‘The Labour of Love’- Funlayo Deri releases A/W 2011 Collection

Published

 on

Funmilayo Csilla Deri is a Nigerian born, London/Budapest based fashion designer who launched her eponymous label in March 2011. The brand- Funlayo Deri is out with their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection of luxury ready-to-wear women’s fashion.

The collection features bold yet softly stylish pieces was inspired by the designer’s desire to pay homage to women who work hard. With each one unique, the pieces celebrate individuality, but all have in common a fine cut, luxurious fabrics and painstaking workmanship.

The designer seeks to make clothes for women that they can love and love themselves in, clothes which exude elegance and imbue confidence. The Labour of Love collection features intricately draped, structured, asymmetric and fitted dresses and separates in exquisite silks, lace and leather that look divine and feel amazing on the body.

The Labour of Love collection features pieces in rich colours, textures and details like lace inserts. We get to see cocktail dresses, flow length dresses, a selection of jumpsuits and coats in widely varied styles. Although, I find a few pieces in this collection a little over done and would have preferred if  the styles were simplified, the majority of the pieces in this collection are very strong, the cut-out pieces are my absolute favourite and I admire the craftsmanship that went into making the coats and cape.

Ijeoma’s review was spot on (surprise surprise an actual review and not a descriptive essay! Bella Naija Fashion is growing!) Some pieces were overworked, and the simplest pieces were the strongest. That black jacket! BEAUTIFUL!

Yup…the black jacket, and maybe the blue jumpsuit. Most of her pieces look stiff to me…like she was forcing the fabric to do what it wasn’t meant to do. That last dress? No. The third to the last dress? No…so forced.

And what exactly is wrong about identifying as a nigerian designer, its not as if she came out with another ankara print collection, no offense but please criticize constructively.

I find the clothes and the modeling to be a bit catalogue-y; lacking a bit of polish IMO.

You’re spot on. And so is the styling. Poor. The clothes are too beautiful for mediocre presentation.

Some of the stuff on there is stunning. Love!

Is it just me, or is there some evidence of really bad sewing here? as in, the purple satin panels on the last dress look like the seams aren’t straight, just ironed to death.
That said, love the leather jacket, and the red dress.

Ok. Not every stylist will do the high fashion, out of this world thing we see (which quite frankly is beautiful in its own right). But these look simple and easy to wear. I like them.
