The 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA 71) is on-going.

In one of the meetings, two daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari Zahra and Amina – were pictured sitting beside their mother, Aisha.

Noticing it, a Twitter user, Adetutu Balogun (@tutsy22) asked the Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to President Buhari – Garba Shehu – about the source of funds and purpose of their attendance at the meeting.

Adetutu Balogun

Responding to her, Shehu said: “None of President Buhari’s children now with the family in New York traveled on government tickets. The family paid their tickets.”

Sorry dear but this is abuts of office. You take your kids to an official meeting for what? He was the only one there with dependents when the assembly was in session. I’d pardon him if one or both of those girls were on official payroll as his handlers. Yeah, it’s nepotism but better than having them attend because they happen to be his kids. NBA hi call for high standard. No be we ask.

      Madam oversabi,
Please google “United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA 71)” and read what the sessions are all about.

Of course, if you have such a powerful esteem and you are the president of a country, you will always want to take your family, children to such events so they can learn and be surrounded with knowledge and have a better understanding of your career.
I work with the Government where i am based and yes i do bring my family to work events and sessions that allow outsiders so they can benefit, enjoy and experience first hand what i do on a daily basis.

I just get angry when individuals are so short minded. Sorry to say but i do hope you get to a position of higher power, especially if you haven’t attained such position yet, at least then you will have an idea and be very exited to invite friends, and families to attend events to see how what you do goes a long way and impacts so many people especially as a civil servant.

And as for payment, civil servants get paid too and family upkeep, personal expense etc are always separate from their personal salary, at least for presidents, governors, ministers and some other member of cabinet in most cases.

Really! The family paid their tickets to seat at the UN general assembly, when the UN headquarters is closed to the public for the next two weeks because it is holding the UN General Assembly. The last time I checked, the general public are not allowed to visit the UN during the general assembly.

It seems that the only explanation for the fact that the Buhari family is seating at the assembly is because the government- through the ministry of foreign affairs- have enlisted them as delegates representing Nigeria. Now, can Mr Shehu explain to us how one family becomes the primary representatives for the whole of Nigeria?

You guys don’t want the truth. The question was asked and answered. Please stop spreading misinformation. The daughters were listed as dependents and laying for their tickets is a separate issue. I get that we are super sensitive to any abuse of govt but this is getting too much.

This was from the UN’s website: https://protocol.un.org/dgacm/pls/site.nsf/Registration.xsp
The principal and their dependents must be registered with the Protocol and Liaison Service upon their arrival to the New York Metropolitan Area. Do not postpone registration if the principal’s dependents (including household employees) will be arriving separately, they may be registered upon their arrival. Our office strongly recommends you consult the provided checklist prior to submitting all requests.

      Who is a “principal”?
The “principal” is the person who is employed by the mission/office, whether in a diplomatic or non-diplomatic capacity.

      Who are “dependents”?
“Dependents” are immediate family members residing with the principal and household employees that have been directly contracted by them.”

    • Mannie

      September 22, 2016 at 6:53 pm

Tunmi, I’m afraid but I am not satisfied with your evidence. Firstly, Buhari is not employed by the Permanent Missions of Nigeria to the UN, thus implying that he is not qualified to apply as a “principal”. This argument further extends to his family because they do not constitute as “dependents” in this case.
Secondly, Buhari qualifies to attend the meeting on the basis that he is a Head of state. His wife is also permitted to attend too as she is his spouse, as well as delegates from Nigeria. The only way that the Buhari family (Kids, I mean) may have attended this event must have been through being recognised as delegates (which has some crazy “supposed” implications I can’t express).
If you aren’t convinced, please read: https://protocol.un.org/dgacm/pls/site.nsf/files/GA71Arrangements/$FILE/NV_GA71_Arrangements.pdf

Let’s call a spade a spade, not a big spoon.

    • Peyton

      September 22, 2016 at 12:36 pm

It is corruption which is an abuse of public office for private gain. However a vast major of the public thinks its only when XYZ sums which are meant for public purposes are diverted into private accounts then its corruption. They dont realise corruption is not only limited to diversion of funds.

Shehu did they also pay for their tickets a couple of weeks ago when they accompanied their mother to the USA?

Shehu Garba am sure you think Nigerians are zombies!

This same poor conservative family have brazenly displayed so much insensitivity in show of waste and arrogance.

I am upset about the many luxurious items that Aisha Buhari dorns. This was the same family that didn’t have money to buy APC Presodential form and were drinking sachet milo barely 16 months ago. Now they can easily pay for vacation at the UNGA in NYC. What has changed so soon? It’s either they are just 419 hypocrites who lied their way into the government coffers or they have stolen so much within the last 16 months or a mix of those two.

So if you guys sit on your behind and only come on SM to rant then Goodluck to you guys. as I am just thanking God that I am not in that country right now, if I was, it’s only God that would have helped me,as it is very clear that this man is just a very crafty rogue! and he does not even have the right to fight corruption! If everybody pours into the streets both in Lagos and Abuja and bring this government to his knees, by insisting on Buhari’s impeachment , will that be a crime?a time where people are dying of hunger in Nigeria, you are packing your children like sardine to NY! God will punish Buhari to his tenth generation for this wickedness and hardness he continues to mete on Nigerians, who went all out against all odds to vote him to power! I hardly make pronouncements ! the anger in my Spirit right now is because I support the masses and God word says anyone that oppresses the poor will face his wrath!James2:6,James2:13 and Prov22:16!Even this Shehu Garba will join to chop inside the cane that God will use to flog Buhari and his family!Femi Adeshina has left the job for you Shehu Garba and Nigerians in NY could not even protest sef na wa!

These brats are having a feel of their lifetime while Kanu is languishing in prison, Nigeria is in recession, $ is now 430, Ordinary-citizens could not afford neither kerosine nor pms. Rice is now 19,000 per bag. Pupils are being withdrawn from schools as a result of funding, no electricity, EFCC trying to recover stolen funds. Buhari couldn’t afford presidential ticket about 15 month ago after-which Buhari traveled to about 25 countries, his 3 wards graduated from a foreign university & Aisha was spotted with crocodile skin Hermes Birkin costing between $50,000 and $300,000. President’s children have now become automatic delegates to UNGA & other foreign govt functions. This is real CHANGE!
