Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the blame game and focus on what he was elected to do.

Obasanjo said this while delivering a keynote at the 1st Akintola Williams Annual Lecture.

He lashed at the Buhari administration for repeatedly lumping the country’s three previous administrations together and then accusing them of misgovernance.

“The blanket adverse comments or castigation of all democratic administrations from 1999 by the present administration is uncharitable, fussy and uninstructive.

Politics apart, I strongly believe that there is a distinction between the three previous administrations that it would be unfair to lump them all together. I understand President Buhari’s frustration on the state of the economy inherited by him. It was the same reason and situation that brought about the cry for change, otherwise, there would be no need for change if it was all nice and rosy.

No administration can or should be comfortable with the excruciating pain of debilitating and crushing economy. Businesses are closing, jobs are being lost and people are suffering.

I know that President Buhari has always expressed concern for the plight of the common people but that concern must be translated to workable and result-oriented socio-economic policy and programme that will turn the economy around at the shortest time possible.

We cannot continue to do the same thing and expect things to change

Now that we have had change because the actors and the situation needed to be changed, let us move forward to have progress through a comprehensive economic policy and programme that is intellectually, strategically and philosophically based.

It is easier to win an election than to right the wrongs of a badly fouled situation. When you are outside, what you see and know are nothing compared with the reality.

And yet once you are on seat, you have to clear the mess and put the nation on the path of rectitude, development and progress leaving no group or section out of your plan, programme and policy and efforts. The longer it takes, the more intractable the problem may become,” Obasanjo said.

Obasanjo also criticised plans by Buhari to take about $30billion loan to fix critical administration.

“I am sure that such a comprehensive policy and programme (that will move Nigeria forward) will not support borrowing $30 billion in less than three years. It will give us the short-, medium- and long-term picture.

Adhocry is not the answer but cold, hard headed planning that evinces confidence and trust is the answer. Economy neither obeys orders nor does it work according to wishes. It must be worked upon with all factors considered and most stakeholders involved.

The investors, domestic and foreign, are no fools and they know what is going on with the management of the economy including the foreign exchange and they are not amused. The Central Bank must be restored to its independence and integrity. We must be careful and watchful of the danger of shortermism.

Short-term may be the enemy of medium- and long-term. We must also make allowance for the lessons that most of us in democratic dispensation have learned and which the present administration seems to be just learning,” he said.

The only recommended suggestion I have heard from OB since 1960, OB is now feeling the recesssion as if he has not blamed past administration, since he is now included with the bad economy, he is now talking. You guys should better fix it.

Exactly what I have been saying. This blame game is a sign of gross irresponsibility. Fix things. The country must move forward. You were voted in to make changes not live in Jonathan’s administration.

eziokwu? obasanjo is a hypocrite. why should buhari be the only one to clear the mess, all the past leaders have a hand in the destruction of this country, especially the “old soldiers”, if they had built this country to be great, we wouldn’t be the shithole that we are now.

      @ Osa…So Obasanjo is now a saint?
This is exactly what is wrong with Nigeria! We forget easily.
You even brought tribalism into it.
What political / government position did Chinua Achebe hold and mismanage in Nigeria?
Why compare him with Obasanjo? My dear go back in history and refresh your mind
      .
All the millItaly ” autocratic” rulers helped in a big way to ruin Nigeria, knowing or unknowingly through poor management.
.Obasanjo and Buhari are part of that legacy!
      Call a spade, a spade! !!!!

Aunty nene it seems in igbo politics (PLS FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME) you people don’t understand the concept of me supporting you does not mean i will not criticize any action you do cause i have observed once yorubas back off somebody igbos will start shouting hypocrites & back stabbers,

Please let me ring into your ears that a majority of sw voted for buhari does not mean we will keep quiet and support him when things are going wrong the same way you people followed GEJ in the face on unprecedented corruption.
IN 2011 we supported GEJ and seeing the rot he put down we backed off and took a risk with Buhari who is following the same steps and we are backing off ITS CALLED POLITICKING AND NOT BACK STABBING GET THAT INTO YOUR HEADS!

Switching support when things are heading down is not corruption and I dear say it they no born Buhari or Sultan well may EFCC carry Baba Obj. His administration will come to a swift end.

Actually @Osa and @lolarae, you both are guilty of the bigotry you accuse Nene of.
There was nothing in her comment that suggests a bigoted stance (common, read it again, this time without bigotry clouding your understanding) but you jumped on her comment all because she started with an Igbo word.
Both of you should think deeply about where your anger is coming from because it is not from Nene’s comment up there….

BTW, Obasanjo is right about cleaning the mess.

Also pls dont forget it was AGUNYI IRONSI that plunged this country into a mess in the first place and Azikwe was the one that even wanted the country called Nigeria in the first place.

    • Facts only

      November 24, 2016 at 8:10 am

      @Osa and lolarae,
It baffles me how some of you see Yoruba/Igbo battle in every comment. I read Nene’s comment again to see what could have motivated you to make your comments, and all I feel for you guys is pity. You need help.
Lolare, I don’t know the history book that told Aguiyi Ironsi plunged Nigeria into this mess. Return the book and ask for a refund. There was an Nzegwu-led coup d’etat on 15th January 1966. Ironsi knew nothing about the coup, from planning to execution. The Prime Minister (Balewa) was killed but the coup failed. There was chaos verging on anarchy. Ironsi, being the highest ranking military officer took over power; that was inevitable. He formed a Unitary System of government, to unify the country because of the bad blood and division created by the failed coup. Less than seven months later (29/7/66) Ironsi was killed in a counter coup, said to be executed by T.Y Danjuma and others. So, how did Ironsi plunge Nigeria into any mess?
These facts are known to many kids in secondary schools in Nigeria. If you’re not sure don’t make a comment, please. Some of us don’t know or must have forgotten, and might believe the falsehood you typed. That’s dangerous.

Guess what? These murky fellows tot they were referring to nene+. Read their ruckus and notice how they typed dust.! hhmmmmm. They failed to realize this nene is pro Buhari but cos they are on auto hate they must disperse their negativity.

Back to OBJ, I am not applauding your comment. Is history such a difficult thing to remember? How well did Buhari perform in his youth in 1984?

Notice he tried to absolve his 8 years out of the 16 years. come ‘on Baba don’t be petty! I support PDP and I can tell that the worst of OBJ or PDP is better than the best of Buhari at the federal level so far. KPI abound. NPA is in ghost mode, industries are shut down, companies are locked, hotel furniture consumed by rats, tourism is deserted, small businesses closes daily, nothing is working .
Buhari is a failure who blames his tools, people but himself.

      The duo Osa &co awful.

    November 24, 2016 at 9:09 am

Osa and lolarae, did you see Nene in your dream? she didn’t say anything for you to call her and her tribe out. PMB is not igbo, she just said Buhari shouldn’t be the only one to clear the mess of the old soldiers. Please read her comment again before you begin this Igbo-Yoruba thingy. Can we stop fanning the flames of tribalism, it’s killing this country.

You watched in silence as the president appointed his unqualified party members relatives to handle very key component of our economy, PDP spoke you shun and now you blame them? Haba you dey go church?

  15. Why????

    November 24, 2016 at 11:44 am

@Osa and Lolarae….why did you both refuse to read what @nene wrote thoroughly before wrongly judging her?
Why did you accuse an innocent person of what she did not do?And she was even supporting PMB. Abi PMB don turn to omo ibo ni??? OMG,this is just too much!!!
You both are filled with anger for her tribe and yet you call her out for doing that! Her statement did not in any way say anything about tribe. How your brains work disappoint me!
I read these comments over and over again and I kept asking myself ‘WHY’?
And Lolarae still went ahead to post another comment, this time, saying something that happened long time ago? Haaa…You all need to stop this tribal BS or else, stagnancy will live in your hearts and lives!
Lets move on! I love Nigeria!I’m Nigerian.I’m not from SW,SE,SS etc

OBJ please gerrarahere! You all stupidly worked and foisted this inept person on us. What drove you all to do it? The best interest of Nigeria? Monkeys, you all, if you think you can sell us that story. You all, including the dullards here stoking ethnic embers all sang Buhari to the throne because of ethnic considerations. Period!
You can’t re-write history on us, We will never allow it so all of bugger off please. Enjoy what you brought upon Nigeria and some of us will have one consolation, the demystifying of your fraud of a savior-king. Have you seen the WhatsApp trending piece – Why I am Happy Buhari is President? Go see it, it is so appropriate because some of you would have been delusional to the grave on the man-god you created in your minds if the gods did not help to uncloak him. Very Poor poor judgments…no wonder Nigeria is the mess it is today if you all (including your leadres like OBJ) portray such poor judgment in you affairs.
