“My vlog is not for everyone” – Toke Makinwa tells Critics

Toke Makinwa

Toke Makinwa‘s weekly vlog called “Toke Moments” has quite the fan base but at the same time, it’s not everyone that gets her type of humor or the message she tries to pass across.

In a recent episode she advised people to live their lives to the fullest in their 20s – get a tattoo, have a one-night stand, party hard etc – and not everyone agreed with her.

In a series of tweets she has addressed those that had something to say about that episode.

See her tweets below!

Lmao! @mummy G.O….Pls let’s not bring in Daddy Adeboye. Toke stole his line; He’s message is really not for everyone!

As for Toke, do you actually practice what you preach or you just feel like being relevant in the media? Who exactly are you advising if I may ask? Do you envision yourself as a role model to the younger generation? Seriously? Have a one night stand? Get a tattoo? When you give birth, Is that what you’ll teach your lil daughter as she grows up? My friend go sit your sorry ass somewhere cold and quench that negative energy.

Could you just leave Toke alone??? If you enjoy her vlogs keep watching and if not, go find something you enjoy for pete’s sake. Who the hell are you to question her role model status? Who made you internet police? I hear Lady Gaga thinks along the same line of what Toke said. Oya Die na!!!! Look who’s talking of negative energy.

Very reckless tweets coming from someone who has gone through what she has. I am definitely part of those that don’t get it. Yeah I’ll never get why a grown woman would advise twenty-somethings to have one night stands all in the name of living life to the fullest. I’m not holier than thou I guess this just comes from me being more future-centered than the next person. Dear young ladies if you want to have one night stands everyday or every other day, by all means do so. If you don’t, please don’t let the noise of the over-adventorous doing their extra extra drown your state of zen or bliss or whatever lane you are on. Thanks for reading my epistle and if you would like to establish a round-table below my comment by all means have some tea ☕

She just meant live a little. That we shouldn’t take life so seriously when young. I don’t know why people like picking on this woman. Why is it cool to hate her like she’s not a human being with feelings or something

My dear but you just said exactly the same thing Toke said na. She didn’t ask everyone to go have one night stands. She basically said “do you”. Isn’t that the same thing you said up there or am I missing something?

I wonder o. Daddy G.O.’s message too is not for everybody too. Gbam
Everyone is entitled to their own views and have a right to give advise as they wish. it is YOUR CHOICE to heed it or not. What’s wrong with one night stands??? Una mama, papa, pastor, reverend, venerable, aunty, uncle, principal or even teacher sef no tell u no sex before marriage? And people still fornicate…. either you take it or leave it, 3 gbosas

Toke, I am a lady who once watched your vlogs religiously but FORTUNATELY for me I saw the light.. A wise person observes the lifestyle of whomever they are recieving advise from.. young ladies should seek to live a responsible life.. not wasting their youth on reckless living like you advise them too. There is more to life than excessive makeup, party hopping & material things.
Ms. Makinwa, please stop leading young girls astray!

Toke I hope u read THIS its ok to admit when u ‘re wrong. DON’T be unnecessarily defensive what u put out there was so wrong,a lot of people are naive, they make decisions based on what their so called Role models or Celebrities do and say. U don’t want to be the one encouraging someone else to do the wrong things. Why can’t u encourage them to be the next Zuckerberg or the next Tara Durotoye by working hard and being focused from a young age!! Let me tell u some people have not recovered for th wrong decisions they made at an early age, I can tell u categorically and I m sur u know some people that have destroyed themselves bcos of wrong decisions and peer pressure. Soo pls think deeply before u put anything out there, for your so caled followers. Thanks and God bless.

Young ladies should use their brain at all time it is not all what’s she says that is
proper, ladies need to listen and rethink before they act.

As a media personality both online and on air, you should be careful what u put out. Social media and online content was almost banned cause of things like this! Its not like people won’t do what dey want to do but as some1 pointed out, who died and made you kind of relationship advise. Smh!
Do you and generalise, or advise based on your experiences. Why am I even drinking tea sef, it’s not like I watch the vlog. So this message isn’t for me?

I guess Toke is gradually coming out the closet. With such myopic thoughts and misleading Vlog or whatever she calls it, I would be totally surprised if she was still married.

And you hope to be somebody’s mother (and please don’t gimme the feminist bullshit!) with silly misguided and deluded video.

I listened to you on the radio sometime ago, and I kept wondering what’s really your substance?

Just stick to your make-up and sidechick advise, nobody really takes you serious. JOKER!

This woman needs help. It seems she’s out to destroy lives with her evil advice. Have one night stands and contract diseases or even worse be physically harmed or even killed by the person. Get a tattoo and end up regretting for life. People spend money removing the one’s they have. I feel so sorry for you Tone try to get help fast.

When will women ever learn that having sexton is okay and we don’t need to be hypocritical about it ? I bet my life there are a number of commenter s here who have had one- nigjt stands yet are lambasting toke ! The men who have forced the notion that women having sex is wrong have one – night stands without the guilt all the time. As long as you are having safe sex , as toke said – do you.
You don’t have to have one- night stands bit you can and should if you want to.

I watch Toke vlog a lot but I do not practice what she preaches. I think one “fault” toke has is that she is too real in naija. Toke says it as she sees it there ain’t no pretense about her.
However it’s typical of some Nigerians to condemn n criticize almost anything. Ppl that want her kind of brand, ffg what she preaches but pls if u are searching for something more moral or godly online.. goggle is ur friend. Search for whatever u want, Google whatever u want n let another person breath. Also some ppl need to remove the log of wood in their eyes before plucking out someone’s peck of dust.

I was quite indifferent at first, because I understand that Toke Makinwa is trying to build a brand and would say just about anything to get visibility for her brand but I have switched positions because of this question: “Toke, would you advise your child or niece to have a one night stand?”

Not that there is anything wrong with it and people would still engage, despite Toke, but it’sin bad taste to advice people to have one night stands. People have gotten pregenant and contracted incurable diseases from one night stands, because they were so caught up in the moment, they couldn’t protect themselves properly. In the name of ‘one night stand.’ Toke, you suppose apologize, sha.

    • Quaker Oats

      October 12, 2016 at 2:56 pm

I liked your comment mistakenly- but people have been getting pregnant, getting diseases and generally fornicating since before Toke and will continue after her.

You will be shocked at how freaky some of the “grown-ups” you see around really are- parents and grandparents whose first kids are older than their marriage anniversaries (do the math). It was Toke who assisted them abi?

Free the girl- I am sure most people are intelligent enough to do what is in their own best interest or desire… people talking about whether she would advise her niece or daughter, did all the people in universities and offices and market places listen to what their parents said on this topic- if even that conversation was had? What’s indecent is how difficult Nigeria is for young people (scratch that- for everyone) to DREAM and go on to achieve their unlimited potentials.

Ladies and gentlemen!!! Enjoy life. I used to smh at all these photoshoots but i’ve seen the light. I recommend a photoshoot if you can afford one. I understand what toke is trying to say but i don’t agree with some of them. My 80 something year old landlord told me how we have things backwards. We work really hard and deny ourselves of some pleasures to provide for when we retire. It should be enjoy life then work when when we are older. You see all these people who have never taken a vacation too sick with health issues to take one after retirement. My own is find a balance. No point making money when you can’t enjoy it now that you have your health and strength. Tomorrow is not promised.

Toke and her vlog no be my cup of kunu… but I agree with her outlook on this. Na common sense talk be this but our people too like pretend. The way Naija and Africans as a whole dey frown at the word sex go make you think say the continent is full of blessed virgins and blessed virgins alone. How many of you wey dey holler never jam before? How many of you never touched, kissed, licked, sucked or did more with someone or something? With the way STDs dey Naija, you go dey wonder na who come dey spread this thing and who dey catch am if people no dey jam in the first place? The funny thing is the people wey dey wrinkle their nose for this matter dey do, done do or go do the thing she talk but it’s very African to chop and clean mouth as if nothing happen. We too like scream God’s name and act holy holy for public and Internet but the things wey these same phony holy people dey do for secret fit make person vomit. Abeg if her advice no suit you, no kill yourself or try to chew her out… live and let her be. See as some of you dey act righteous even while spewing venom lmao, hilarious! Abeg my people while you are busy pointing fingers, abeg make sure your toto, penis, breasts, mouth, nyash, mind and everything else dey 100% unserviced and pure. Make sure your holiness applies to every area of your lives.

As in, it’s really disgusting and sickening that more than 90% of these comments are from ladies. I didn’t even see the posts or blog until someone mention it. It’s ironical that you follow someone across all their social media platforms yet spew so much hatred and give uneducated feedback. If you do not agree with her stance, close the vlog and move the heck on. If you are worried about your child listening to Toke, then you have done a poor parental job. I think a lot of ladies share the same feeling they have for Kim Kardashian- doing “nothing” and earning so much. I won’t even say i’m a fan of Toke but i respect her hustle. Whatever works for you, do you. We really need to learn to stop hating. And besides, it’s already a common knowledge that the real Christians are not loud and do not go about condemning. Live and let live pls. Toke has come to stay and so as her hustle. The hatred is real but her follower-ship keeps increasing daily. That’s the kind of success everyone prays for. May your enemies and haters be your most ardent followers.

    Dear Toke,
Nothing wrong with telling people to “relax or have fun”, but then words are very powerful.
I’ve watched and enjoyed some of your vlog. One can use a platform to encourage, enlighten and entertain and still be very careful of their choice of words. Your words speaks more than even actions and there are a reflection of who you are! ( like Trump). Careless talk can be damaging, you never know who you will become tomorrow. But then, it’s your choice

Madam Toke, I am 20 year old and last night, I did not get any sleep. No, I wasn’t having a one-night stand, I was working hard at my craft. We live in denial, we Nigerians. Do you know the statistics of poverty rate in Nigeria? Do you know the statistics of death rate in Africa no thanks to malaria? Mbanu. What you needed to have told the youths was to work hard to realize their dreams, to emulate the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, Barrack Obama etc but you preferred to spew out bullshit instead. I am sad, because your goddamned advice will destroy thousands of lives, majority being those non-the-wiser who look up to you as their role model. I am so sad, I wish I were coherent enough to tell you so many things.

I hear you’re a Christian, what do you make of Ecclesiastes 11:9-10? Since you have nothing better to say, keep your Satanic advice to yourself, you shameful shameful woman!

Hello all, I do not believe that this is about “hating” Toke. I sincerely believe part of loving and encouraging someone is letting them know where they have got it wrong. She has here, period. We want our young ladies to be decent….how do having one night stands, getting tattooed and pierced fit into this? Not to talk of binge drinking and partying from sunday to sunday in your 20s kwa?!! And pls, the fact that so many people are doing it in their closets still doesn’t make it right. Once on her vlog, she talked about “not giving him any chocolate if he didn’t drop money for the niceties of life e.g vacations abroad, money for hair, a ride etc”! Is that what a relationship is all about. Is your body a tool for getting the so called niceties of life? Priorities here people. But I love Toke. She’s still God’s daughter deserving of our love and prayers. My two cents.
