“We will not accept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do” – Sultan of Sokoto Wants Senate to Reject Gender Equality Bill

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III

Speaking at the 20th Zamfara State Annual Qur’anic Recitation Competition, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar lll, called on the Senate to Reject the Gender Equality Bill before it, TheCable reports.

“Our religion is our total way of life; therefore, we will not accept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do. Islam is a peaceful religion; we have been living peacefully with Christians and followers of other religions in this country. Therefore, we should be allowed to perform our religion effectively,” the Sultan said.

The bill is proposing that widows should have custody of their children except it is against the welfare and interests of the children.

It is also seeking equal rights for male and female children in the sharing of inherited family wealth and properties

It also says a widow should have the right to remarry any man of her choice and should have the right to a fair share in the inheritance of her late husband’s property, and the right to live in her matrimonial home.

The Senate rejected the Bill after second reading in March this year, but it has been reintroduced and has passed second reading. It was sponsored by Senator Biodun Christine Olujimi from Ekiti South Senatorial District.

Very unguarded statement from the so called religious leader. You are part of the problem we are facing in Nigeria. Are we now a Muslim country? With all the havoc Buhari and your Boko Haram Children are causing, you are still interested in sharing properties and rightsee of a widow. Please stay in Sokoto and keep teaching religious tolerance, thank you sir

You bitter people that think Islam is a religion of war and bloodshed better get your facts right. No religion encourages violence even Buddhism. None of them.

You said boko haram .tell me who are the most people affected by book haram if not the northeners abi when they want to put the bomb they tell Christians to come to left and Muslims to right. Please think well before you judege.

The sultan doesn’t want to temper with our holy book because it has been a law before his existence and aside that are we the only country with Muslims? Other countries have muslims and are living in peace with no alteration of their holy laws.

Tolerance is very important in life. Even animals know tolerance. We can’t tolerate lgbt because our holy book sees it wrong. If you can temper with your holy book, we can’t. To each his own.

Let’s learn to live in peace and harmony. Stop pretending like muslims are wicked people. We have wicked christains ,wicked Hindus, wicked atheists ,wicked catholics likewise good ones. The world is a balanced world. Deal with it.

Tolerance you say……….. Islam and the word tolerance shouldn’t be in the same sentence. I am yet to see a religion that dat is not tolerable of people and their own beliefs. Hell in some countries you can be lynched for not wearing a hijab or you go out without ur husband and you are beheaded. Some don’t even want to know d ladies religion before passing just judgement.

If people can understand what the Bible said about Muslims then they won’t blame them when they war against Christians. God gave Ishmael( who happens to be the Allah they worship today) Muslims as his inheritance and told him he would always be at loggerheads with his brother Isaac. So please pardon the them people, this is a declaration that was made by the Almighty God long before our ancestors got here.

Good!! Gender equality violates the right of men.Patriarchy will lead to a productive and successful society.Gender equality breeds weakness in men. It’s difficult to get this argument across to people without being instantly shoehorned evil or misogynistic. These feminists are trying to take away our patriarchal society which was given to us by God.Gynocentrism is just a manifestation of the west’s obsession to Equality.Equality itself is irrational beyond simply equality before the law.Patriarchy is balance and is given men the power/authority in society as compensation for our increased responsibility within society

.Feminism is an impossible paradox. Its existence proves its failure. If men and women were naturally equal as disgruntled feminists claim, why does any need “Feminism”? History would show a blend of societies and accomplishments championed by both men and women but it doesn’t..Women have had the thousands of years to prove their equal contribution to civilization and it’s no where to be found. Thus, feminism exist as a compensate. To demand something that women can create themselves. These disgruntled feminists don’t advocate for equality in the literal sense.

I like Muslim patriarchy where woman is your property,if she tries to nag or manipulate you,you can discipline her and if she cheats on you. It’s death sentence.

Moral of the story; Feminism need to be declared as a mental illness and it’s a serious mental illness of self hate being projected upon others by the ineffectual impotent self hating denying misandrists. that want want all men’s stuff without having any effort into making or earning it,while hating men of their patriarchal right and accomplishments ,blaming men for all troubles created by them. No, there cannot be equality. This is a man’s world and it always is.

The Sultan stating that his religion is the “total way of life” of all his subjects alienates subjects who do not practice his religion. He also fails to understand that his caliphate does not cover the broad expanse of Nigeria, so his statement holds no weight in Nigeria’s political discourse- in just the same way that the Oba of Lagos’ religious views should not hold any weight in political discourse, for instance- but should only matter in social engagements. Only ‘culture’ should be the way of life of a group of people, not religion.

Thanks to Senator Olujimi for proposing this bill. However, I think that the wording of some of its proposals need to be adjusted to suit both the widow and the widower. As it stands from what I’ve read, it seems as though the rights of women are being considered at the expense of men, and thus is not inclusive of both genders.

    • missnk

      December 28, 2016 at 7:59 pm

It is not inclusive of both genders because we know Nigeria is a patriarchal society. Have you ever heard of a man who is widowed needing permission to marry a woman of his choice?

..And if I don’t believe in your Allah??
Nigeria need to separate the Nigerian state and religion to avoid all these confusion. Otherwise divide the country into regions and let each region have their Constitution, with the president as the ceremonial head.
There’s too much conflict with the way we are.
Let each region rule themselves according to their faith
    and culture !
    We need progress.

    • 'Deola

      December 28, 2016 at 2:19 pm

It would be hard to separate religion and the state when subscribers to a particular religion say their religion is their “total way of life.” It is the crux of the matter, and at the heart of the other’s outrage and this where the seeming complexity arises – the differing worldviews should offer a pause for reflection and not deflection.

If it is “total, “that is final, then it can’t be changed. It is God’s order delivered vide the Quran.

Sadly, your existence is proof that women have equally contributed to the civilisation of mankind.

If God/Allah is going to judge everyone equally at the judgement doesn’t it mean that we are all equal. But no you people will come here and be forming we are the chosen ones.

Please look at Western societies and look at our society or most “islamic” societies (Nigeria is not an Islamic nation) if you were to convince an atheist that God exists, who do you think he/she will believe are Gods people.

And some muslims of nowadays sef. Read your Quran and stop letting this people fool you. See what the early muslims did to benefit civilisation (algebra, mathematics, medicine) and you people have allowed them to turn the face of your religion to gender inequality and terrorism. Didn’t we decide that we were equal in the 20th century. Please just get out.

I’m so glad they reintroduced the bill. And the provisions are really important oh.
      – custody to the widow except when against the welfare and interest of the children. The children are put first.
      – equal rights for men and women in sharing inherited wealth and properties. Imagine, women can be denied their inheritance simply because they are women.
      – the right for a widow to marry who she wants (fine a man she wants), the right to a fair share of her spouse’s inheritance, and the right to live in her matrimonial home. It’s sad that they don’t have these rights to begin with.

Islam is everything but peace. Actually, it is pieces. But the true solution is education. The average northerner isn’t educated to be enlightened. So we fight all we want, when the time comes, the chamber has more male than female. Saraki will just ask… If you want equality, say ‘I’.(you know how the noise will be). And if you want the status quo to remain the same, then you will known the rogues we elected into such offices. We are not going anywhere fast cause this thing called Nigeria isn’t ready.

Is Nigeria a circular state, Islamic or Christian? If it’s a circular state then the laws of the state surpasses the Quran and the Bible and damn what any sultan says. The impudence…..admitting that you thrive on the subjugation of the female race and actually has the nerves to blame God for it. The injustices we commit in the name of God…

      Good comment.

However, circular? Looking at that word, one should be able to tell it’s from circle. Then there’s circular (n) which means a notice/letter for distribution.

The word you want is secular. Smiles and runs off…

We are so different from these people. It is pathetic trying to prove otherwise, that we can ever have a country united and progressive with these people. We are just wasting precious time trying to panel beat a united country where non exists.
While not an advocate of complete severance for different regions, we are all in ruinous denial if we don’t see the need to advocate a confederacy at least, as the minimum political system to help address the gulf-like differences between us and these people.

and this is why we are where we are in Africa. These idiots don’t understand that when you subjugate half of your entire population (that is women) and keep them from reaching their full potential you are denying your own progress. Newsflash to the men who are so scared of gender equality- when women are free to work just as you do, have access to property etc it takes the pressure off you as a man to be the sole provider. no wonder many of these men die young striving so hard to live up to archaic standards of what it means to be a ‘man’.

    • EE

      December 29, 2016 at 1:53 am

I see our point and I counter with Japan, 18th century Britain and 19th century America. Gender equality does not equal economic growth, an increase in the workforce productivity does, which with automation can be achieved by other means.

Further even in liberated Sweden, men have a much lower life expectancy rate. Men tend to die younger, its simply genetic, nothing to do with gender equality. Equality on the face of it is also a myth.

So yeah, gender equality is to be frank a social construct, just a step above animal rights.

Long-Short: Africa’s problems have more to do with a lack of industry than gender equality.

Once something is declared “unIslamic” in Nigeria it is dead on arrival.
That said, it is obvious that the Sultan is playing the usual politics of Northern leaders.
Once anything that will bring progress is coming they will claim it is against the religion because they benefit a lot from an impoverished population.
The sad part is, their own child aren’t held back by these restrictions.
Their daughters will attend the best schools, read up to PhD level if they want, marry the sons of equally wealthy and powerful people, while the daughters of the poor are married off to old men before they turn 14.
These leaders continue to use religion to brainwash and hold back the masses to secure wealth and power for their offspring.

I don’t know why religion in Nigeria is one kind.
The UAE is a muslim country that takes gender parity seriously & it’s not just lip service.
We’ve seen women there, some as young as 22 given cabinet positions among other leadership opportunities.
    Why is our own different?

All over the world people are realizing that no society can make meaningful progress if one half of the population is held back by stupid, stoneage beliefs that consider them inferior, but over here we gleefully hug backwardness in the name of “values” and “beliefs”.

I still don’t understand why these traditional rulers have so much influence on Nigerian society…what good do they do?
