bother you to rub your people blind while witnessing the high level of poverty and pain they endure everyday, then you ought to also have the courage to bear being called names.

    Hiss!!!!

I am going to start a blog and just write letters to every single one of these people and their children. Call them out by name – one by one. This arm chair activist don tire me.

We know the agenda. Whip up sentiments knowing the average Nigerian will not ask rational questions. We also know why Bubu could not release the names of the looters as promised. Diezani has vowed she will not go down alone. I just laugh when people waste their data making obtuse comments about this woman. . Do you know what it means to be Minister of Petroleum in a “fantastically” corrupt country like Nigeria? You will be shocked if Diezani starts talking. All your saints are just petty thieves afterall.

By the way, if that house shown yesterday is worth 18M USD then, Trump became President of the US yesternight. Diezani has her flaws but, the propaganda is too much. Bring her to justice and let her have her day in court. Enough of the circus. Like play, like play one year is gone. Electioneering starts next year. What is then left of the change agenda when politicians will start fighting/strategizing for 2019?

Get well soon Diezani and come back home and sing.

Who drinks with golden cup,who adorn themselves with diamonds, who are the dealers of gold in this country? You brandish a woman’s pearls , corals and jewelries and sum it $2 million dollars????

Is it because she is pretty and gorgeous? Is it because she didn’t cover her jewelries with veil????? Abeg dont let us go tribal . Who is Deziani compared to Maryam Abacha and her kids, or Babangida and family, or Yaradua, or Sanusi and concubines, or Tinubu household, or late Stella Obasanjo,Tambuwal or you think we are bl=ind ……..? We have women who have never worked adorn themselves and children how much more a career woman?

Back to the matter, EFCC do your job fairly.
    Nigeria didn’t start 2011.

Aisha the saloon practitioner donated over 135 million naira to IDP while her husband went borrowing 20 million for presidential form, have they probed where she got it?
What is EFFC waiting for to probe Halliburton, Siemens. Is IBB’s 12 billion oil boom recorvered, is OBJ untouchable? Is Atiku, Amaechi, Fashola ,Fayemi petition archived?.

The names i have heard from EFCC have been Southerners and PDP members or at most APC obdurate like Saraki why the tribal coloration and smell eg ,Deziani, FKK,Ebun Adegboruwa, Tompolo,Sulivan Chime, Orubebe,Akpobolokemi,Olise Metu,GEJ

In the north its been Dasuki Buhari’s sworn enemy, former Gombe PDP governor, why don’t we see equal fight?
Why do you poke my eyes and expect i should be silent? How many times have they brandished well known Mariam Abacha Swiss acclaimed major looter on Aljazeera?

When we see the truth and turn away in Nigeria is astonishing.

Please Madam Allison Madueke, do not insult our intelligence. Yes indeed, it is NOT a crime to own property in Nigeria nor is it a crime to acquire jewellery in mass quantity. You are allowed to do so with YOUR money.

The crime madam is that YOU acquired ALL of this through ill-gotten wealth, through tax payers’ money!!! CRIME!!!

Mrs. Madueke YOU have indeed shown us what a woman can accomplish when she works hard. Congratulations!! However, YOU have also shown us what GREED and LACK OF CONSCIENCE does to an individual.

Regardless of what you have accomplished thus far, YOUR legacy is forever tainted due to YOUR GREED.

Generations to come will know that the first female Executive Director of Shell in Nigeria and first female President of OPEC was also synonymous with CORRUPTION!!!

      June 14, 2016 at 2:27 pm

      Thanks @ Iphie,
Some people just want to hear the figure. They just yearn to hear or read the humongous sum said to be stolen. No need for further questions.
That’s how Sanusi, as CBN governor, claimed that NNPC could not account for over $49billion. Ngozi said it wasn’t possible. They both met and thereafter Ngozi said it was $10b that was yet to be ‘reconciled’. Sanusi was silent. So we thought there was a consensus, afterall they had a meeting and resolved it before NOI issued the statement.
Few days later, the spirit descended on him again and Sanusi told Nigerians it was about $12.5b. Shoooo? We thought that it had ended. Nay, he woke up another day and told us it was $20b. So, he gave 4 different figures concerning one transaction. And this man was the CBN governor, who was supposed to be a master of figures. Well, he had the effrontery to do it because he knew he was dealing with Nigerians.
The $20b stuck. Till this day some Nigerians still tell me one woman stole $20b. Such people don’t care about the preceding inconsistencies. They don’t want know how much Nigeria generated within the period in question.
If Diezani misappropriated public funds, charge her to court, get her convicted. Don’t try her in the media before filing a charge or concluding investigations.
By the way, which estate valuer did the valuation of the house and arrived at $18billion?
Isa Jafaru stayed in EFCC custody for barely 24hrs and left. Rumour has it that he returned some money. Just a grapevine story. And that was the end of the case against him. War against corruption … indeed.

APC has really messed up people’s image using propaganda and malicious lies that cannot be substantiated with objective evidence. I really hope one day they will start biting each others with their endless lies.
The honest truth is, if you’re richer than your neighbor in Nigeria, they will tend to see you as a 419er. If you go to private secondary schools or universities, you’ll be tagged thieves daughter or son. By default, Nigerian will hate you if you have what they can’t afford. No wonder we’re so backward.

Wicked woman, your parents raised you to be a modest and honest. Did your parents also instill the spirit of lies and corruption into your life. Is it from your hard earned salaries that your son was flying a private jet and having party air-bound.
Madam, wouldn’t you have cursed that child if the money he was lavishing was what you really worked for and not embezzled.
I pitied your condition earlier but this time, no more. You’ve seen nothing yet, the thousands of children that sleeps hungry, more thousands that were rendered homeless because of you and your boss-GEJ selfishness and wickedness will never let you know peace till your last day on earth.
If you have shame and fear nothing, come down to Nigeria and face EFCC squarely or are you the only one battling cancer in the world. #demonicdiezani #lieingbastard #shameless-

Curiosity killed the cat right but here are a few bothersome questions:
    – Does Madam Madueke really have cancer?
    – How much was her salary in the space of 14years to be able to afford an $18milion House with $2million fittings?
    – If your hands are so clean, why are all the fingers seemingly smelling.
    – How come the Efcc can release such videos but not of others?
    – Is the Commission bias?
    – Why is the Nigerian government or british goverment passive in contrast to Ibori’s case?
Above all, theres no smoke without fire.
we all need to learn from this in our little way.

Dieziani I sincerely pray that you receive healing, so that you can come back and answer questions, I hope you will be able to expose the Cabal. That’s who Nigerians are after, the big time looters that think they are untouchable. You are just small fry but you must answer too. All of you must answer. If you are not guilty, the law will uphold your innocence. The evil ones must ALL be exposed. APC, EFCC take note. In the meantime, try these people already, why are Metuh and Fani still in custody?

    This RIGHT HERE is all

Cogito ergo sum. June 14, 2016 at 1:19 pm
Nigerians really should allow their God-given brains to engage much more on issues and especially on whatever, on ANY subject, comes from the lips of government, the presidency, politicians and government agencies.

GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. HAS ANYBODY TRIED GOOGLING TO SEE EXAMPLES OF HOUSES/PROPERTIES/REAL ESTATE WORTH EVEN HALF OF $18M? HOW MUCH MORE $18M ITSELF. Even private islands owned by the rich and famous cost from $500,000.00 – $7.5m; really, really, really expensive island estates cost $15m; and it is this house in Maitama that is $18m?

$18m. And for that house in the pictures? This is DOLLARS we are talking about; US dollars; that is about £13m. We are meant to believe that a house costs £13m i.e. thirteen million pounds sterling, here in this country? When it is not IBB’s hilltop mansion? Does even that one cost thirteen million pounds? Even with all its state-of-the-art security? Has anyone bothered to convert this sum to Naira? Mike Adenuga’s mansion in Banana was reported to be =N=8bn.

Anti-corruption is great but the lies and lies from this government plus this, frankly, disturbing obsession with GEJ and ONLY GEJ, has worn completely thin, and is having an effect contrary to what the Buhari presidency and APC apparatchik intend, on me. Clean out the house, yes; beginning from your very own (e.g completely and irrefutably clear, WITH EVIDENCE CERTIFIED AND PLACED IN PUBLIC DOMAIN, all allegations against you, from your rule as Head of State to you your rule at PTF; look right beside you to your party national leader and all his cronies; look among your own closest cronies and associates; look in your political party; look beside you and around you seated around the table with you at every FEC meeting i.e. your cabinet of ministers, etc); then clean out the whole house, the entire house, or at least, make a clear, good, and believable attempt to i.e. take your anti-corruption to GLARING cases from all past governments and not just Jonathan. Is it because they are generals like yourself? What is an army general’s salary? Where did IBB and Marayam’s ASTOUNDING riches come from? Who is/was (the tense has never been settled) Glory Okon (re IBB and Maryam)? What about all the cocaine and drug baronetcy allegations? While on that line, what about the drug running/drug baron/money laundering record with law enforcement of Tinubu and wife in the USA? An army general: where did Obasanjo’s riches come from? You threatened IBB publicly whilst campaigning, accused him of being responsible for all the dirt and rot in the NNPC and petroleum industry today. IBB, through his spokesman, immediately warned you to remember that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones and reminded you that he has files and records of your stewardship and rule as Minister of Petroleum and as Head of the Petroleum Trust Fund, etc. Next thing, suddenly and strangely, both of you went silent on the issues and made up and were hugging and embracing publicly. By your action, or rather, inaction and silence, you put truth to the allegations against you on the $2.8billion dollars that went missing from the NNPC account in Midlands bank, UK during your tenure as Petroleum minister. You just had to go and pay him a courtesy visit along with your vice presidential candidate, national party leader, Amaechi, and others in the run-up to the elections that brought you to Aso Villa. You did not ask him, or yourself, whilst in his hilltop mansion, where on earth an army general (especially as you are one and know all the salary and perks) got the riches to build such an edifice? Why did you suddenly drop the Report on the Halliburton bribe scandal indicting various military generals and Heads of State? Where is (please place in public domain) your authentic, verified and verifiable Cambridge O level school certificate?

It is enough, it is more than enough of the GEJ song; sing a new song, or, sing the same song but amplify it as it should be i.e. CLEAN OUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE. From top to bottom. And the easiest and nearest place to start is you. And your government/cabinet and your political friends and party; then Goodluck Jonathan and his own government, then Olusegun Obasanjo, then Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, then Abdulsalami Abubakar, Oh, and you must not forget Atiku Abubakar, etc, etc, etc.

Then, you’ll be believable. And, laudable.

Na which market dis woman dey go sef? Abi Bulgari open shed market for magodo? Or Fendi dey sell stock fish for surulere? Abeg make she keep kwayet!!! Media trial or not, she should spare us…Some Nigerians that served in the same government as herself did steal, probably just enough. BUT GREEED, oh yes I said i,t GREEEED is what makes some peoples search light bigger than others. Not saying looting in anyway is right but given where 9ja is, when you start furnishing a house for $2million that’s the height of immorality…You can’t justify owning jewelry worth over a million pounds by saying ‘Market Women too own it. Even if they do…its their hard earned money and they wont be excessive in their purchase…oh well same God you pray will expose your enemies shall also carry you join dem…$18m? How many of my smart Nigerian ladies could have gotten grants and scholarships to become what they dreamt of, if that money was used judiciously. Even my Banker wife sef for dey earn better salary if dem put dat pepper for economy.

There was a time someone analyzed this woman’s ill got wealth and I was shocked to my bone to hear that, ‘a woman is richer than some states in Nigeria’….Cancer or no cancer, do yourself a favour, come down to Nigeria, face the EFCC, prove them wrong if you can and re brand your name. I can bet you Diezani, meaningful Nigerians are raining curses on you on a daily basis especially those who suffer in the midst of plenty. There is no smoke without fire, why did you run away immediately PDP lost at the general election, if truly your hands are clean off this allegations, but why are all your fingers seemingly smelling, why is your son lavishing money like a spoiled child? Of course if truly you became wealthy legitimately via your hard work all the acclaimed years, it won’t be possible for you to open your eyes and watch your son behave like a goodie-goodie child that he’s. Children yet unborn will certainly read about you as the most corrupt woman ever in Nigeria!

I dey enjoy these comments o. Sadly, these are all coming as comic relives when Nigerian youths are expected to tackle the major problems objectively and from the root!

    I dey laugh…..Lol.

Idiots, you better get your asses together and prepare to take your life in your hands either by going to the farm or setting up something worthwhile.

See, EFCC is just dey try, dem no dey go far, take it or leave it. If you then want to fight corruption and cleanse Nigeria, then take a lesson from Jerry Rollings in Ghana.

Yes, I said that pessimists and cowards who have no sense of direction and personal identity other than taking sides with thieves from any of the political parties. Better wake up now, or it will be too late!
