New designers pop up everyday and quite a few of them are undoubtedly talented. We’ve had our eyes on quite a few up and coming and established brands and we will be highlighting some of the major brands you need to know in the Discover series.
BNS: Why did you start your line?
When I was deciding what career path to take I was mostly interested in drama and art, but after much deliberation decided to go the route of clothing as it seemed like a great marriage of the two and more tangibly viable. With the art and sketching of garment design and the theatrical creativity needed for the shows, I could simultaneously explore both and hoped to grow a sustainable business from it. I started the brand 23 years ago stocking one store based in Durban which was called DDE (Durban Designer Emporium). In 2000, I got involved in The Space concept and we opened our own stores, we now have 10 stores and an online site. Plus we sell through 15 other independent stores.
