"I don't think men and women are equal.... at home the man is the head" - Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage

Speaking on the Midday show on The Beat 99.9FM with OAP Toolz, superstar singer Tiwa Savage, speaking on gender discrimination in the society, she said:

It’s real. I’m not going to say I’m completely comfortable with it but it is what it is. You have to deal with it. If it means you have to work 10 times harder than your male counterparts, don’t complain about it, do what you have to do. We all celebrate people like Oprah and Mo Abudu and we don’t actually realise what they have to do to get to that point. They probably had to do 20 times than their male counterparts. Once you get there, you don’t complain about how you get there. So, whatever it is you have to do as a female, you just have to get it done.

I know I’ll (ruffle) a few feathers but I also don’t think men and women are equal, I don’t think that’s how God created us that way… especially in the household anyway. So I think as females when we realise that yeah we can be strong in our career, but when we are home we have to realise that the man is the head of the house.

She also said that she and Tee Billz “are doing what they are doing privately and it should remain private” as a response to Toolz’s question on whether they are back together.

She said the day she’ll never forget was the day she had her son after a 22-hour labour, adding that she has a lot of scars on her body to remind her.

She said she’s embracing her stretch marks, adding that if she were not in the entertainment industry, she wouldn’t have tried to lose weight. She said she has a pouch and she isn’t going to do surgery to get rid of it.

She added that she has plans for her stretch marks, which is to paint them in different colours.

She lamented that women are being seen as wrong when issues arise in relationships whether they are right or wrong.

See the other things she said as penned by Toolz:

  • She came to the interview with no entourage, she even did her own make-up herself, before arriving; cutting costs.
  • She does not have any extra cast doing her make-up and all. When the camera goes off, it’s just her and her son. No extras around…
  • She is working on a song with Coldplay and he was very interested in African dances
  • The structure of the industry abroad is different, she can record a song and it’s out the next day, on the internet, in Africa. But in the international market, it could take up to a year or two for the song to get out
  • She doesn’t want her son to feel pressured to do music because that’s what she’s doing and he’s a little shy. If he’s dancing and he catches you watching him, he’d stop.
  • She’d love for her son to be a ball player (basketball or soccer), so he can buy her a retirement home…
  • Her most embarrassing day is the first day she had to perform at an event in Eko Hotel and her back zip broke and exposed her back/behind.
  • If she were a guy, she would get away with a lot more. If she were a male artist, she wouldn’t have as much flack

I wish people would read on gender equality before talking about it. It is not women trying to be men, it is not women claiming superiority against men, it is not women trying to ‘upsurp’ men. Gender Equality is about VALUE IN DIVERSITY! No one is saying men and women are interchangeable. We are saying that even though we do different things, we are equally as important. How is it that people cannot comprehend something so simple?
    Leadership is all about ability.
If a woman is by nature more decisive and more intelligent than her man, what automatically makes a man a leader?
    A dick?
    Pfft!
Marriage is a 50-50 venture. Where two people who love each other are coming together in a union of souls. You are building a life TOGETHER and there’s no such thing as a hierarchy. Therefore if hubs can cook well and wifey likes to clean, hubs cooks and wifey cleans. If wifey is a stay at home mom and hubs brings home the bacon, you as wifey need to be happy doing the chores. At the end of the day, each party does what they can to make it work. Because you are a partnership!
So in a scenario where the woman knows very well that her man’s choices are leading them into trouble, she is to sit back and watch him ruin them just because he has a dick and she doesn’t?
Geez Tiwa! No wonder you had to look for N45million

Jide you’re the silly one. If as old as you are, you can’t decipher that if the man is absent or unable or dies the woman takes over . Feeling cool about your comment when you just typed something very foolish. Some of you can’t drop a comment without throwing immature jabs. So the only thing that qualifies a man to take leadership is the thing between his legs? What if the man is more comfortable with his woman taking the lead? Or is this not possible? Nigerians will say she has jazzed him.

  7. Angela

    October 5, 2017 at 12:06 am

Only a halfwit would care about what an entertainer has to say, especially when there are Nigerians. IQ is never quite their strongest suite . If Leonardo DiCarprio can travel on his private jet to India, a third world country where over 300million population have no electricity, to warn them about the dangers of global warming what can you except from TIwa Savage? Entertainers are meant for one thing and one thing only; entertainment. Take them serious at your own peril.

Be very careful in choosing your partner . God has given us free will to choose do not ignore the signs! A man is meant to lead a home so if you choose wrong it’s serious “gbege”. How can I submit to a man that has no direction or identity? How can I submit to a man who is living his life for instagram likes or snap chat views? How can I submit to a man who has no vision? God forbid bad thing! Not to ruffle my feathers but with my dreams and goals I will not be able to submit to a Visionless man. Your purpose should align with his purpose.A good ,purpose driven woman can be unhappy in her marriage because the she cannot submit to a directionless,Visionless man.. The truth is if a blind man leads, you can never trust his decisions. As for the men you can’t lead a woman who has different priorities from you she will never allow you to lead her. So choose carefully.

GOD Bless you. Been hearing some horrible things about the woman lately and its really sad what we celebrate as nigerians. How she has even managed to keep a company afloat…story for another day. Her employees have it the worst. My cousin recently left the company and after he told me what really goes down…unbelievable.

Shebi she said home? Let everyone arrange their home how they want to. Moreover, as long as you choose the right partner, there shouldn’t be a problem with this setup really.

More importantly, Nigerian celebs need to understand and learn how to navigate such hot-button topics… especially people like Tiwa, given her backstory (or ongoing story sef).

We are EQUAL . All humans are. Perhaps she meant to say we play different ROLES. If we undrstood what God meant by HEAD we wont be too quick to fight for that role..it means HEAD OF SERVICE…..Man, you are to be ahead when it comes to being SELFLESS…You are to be a Godly EXAMPLE…..the very human representation of God in your home…..that means Fatherly, friendly, FORGIVING.

Interesting how some of these women come back to somewhat backtrack and form submissive after they have opened their nyash on media/ social media (side eye Tiwa and Monalisa).

Notice how some older women with longer lasting and hopefully non-toxic relationship (because really who knows) like Liz Benson, Joke Silva etc do not come to reaffirm their submissiveness to the world. You either got it or you dont. The only ones that need to know if you are a good wife or not are (in that order) a) Your God b) Your spouse and c) your children (as a role model).

PS- media (social and traditional) has a long memory so make you all remember that

      October 6, 2017 at 12:27 pm

      Linda,
I disagree. We all have our purpose and assignments God has given us OUTSIDE of marriage. Marriage is the number one mystery (if you are married) yes…but it is not the ONLY ministry.
Whether or not Tiwa is in her God given purpose as a singer…i will reserve my OPINION on that.
But for the woman who is Busy and has to travel to different places …i will say this..COOKING AND CLEANING does not equate to KEEPING A HOME. That is called KEEPING A HOUSE. Keeping a HOME is more to do with the SPIRIT of your PRESENCE..which can also be felt in your ABSENCE.

That a woman is busy and has responsibilities outside of her HOUSE is no excuse for a HUSBAND to cheat. Be a MAN. Carry whatever is too heavy for your wife to lift ON HER OWN ( Literally and metaphorically)

You see my problem with the new generation of women.Honestly, this generation of women are becoming stubborn, bossy, uncontrollable and unsubmissive to us..I have been saying this that modern women want be men now..You see what western culture has done and still doing to our culture as Africans. The western culture has contaminated the traditional values of Africa. What’s wrong with us as Africans??It’s a huge shame that western culture and European mode of civilization is thriving and outgrowing our African cultural heritage. So, western culture is now regarded as front line civilization???? So, our African ways of doing things has now become primitive, archaic and regrettably unacceptable in public domain??? Have we lost our sense of our cultural continuity and traditional African values?

You women should stop throwing away our culture in the name of modernity. We were all raised to believe that Men are the absolute power and authority in the household. It seems today that women are yelling in the streets, social media and public forums for more rights, women are demanding to take away our rights as men.Women are nurturers and men are the head,if men and women move from the roles that God has placed them in then we will end up with a society that is chaotic. There’s a reason why men are the head of the family because that’s how nature set it up.Imagine what would happen when we walk if both legs decided to go forward at the same time?? Clearly there would be no movement..

Patriarchy are even laid out in the bible, and it exists because of evolution and not created by society.Traditionally and biblical men are the head and women are asked to be submissive to us men.Smashing patriarchy means destroying civilization.Africa is traditional and patriarchal society has pride in our culture.I noticed that abolishing our African culture and patriarchy have been fundamental goals of these modern women for years now.The fact of the matter is however that everything is actually just as it appears the man is the head just as it seems. That patriarchy works proven true by experience and experiment which reigned undisputed for thousands of years…period.

    • Molly

      October 5, 2017 at 12:38 pm

If you had treated us right when you had absolute power, do you think we would have rebelled? If God wanted women to be slaves to men, he wouldn’t have made some women smarter than some men. He wouldn’t have us talents, gifts and wisdom if he wanted us to be the mindless robots you wish we were.
I don’t even know why I’m bothering to reply you. Someone once commented that you and John were the same person and you’d been employed by Bellanaija to aggravate commenters and I think it’s true. So enjoy your paycheck…which comes from a woman….who is your boss! LOL, bet that eats away at your depraved soul!

      October 5, 2017 at 4:31 pm

Do women understand why they can have equal rights with men? Because there are men keeping the wolves and marauders at bay. Some of this gender roles did not come out of thin air, they manifested out of what nature requires of both genders. No amount of feminism can change this.

  24. oby

    October 5, 2017 at 12:32 pm

Gender equality issues as a family unit is way different from gender equality issues in the society or community at large, both shouldn’t be mixed up. As always, a man is the head of the family! Deal with it! What I would have loved her to talk about is the gender issues that affects us in the society level.

Any Christian woman on this blog that doesn’t believe the husband is the head of the family needs to go and read her Bible again. The man is not the head of any woman, but his own family. A single woman is not considered headless because she’s not married. “Head” in the family means Leader. Every organization needs a leader. Both men and women are created equal before God, in fact in marriage God sees them as one, no distinction. The only thing is that God holds the man accountable for the family. That’s why when Adam and Eve fell, God didn’t go ask Eve what happened HE held Adam accountable. Head in the family doesn’t mean tyrant it means Servant-Leader. The Bible commands men to love their wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. Do you know what that means? You should be able to lay down your life for your wife. And as a woman all you have to do is follow (submit/yield) to that leadership. Trust me if you marry a man that lives by the precepts of the Word of God, and you are also submitted to God… this shouldn’t be hard…

      October 5, 2017 at 5:04 pm

Self deception is the order of the day. I am a year older than my husband. I still submit to him and allow him lead our family. I give my opinion whether he seeks it or not ,most times he does. We take every major decision together. He supports my work,I support his. We’re friends and partners and lovers. That’s how marriage works. Its different if your partner is a never do well but generally, it is what it is. You wait for him to propose to you and pay for the wedding before realizing both of you are equal at home? Ok
