After four days of outstanding fashion on the ramps at Africa Fashion Week, last night at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, the best of African Fashion was celebrated at the 2010 Africa Fashion Awards.
The event which is in its second year of existence was organized by Africa Fashion International which is headed by Dr. Precious Moloi Motsepe. Designers from all over the continent gathered with bated breath to find out who would win the prestigious awards while artists such as Naeto C and Sasha performed for the crowd. With many of the categories split to accommodate African designers based on the continent and those based all around the globe, there was a wide variety of winners.
South Africa’s Black Coffee won the 2010 Designer of Year (Africa) award while Nigerian/British Duro Olowu won in the corresponding international category. South African fashion design pioneer, Marianne Fassler won the Most Outstanding Fashion Contribution award. Nigerian designer Ituen Basi becomes the first ever winner of multiple Africa Fashion Awards, she won the Emerging Designer of the Year award, she adds that to the Most Innovative Designer (2009) award which she won last year. Other winners included Ghanaian/British designer, Ozwald Boateng, American model – Sessilee Lopez and fashion legends – Yves Saint Laurant, Azzedine Alaïa and Joseph Joseph Ettedgui.
BellaNaija.com was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Fashion Communication Award. We are truly honoured! Our Style/Fashion team headed by Ijeoma Ndekwu has worked tirelessly over the last year and a half. We are grateful to AFI for recognizing the team!

Hi all, its great to see Nigerians doing well and representing a good cause globally. I just thought I’d let some very ignorant people know that Francis Udom is actually the Great Great Grandson of Scottish Missionary Mary Slessor who stopped the killing of twins in Calabar, Nigeria. She is on the Scottish Clydesdale ten pounds note with her kids and the village map in Calabr is there. There you go, guys! Google is very informative. He actually dedicated this collection to Mary Slessor and a charity cause to empower women (which is why the collection is called Matriarchy). Actually we also heard that he and partner were invited by The Great Leader and Legend, Nelson Mandela to give his blessings. Well done Bunmi Koko and we are soo proud of you guys. Long live BK xxxx
Duro Olowu is so deserving of the Best International Designer Award……he totally rocks!
Congrats to all the winners! especially to Bunmi and Francis Udom. (Francis is of Nigerian/Scottish heritage….and he wears his Kilt well!!!)
I went straight to the pics and didnt see that Bella scooped up outstanding contribution to fashion…..big ups Ijeoma Ndekwu and the Bella crew!!
.

Big ups to Ijeoma Ndekwu and the BN team great work!
loooooovvvveeeee it!!
So because Sasha re-rocked a dress she’s a loser? Dang! Yeah, I know you are not supposed to re-rock too close together but doing that don’t make anyone a loser!
arieta has come a long way, good to see that dues people put in are paying off.
it’s also good to put a face to the names behind some of these clothing lines.
Congrats Bella Naija! Ah! What’s up with the red trench coat?..Just wrong. lol
lmao @ d pple crucifyin sasha for re-rocking.. lmao.. deg guys CHILLLLLL!!! and wow, thanks 4 d info on Francis Udom… love that he’s keepin d history alive!
