In the concluding episode of Wana Udobang‘s enlightening series Warriors, Timi Edwin discusses growing up with sickle cell with a severe honesty that stuns as much as it educates.

While we are sad that the series has come to an end, we are nonetheless thankful that it came into our lives, showing us what it means to live with the disease. Watch episodes one, two, and three here, here, and here.

In this episode, Timi Edwin discusses her worst crises, the emotional and financial toll the disease takes on a life and the pain.

She also has advice for parents bringing up children with sickle cell, saying, “Raise this child like she’s a normal human being.”

Warriors was one amazing series. WanaWana is so creative. We met at the 2010 Farafina Creative Writing Workshop and remained friends ever since. I’m glad she’s finding new avenues to share her stories with the world. She taught me not to restrict myself to one storytelling technique. I’m happy for her.

You should be never register a child in school without informing the school of any medical condition the child has especially something like Sickle Cell. You should never start a relationship without telling the person you live with sickle cell. I know the pressure to hide is there (for most of us) but being open upfront helps.

One thing my mum always told me was never hide your condition. And that is what has helped me till date. I’m very open about my condition and struggles

    Well-done Timi. You’re doing a great job
