This is one African whose story is VERY inspiring. Malawian writer, speaker and social activist, Shadreck Chikoti is a grounded African who strives to break the mould of ‘African’ literature. In his feature on CNN‘s African Voices, he shared that he had his first published poem when he was 9 years old and he is diversifying into the other ‘unAfrican’ genres such as fantasy & sci-fi.

He mentioned that people usually describe African authors as authors who write about Africa. While American authors are simply authors who COME from Africa. African authors often get told that their stories are not authentic African and this isn’t right. African writers should be able to write whatever they want to write, because writing is liberating.
