Champion England Boxer faces Deportation to Nigeria after his Parents Immigrated Illegally when he was 14 - BellaNaija

Bilal Fawaz

29-year-old Bilal Fawaz faces been deported out of the UK to Nigeria from where his parents emigrated when he was just 14, Daily Mail reports.

Fawaz, who refers to himself as Kevin, was taken to the UK by his cousin who promised his father would be arriving soon.

Fawaz said he was treated “like a slave” and ran away, and after a life involving bad gangs and getting shot once and stabbed 25 times, he became a boxer.

He has since represented the UK 6 times in boxing, he is currently ranked the 3rd best middleweight in England, and was the 2012 ABA light-middleweight champion.

The Home Office rejected his application to remain in the UK, and declared his marriage to a British citizen void.

Accordng to Daily Mail, he was arrested and taken to the Tinsley House Immigration Removal Centre in Gatwick on November 29.

Fawaz says his mother is dead and he has no idea where his father is.

He also says he’s stateless, as his parents were Lebanese immigrants to Nigeria, and did not have Nigerian citizenship themselves. He said:

I have no other family to go back to, I don’t know anyone in Nigeria or anything about it – all I know is here.

Imagine how it feels to represent a country and then to have that country turn around and put you in what feels like a prison.

I’m confused… If he ‘works’ for England as a reputable boxer shouldn’t that entitle him to some kind of visa to remain there at least?

I feel for him – deportation to a country you don’t know will be an ordeal.

But something is not adding up. This man clearly has black blood. He is clearly mixed. Yet he says his parents were Lebanese. Neither his mother or father has African blood? There’s something off about his statement.

Also, why was his marriage to a British citizen declared void? Neither this post nor the one on daily Mail says why.

It’s also not clear why his mother disappeared. He claims his father was supposed to join him in the UK. But what about the mama?? Did she stay in Nigeria? Is he saying he doesn’t have a Lebanese passport even though both his parents were from there? Either his parents royally failed their son or he is withholding something.

Howany people have a passport. Most people don’t get a passport except to travel out and most people never trave out. Also f he came thru naija, what would he need a Lebanese passport for. You realize he was 14

“Fawaz came to UK from Nigeria at the age of 14”, on whose passport and where are those relatives now? “His father would be joining him later” – he never did till date. Hmm.

    Fawaz craft your story well…..

Sometimes people try too hard. Right there it says the people that brought him here treated him like a slave and Drew him into bad gangs so he ran away from them. Is it only passport that gets u into u.k?

Most people think everywhere else is like naija where the law is not respected or implimented. I read in other news outlet that he has long criminal record, as long as you have not being a good citizen your other so called good deeds will not be of any effect and negated. Its only in naija that criminality is rewarded and celebrated. The law is the law they have revoked many peoples british citizenship after they were found to be criminals so this is not out of place. Even the so called marrige may have been found to be bogus to get citizenship. The whole story is not been told. Whoever took him to UK has failed him.

Return to Nigeria and do not be afraid. You do not have to be a fugitive. Not all that glitters is gold.

@slice and mama – I don’t know why it bothers you so much that other people are using their critical thinking skills. But let me explain.

“It says there” does not make it absolutely true. For instance, he claims his mother is dead. Does he say when his mother died? No. Well, his mother could have died last year or she could have died 2 years after he went to the UK, or she could have died before he went to the UK. Each possibility changes his story. If his mother just died, then it begs the question why she let him be taken from her illegally to England. If she died before he went to the UK, then his story makes more sense.

From the two articles can you tell me which one it is? When did his mother die. Tell me , since “it says there” ?

Smh for you. I responded because I genuinely thought you missed that part of the story. I didn’t know you were looking for a debate or an indepth analysis. Sorry to disappoint you mister, I really don’t care enough about the story to be bothered. You can carry on all by yourself.
