Two Brothers Who Taught Themselves Animation Open Ethiopia’s First Animation Studio | WATCH

Ethiopia’ s first animation institute has opened in Addis Ababa. It’s driven by the passion of two brothers, Nestant Mariam and Philemon Mariam, who taught themselves animation 10 years ago.

When they first started implementing their passion in cartoon production the brothers say they took 2 years to produce a one and a half hour cartoon film.

However now they say they have learnt so much and they can produce a film in just two months.

In 2005, they released their first animated film in Amharic. Called ‘Washao’ – which means ‘The Cave’. It tells the story of Ethiopia’s victory against the Italian invasion in 1896.

I especially like how you’ve singled out Nigeria and at the same time remove yourself from the situation as if you’re not Nigerian?

      Madam what have you built/done?

      Well since you asked
      1. Got my associate’s degree
      2. About to get my bachelor’s degree next May
      3. Got an actuarial internship with a large consulting firm this past summer
      4. Passed my first actuarial exam on the first try
      5. Studying for second exam
      6. Got a full time position from that first internship
      7. Got another internship for next summer
      8. Still getting scouted by companies, all expense-paid out-of-state interviews
      9. And supporting my family back home

Whatever one does, must be done well. Now go have several seats

I’m so jealous. I want one in Ekiti, like now. I want our people to do cool stuff; to leverage on the fact that very powerful software is practically free, while the stories we can tell and the youth, drive, and creativity to tell these stories are so numerous as to be almost silly.
We have wealth. We should be cooler than Disney.

@tunmi Nigeria has many awesome stories in animation and multimedia production o, from Yaba to the Island. young people doing great stuff.

    Very simple things to do:
create a contest e.g. animated short film from a Bible story, multimedia versions of school lessons…
include a game/app category at the film/movie awards.
(a bit harder) create a ccHub at every university town.
