My Style returns this week to the BN style page! If you are interested in appearing on this page, simply send two pictures of yourself or that of a friend depicting a typical Day and Night Look with a short summary of your style to my mail box: ijeoma.ndekwu@bellanaija.com
When your entry is approved, you will be required to send in more pictures and personal commentaries on your style or that of your friend as the case may be! Thanks to those who have participated so far, keep the mails coming. Let’s remember that this feature is about appreciating an individual’s expression through clothing!
BN reader and fashion designer Isoken Ogiemwonyi showcases the ‘style’ relationship which exists between designers and their labels. She reveals her avant-garde personal style, and reflects on how it translates to her fashion label, Obsidian.
ISOKEN’S STYLE:
I’d like to think my style is largely a reflection of who I am, and that person changes almost every day. I don’t claim to be ‘different’ or take myself too seriously- I wear what I feel good in – I think that’s what every woman should aim for (even if we can’t help but worry a bit. Lol). My major influences include certain eras, music and books. They not only affect my personal style but are a key part of my design aesthetic and they often shape how I want a collection to look or feel. I’ll try to explain how my personal style complements/ differs from what I design. Enjoy!
HAIR:
Well, I have undoubtedly done everything I can possibly do to my hair. I’ve been blonde, brown, auburn, SHOCKING RED (that was a bad idea), curls, straight, cut my hair, dyed my hair. Despite all these, I’m essentially low-maintenance on the hair front, I hate fussing with it for ages. I cut my hair pretty often but it inevitably goes back in a weave because they are much easier to deal with. I’m on a curly, dark hair jag at the moment though.

MAKEUP:
I rarely wear makeup in the daytime, maybe gloss for my lips and if I’m in the mood, a little smoulder smudges around my eyes.

Events etc are obviously an exception – so for those I tend to go for a ‘glowing’ golden-y type look. My nightime makeup varies according to what I wear really, so I don’t have a standard look. These are probably the best examples:
Bright pink lip, 50’S style swoop, red lips.

Black eyeliner.

Glow.

Haha. Inspired by who else? Bey in Kitty Kat

DAY LOOK:
I hate jeans. I wear them only if I absolutely must. This is probably the focal point of my day look: jeans avoidance. I tend to wear dresses – I go through phases. I had a whole 50’s moment and a bit of a TopShop Mod Squad look. I LOVE leggings, so lots of those with teeshirts and dresses as well. Depending on my mood it can be ‘rock- chick’ or very ‘ladies who lunch/Stepford Wife’. Did I mention I have a thing for hoodies as well?

I don't usually wear white, but I LOVE the back detail!
Top: Camden Market
Shirt: TopShop
Bikini : Michael Kors
Jumpsuit: TopShop

Teehee. 'Ladies who Lunch'
Floral dress: ClotheshowLive, Birmingham (random stall)

Dress: Primark
Belt: Dorothy Perkins
Tights: TopShop

Blue + red maxi dress: O by Obsidian

That DRESS. *sigh* It makes me happy just looking at it. This was my burlesque/Dita Von Teese phase (hence the mini top hat)
Dress: The Lagos Look (Lagos vintage retailer available at Le Petit Marche)
Hat: Chapeau Claudette? (Can’t remember)

Yellow dress: H&M
Leopard Print scarf: H&M

Tee: H &M
Waistcoat: Bershka

Top: Obsidian
Blazer: Dorothy Perkins
Skinny Trousers: Zara
Shoes: Office
O by Obsidian is my diffusion line (read: more affordable) and also leans largely towards daywear. I do lots of dresses and separates in Ankara, cotton and the odd damask or lace. I’ve been doing a lot of experimentation with mixing fabrics and textures; it has gone well so far. It is different from my day look, in that I generally go for comfort. O by Obsidian has the comfort factor but it’s skewed to a stereotypically ‘ladylike’ look.

JEWELRY:
I have lots but I never seem to wear a lot of it. I have been getting a lot of my stuff from this blog since I moved back to Lagos. She delivers!

NIGHT LOOK:
I generally wear what I feel like most, sometimes it’s a spur of the moment decision, oftentimes an updated ‘rerock’, sometimes it’s a whole ‘look’ I planned from top to bottom. I am obsessed with the 1920’s and the 1950’s. So fringing and anything burlesque-y works great for me at night. My biggest style staple for a night out is undoubtedly anything metallic. I must have been a magpie in another life. I adore anything that shines, lame, sequins, chains, beading, even the lustrous sheen of damask is irresistible!
This translates literally to Obsidian as its mostly red carpet / event RTW I design. So, lots of textures and lustre, metallics, embellishments. I’m also wearing Obsidian 98% of the times I’m out. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I’m fairly certain no one else will be wearing exactly the same dress.

Gold Lace Hoodie minidress: Obsidian

Silver Mini with bow: Obsidian

Red Sequinned Playsuit: Obsidian

High- waisted skirt with collar suspenders: H&M

Leopard Skin Dress: Unique Vintage

Gray and white dress: Love UK
Obsidian is mostly stuff you would wear at night, it’s dressier. There isn’t that much of a difference between the design aesthetic of what I make for myself as a Night look and for the Obsidian label. The only exception being when I’m making made to measure stuff. If a client is into more muted, less dramatic stuff – I can’t force my preferences down their throats! So I work around that, but that’s it essentially.

* Obsidian is available at Le Petit Marche in Lagos every last Sunday of the month @ La Saison, 42 Raymond Njoku, off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. The next one comes up on the 31st of May.

sorry to say but, by far the worse i;ve seen!
YOU GO GIRL!!!!! Vewy vewy nice.
Chinese people must love us, look at all that hair!
Nice stuff… and i congratulate you for putting up your style up here… most i would not wear though, because in my opinion I dont see much class in some of the clothes, i think you would have done better with the fabrics you used… however i would have thought that since its “your style” we should see how what you wear sits on you rather than on models. I love the red bag and i see you do too…lol. bon courage though.
Nice Cuz!!Like the outfits
nice dresses!
I’m actually first……………….all the styles are devine!!!!!!!!
Very nice……
I like the Obsidian look…pretty edgy
I think the style shown was fantastic. I love how she is so daring with her style…I think i’m too scared to take such risks and I just prefer being comfortable and going with the flow. Isoken’s style is just fabulous and shows that the status quo might not always be the best way to go. Kudos and looking forward to seeing other ‘personal style’ pages
I love the line!
this is more like a post on her clothing line!nice collection sa

Obidisan dresses are cool. Look like dresses Paris Hilton would wear. the play of diff fabrics defn adds to the appeal, nice.
awwwwww our zeeeeee baby yes knew she wasnt messing about 4rm when she used to design all those crazy secondary school checks lol, very daring i must say, fantastic pieces, mwaaaah
this is a very lovely article (i saw an above comment looking for how to get in touch with her, perhaps the writer should include her web page or obsidian’s facebook page).
Isoken’s style is very daring, and constantly creative, i look forward to seeing more of her stuff & how her line matures in the future.
This is totally creative and bold; with absolutely no barriers
Absolutely FAB!!…i think its more important to have your own style than to be ” Fashionable”…Obsidian is definately stylish!! it is consistant ( When you see a stella…you know its a stella) yet BOLD….IMAGINATEVE…and UNIQUE!!…I totally dig it!!
And by consistant…i mean consistent!!..oopsss
Fashion PORN!!!!!!! Fashion should be a FUN, no holds bar spectacle, and you are defintly BRINGIN it!! Fabtacular!!!
all i want to know is: what kind of parties does this chica attend?
Beautiful..
Like someone already mentioned, this is more of a blog about her design line not her personal style. Nonetheless, I love her creation, very elegant and fabulous but we need to see more of her personal style b/c I almost gave up looking at her photos from the beginning until I started seeing her Obsidian dresses.
I like that the designs are out there. Its most certainly for someone who is daring and comforable with their body and the attention such statement pieces make. I agree with someone elese who made the stament about the quality of the fabric choices. i also think i would like to see some improvement in finishing. I’m not sure if the intent was to leave raw and industrial in some cases. Overall i do still like. Its definately not meant for the everyday woman.
I think quite a few of the girls who have been posted in this section have their blogs and websites it would be great to have the info posted along with the column if they choose to do so.
“Obidisan dresses are cool. Look like dresses Paris Hilton would wear.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
What a diss!
This is the razzest selection of pictures I have ever seen in my life. Don’t even know where to start.
FABULOUS!….u rocked every single outfit…am lovin all of dem…work it gal!
cool dresses
Homegirl’s designs are unique! I love the tan lace pants with the bow. How different. She’s has talent and the more she works on her designs, the better she’ll become.
Love the designs, some of the fabrics…a lil too much pancake for my taste but you are definitely edgy.
LOL!! I am sure the person meant it in the nicest possible way??
The styles she picks out are very flattering for her body. I like her hair best when it’s black…that seems to suit her the best. The golden look is a little too “a la glamour girls – old school eucharia anunobi”.
But the Obsidian dresses are quite beautiful. The creativity must not stop!
Wow…as in wow bad!
nice clothes by Obsidian
WHY???!! wanna go???
Thanks so much. Taken quite a few of the comments on board – constructive criticism
To order you can email me: isoken@ogiemwonyi.com. Or alternatively just pop by Le Petit Marche in Lagos every last Sunday of the month @ La Saison, 42 Raymond Njoku, off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. The next one is this Sunday!! (obviously if you are in Lagos)
Working on a website so watch out for that as well!

gosh.. the clothes are beautiful… esp the night dresses.. culd definately see myself rocking one…*winks*
Hi Luella,
I actually meant the Paris Hilton comment as a compliment. She (PH) actually has a lovely sense of style, and I picture some of Obidisan’s creations on her.
Lol at ur follow-up. Im not sure if ure actually dissing the clothes or ure jkn
her style is the best so far, now i’m gonna go get me at least one obsidian outfit-wow
i love this style , its great and wonderful .. i hope to see better stuff……………
I heart the Obsidian line esp. the beaded fringe dress and the red playsuit…Really Unique… Flirty, fun, feminine and quirky all in one….:) How do we buy the clothes??
Might not always agree with her choices, but I do think Isoken is a stylish girl….her boldness is something I admire.
I think these outfits are really interesting and I could see celebrities with big personalities rocking these on stage e.g. Estelle, Beyonce…have you tried sending them samples?
I personally like the blue and yellow day dress (beautiful and clean contrast) and the skinny pants with the bow back. I wish you much success Isoken.
The outfits are quite frankly ‘garish’
hey the best way to get exposure esp for those outside Nig is to have a website.
very god job, can be bettered. but definately good job. would love to see these next time something comes up.
Oh my GOSH!! These clothes are fantastic, they’re all fantastic. I’ve already saved your email, they’re really amazing, and if you sew them yourself that’s 10X as amazing!!
cool, cool. do what u do.
on another note, does anybody here think they can dress? all the young ppl r getting on this new blog. if u think u r doper than the “dope kids” on http://atsworld.wordpress.com/ then leave a comment on related posts with ur info & atsworld will check u out. everybody is getting on it so leave a comment & u might just b picked. tell your friends. b a “dope kid” today! i’m out.
I liked the first set of pictures from the Obsidian line, they look more comfortable and have a more natural feel. Kudos on your line, you definitely need to get a website going, people will be clamoring for it. Your personal style is definitely bold, I don’t think it’s trashy, but I think it would look much better without the contact lenses…and without the weaves. Sorry, I’m partial to natural hair (not permed ‘natural’ hair, but actual natural hair), and weaves just distract from your God-given beauty. But keep it up with the clothes, and we’ll be waiting on the site, you hear? Peace
Z
