Autopsy Report reveals Nigerian Music Star Goldie died as a result of an “Intracerebral Hemorrhage” caused by “Hypertensive Heart Disease”

The autopsy report for Nigerian music star Susan Oluwabimpe “Goldie” Harvey has revealed that she died as a result of an “Intracerebral Hemorrhage” caused by “Hypertensive Heart Disease”.

Goldie’s autposy was carried out at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja and the report was signed by Dr. O.O Oyewole.

Creative and boundary-pushing artiste Goldie died on the 14th of February 2013, just hours after she arrived from Los Angeles where she had gone to experience the Grammy Awards.

According to the New York Times health section, when an intracerebral hemorrhage occurs, “Death is possible and may occur quickly despite prompt medical treatment.”

RIP Goldie. Funeral arrangements are currently being finalized.

About Intracerebral Hemorrhage from From Stroke Centre.org

What is Intracerebral Hemorrhage?
Intracerebral hemorrhage occurs when a diseased blood vessel within the brain bursts, allowing blood to leak inside the brain. (The name means within the cerebrum or brain). The sudden increase in pressure within the brain can cause damage to the brain cells surrounding the blood. If the amount of blood increases rapidly, the sudden buildup in pressure can lead to unconsciousness or death. Intracerebral hemorrhage usually occurs in selected parts of the brain, including the basal ganglia, cerebellum, brain stem, or cortex.

What causes it?
The most common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage is high blood pressure (hypertension). Since high blood pressure by itself often causes no symptoms, many people with intracranial hemorrhage are not aware that they have high blood pressure, or that it needs to be treated. Less common causes of intracerebral hemorrhage include trauma, infections, tumors, blood clotting deficiencies, and abnormalities in blood vessels (such as arteriovenous malformations).

Who gets it?
Intracerebral hemorrhage occurs at all ages.

RIP Goldie…Probably an embolism. It is well.

    • Let’s read February 20, 2013 at 11:26 am

But they just said she died from Intracerebral Hemorrhage…

      • OlaOluwayimikaaaa February 20, 2013 at 12:34 pm

“Hypertensive heart disease includes a number of complications of systemic arterial hypertension or high blood pressure that affect the heart… since high blood pressure is a risk factor for atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease… ”
        Credits: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertensive_heart_disease

Atherosclerosis can lead to thrombi(blood clot) formation. The process whereby a blood clot dislodges (from an artery-blood carrying vessel that takes blood away from the heart) is called Embolism.

HHD is a “broad medical terminology” with the primary central cause called High blood pressure (hypertension).
This is explained in the ICD-10 [10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases].

You can have HHD with Heart failure Or HHD without Heart failure.
That is why the former is Symptomless while compared with the latter which has symtoms.

The symptomless “cases” usually develop sudden symptoms from “Acute Heart Failure”; which could lead to Death with mins.

The Main “Goal of treatment” is to Treat the Hypertension AND For the “symptomless group of patients”, Prevention is Key – Good Diet, Promote Weight Loss, Regular AEROBIC Exercise, Stop Smoking, Take alcohol in MODERATION.

I believe the Forensic Pathologist made the diagnosis based on the findings from cut section of her brain tissue coupled with her “medical history”.

Intracerebral hemorrhage falls under a category of bleeding WITH the brain tissue itself…. “a serious medical emergency because they can increase intracranial pressure, which if left untreated can lead to coma and death. The mortality rate for intraparenchymal bleeds is over 40%” [Credits : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebral_hemorrhage

P.S: I NEEDED TO SHARE THIS because I am learning and unlearning some use/misuse of medical termiologies .

        Thank you

        Correction:
        **… death within minutes….[paragraph 5]
        **… bleeding WITHIN the brain tissue….[paragraph 8]

May hear soul rest in peace

    • babaay February 25, 2013 at 6:43 pm

I personally think her Hypertension was caused by trauma, she lost her mum at a young age and she said her mum was the only friend she had as she was from a strict christian home and wasn’t allowed to mingle with other kids for fear she may go astray. May we never go through trauma because if any one has been through such or have people who have been traumatized then you will have a better understanding of it…

  • Tsarah! February 20, 2013 at 11:04 am

This is scary! We lack the “medical check-up” culture in Nigeria! We really need to start doing that regularly especially since there are no age restrictions (or sometimes symptoms) for these silent killers! Lets all try and see our doctors every six months at least! God rest Goldie’s soul!

    • been there February 20, 2013 at 12:56 pm

its not so muc about lacking the medical culture, a good number of doctors here take your complaints lightly except you mount pressure. I have numerous stories of where doctors in Nigerian hospitals would not examine you instead, every little symptom has to be malaria. That is why one needs to work hard and pray for God’s grace, if you can afford it go for check ups abroad or your Reddington….But dont take anything lightly, even a tummy ache.

  • Zayt February 20, 2013 at 11:33 am

what happened to doctor patient confidentiality. It is one thing to announce the cause of her death, put to release the actual document? HABA

    • Kapelo February 20, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Confidentiality?? When everyone’s been saying her death was drug related. I’m sure it was her close friends or family members that released this document to prove otherwise

    • johnson February 21, 2013 at 12:38 pm

if they didnt publish aw will u learn what happened to take caution……pls lets be guided no knowledge is lost !

  • sedkt February 20, 2013 at 1:12 pm

Waking up with a sudden blood shot in the eye, is one of the symptoms of HBP. Check your BP even your local dependable “chemist” has a machine, check their and at least every 6 months at a proper clinic.

    It s a pity ! RIP , Goldie

  • justkeeping February 20, 2013 at 4:25 pm

I’m not suggesting she was on drugs but honestly one of the risk factors for IH (ie her cause of death) is in fact drug use…cocaine especially. If u need proof, just google cocaine and IH. Or visit webmd.com. again, I’m not saying she was on drugs but the idea that the autopsy result prooves she wasn’t on drugs is simply not true.god rest her soul

    • Knut February 21, 2013 at 12:30 am

Drop this drug thing naaaa. If it was coke, the autopsy would also have picked cocaine in her blood. There are a couple of things they would have noticed before concluding that it was a result of hypertensive heart disease – it’s a multi-organ affecting illness. Get educated i beg you

      • juskkeeping February 21, 2013 at 2:31 am

hi Knut, I didn’t say that’s what killed her. we are all educating one another here. To be clear, i’m saying drug use is one of the underlying causes of IH as drug uses increases your blood pressure and overtime causes High blood pressure /hypertension. now that doesn’t mean if IH kills you, cocaine will be found in your system. It does mean, though, that continuous use of cocaine etc, could have increased your blood pressure and led to IH.

    • Anon February 21, 2013 at 2:57 am

You are right. They need a separate test to determine if it was drug related. Many things can cause hypertension.

  • juskkeeping February 20, 2013 at 4:36 pm

ok ***prove*** and here is a link to that article….webmd.com/brain/brain-hemorrhage-bleeding-causes-symptoms-treatments?page=2

  • Joyce February 20, 2013 at 4:49 pm

This same problem killed my colleagues brother. He complained of headache and went to the hospital. He was there for some hours and the doctors could not figure out what was the problem, only gave him IV to hydrate him. He later went into comma, came out of comma and was even talking, requesting to go home. In all he spent about 15 hours at the hospital before he died, no treatment except IVs. My colleague consulted a doctor here in US to find out what could have happened. Here is the summary of what the doctor said based on the explanation of what happened:
    1. Your brother died of Intracerebral Hemorrhage.
    2. This is a deadly problem that can kill if not caught on time once it happened. Chances of death is high in the first 15 mins. If the patient survives the first 15 mins, chances of not dying from it is over 90%.
    3. Solution is a procedure that releases the blood from the brain, relieving the brain of the pressure. The procedure lasts few mins and is not complicated.
    4. Since your brother got to the hospital and lasted up to 1 hour (not to talk of 15 hours), his death could have been prevented.
    5. Your brother’s death is as a result of the doctor’s ignorance or negligence.

There is need to create awareness about it. Nigerian doctors should try and learn how to handle this problem.

  • boo February 20, 2013 at 5:13 pm

yes regular checkups are good but that cannot conclusively help detect illnesses like this.

In yankee, you have to do a lot to convince your Dr and Insurance that an MRI(which can detect these illnesses) is needed.

Remember the obvious symptoms are headache and high blood pressure which are very common in most pple. Imagine if they did MRI for everyone that complained of Headache and HBP.

Sigh. Na God sha. Live right, stay healthy anf hope for the best

    • Knut February 21, 2013 at 12:34 am

This is simply not true. If your dr feels you need an MRI or CT, they will get one done. They do not need you the patient to ‘convince’ them. Nobody does MRIs routinely for every headache complaint but if your headache type warrants imaging, no physician or emergency department can or will refuse to do whatever is necessary to save a life.

    • Lisa S. February 21, 2013 at 1:05 am

Get your facts straight, if you get headaches a lot, the doctor will order MRI and if insurance does not want to pay, the doctor can get a prior authorization from the insurance company. This is to rule out aneurysym. Thank you.

    • Babe February 21, 2013 at 4:39 am

Don’t wallow in ignorance Abeg u……if a patient comes to the hospital with a headache, then goes into a coma and come out is that not enforce to suspect something big? Our doctors here just don’t get it, but at the same time can’t blame them cos of lack of facilities…..u don’t do MRI for every headache but u can ask questions and from symptoms know that it’s beyond malaria….

  • B February 20, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Bella Naija you’ve just shown why you are the nations leading information (not just entertainment) website.

Not only did you mention the result but you took your time to explain it! Kudos much!

  • Bukky February 20, 2013 at 7:57 pm

For the most part death certificates are public records.Autopsy reports however, are usually sealed. I don’t know what the specifics are in Nigeria, but you’d expect a site like this to practice responsible and ethical journalism. .Except Goldie’s family wished to release it, making public an autopsy report is just unnecessary!

    • BellaNaija.com
      BellaNaija.com February 20, 2013 at 11:42 pm

The report was released to the public. Other than her cause of death, it did not reveal any information that was not already public – her name, age, address, time of death etc…
      BN takes privacy extremely seriously.
In light of the rumours that had been published by various media sources about the cause of Goldie’s death, we felt it was right to publish this document to clear any doubt about the cause of her death.

Goldie was such a wonderful person, she loved her craft and was devoted to it despite criticism. May she Rest in Perfect Peace.

  • @ajiriavae February 20, 2013 at 8:39 pm

The last time I saw her video (a few days before she died) I remember thinking “at least she is doing something with her life”. Let this be a reminder that all we have is now. RIP Goldie.

  • Winny February 20, 2013 at 9:48 pm

    Most people are advocating medical checkup, with whom exactly. We don’t have medical doctors in Nigeria, what we have however,are in these 3 categories;
1;GP = Malaria and Typhoid Doctors
2; Obstetricians =Jaundice and Injection Doctors
    3; Surgeons = Butchers
All other symptoms you are referred to your Pastor for spiritual healing.

    • Mujer Casada February 21, 2013 at 12:32 am

Ameeeeeen to that! Indeed. I have heard doctors with med certs working at a southern teaching hospital advice a patient to go and seek spiritual help. You are correct.

  • Lol February 20, 2013 at 10:28 pm

O yeah…that too could be a cause of sudden and rapid death.Must have been accelerated by the height plus pressure.people…itz not Hypertension that kills, itz the complications….Watch your health o,nobody is too small to have it o

  • Conny February 20, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Why did Ifeoma Harvey have wait till after the death of Goldie before coming up with all the fabricated stories about how Goldie snatched her husband? It is not good to speak evil of the dead and since Goldie is no more alive to defend herself, Ifeoma should do herself good by keeping quiet. I felt a sense of personal loss on the death of Goldie and I pray that God should forgive her shortcomings and grant her mercy.

  • mofeattah February 20, 2013 at 11:02 pm

  • PJ February 20, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Thank you BN for taking time to explain this, I’m surprised to hear there were rumors surrounding her death. The moment I heard she complained of headache I thought she must have had brain hemorrhage or something similar. This thing is taking the lives of young Nigerians a lot. It shows people are under too much stress to make it and survive. I pray the Lord grant us good government that would create opportunities for people, good health care system etc. And Also may God grant us grace to serve Him truly because the Spirit of the Lord is able to warn us of impending danger. May we not sorrow over any of our young loved ones this year or the next. May we all grow old if the Lord tarries and be in health and wealth

Hypertension popularly known as BP is not referred to a silent killer in medical terms for no reason. A simple check regularly and medication can control BP. Goldies’ death is a result of uncontrolled, unmanaged BP. I should know, I was diagnosed last year.. with daily lifetime medication, all my markers (indicators Dr’s check) are now akin to that of someone without BP..

  • Obialunanma February 21, 2013 at 1:31 pm

Such a pity that Goldie has to have her privacy torn to shreds in public like this sequel to what must have been a very painful death. Classically described as ‘the worst headache of one’s life’
However, it is pertinent to point out that her ‘intra cerebellar haemorrhage’ was not described as a sequel to her existing ‘hypertensive heart disease’. They could have stemmed from the same source, they might not have also. I’ve seen some allusions to taking IV drugs, well that could lead to hypertension over a period of time and whilst a sudden increase in blood pressure from IV drugs can lead to a bleed in the brain, it can not cause changes in the heart instantaneously.
However she, in death, has alerted the socially savvy clique of Nigerians to the scourge of Hypertension in our parts. That one is young, nubile and fit says zero about one’s Blood pressure.
Please go and get your Blood pressure checked today if you haven’t previously. It is not enough to say ‘I feel well in myself’. ascertain that you are well, for real. Usually, our health seeking behaviour is really poor in Nigeria and this is usually alluded to the non-existent, Unaffordable, unreliable health systems in Nigeria. But then, this probably doesn’t apply to Bella Naijarians as a great chunk of us are well-read, and can afford decent healthcare, and lo! we travel in and out at will. So please, shrug off the culture of denial and get yourself checked.
Time is brain… and brain is life.

The NIGERIAN medical system is rubbish….i could remember few years back when a friend was very ill ,she was in her early twenties then and the nurses at the ikeja genera hospital wouldn’t take a BP cos they said she was too young, though the nurses thought they were educated but in real fact they are ignorant and have got mentalities because i don’t see how age has got to do with that.
