Understanding Acne…Revealing Beautiful Skin (Part I)

I was recently going through some of my old pictures when I realized that throughout the years, the one thing that remained the same in all my pictures were my acne. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always suffered from acne, ranging from cute rash-like pimples in areas like my forehead or chin to biblical sized boils in unflattering places like my cheeks, and once the inner corner of my eye.

When it comes to my battle with acne, I’ve done everything humanly possible to fight it with the exception of laser treatment. From 3 to 5step systems, washing my face 3 times a day, changing my diet, visiting all the dermatologists my insurance could cover, trying every product possible, steaming the life out of my face, brushing with all kinds of high tech equipment to even chanting some “I’m happy my face is clear affirmations” (yes it was that serious). I even went the natural route, first mixing the ingredients in my fridge to visiting a herbalist who gave me some shady concoction to apply on my face after first cleansing with my urine. Needless to say I didn’t do that or see the lady again, but I just decided to stop fighting the breakouts and understand why this was happening. After months of researching I finally came upon some basic facts about acne. If you’ve never taken time to understand why you breakout, below are basic facts that will help you understand acne, to best effectively fight them.

1. There are 5 main known causes of acne:
a. Excessive production of oil by the sebaceous gland (or oil producing gland) of the skin
b. Hormonal imbalance
c. Pore buildup based on excessive shedding of dead skin cells
d. Irritations or reactions from makeup, food allergies and medication
e. Bacteria buildup in the pore

2. Not all “acnes” are the same
There are different categories of acne based on their severity, location, and size, and they should be treated accordingly. If you are suffering from the mild forms of acne such as blackheads and whiteheads, topical treatments are you best bet for treating them. But in the case of severe acne characterized by large painful nodules, cysts, pustules, and sores, a dermatologist visit is required to make sure that the problem is not exacerbated by harsh cleansers. Often times an antibiotic may be described to fight the P.acnes bacteria that causes such severe forms of acne. The worst thing you can do is to pop a zit that’s actually a cyst or nodule.

3. Pay attention to the location of your acne
Where you frequently breakout tends to say a lot about the type of pimple you’re having, and how it should be treated. If you breakout on your forehead it is often a sign of stress, using comedogenic makeup, or even your hair style! Acne that occurs around the cheeks and jaw-line is often a result of a hormonal imbalance, (for some women it can be a result of their period). Pimples caused by a hormonal imbalance, needs a combination of topical and systemic treatment.

4. Acne is not always a direct result of dirty skin
So STOP excessively washing, scrubbing and toning you face with skin irritants like alcohol, menthol, lemon and eucalyptus; this aggressive form of cleaning only increases irritation. When I finally learned how to gently wash my face, I noticed that my acne greatly subsided, as opposed to the times when I vigorously scrubbed my face with a wash cloth.

5. There are two course of actions for fighting acne

  • Topical treatment &
  • Systemic (internal) treatment

a. For Topical treatments you have 4 active ingredients to pay attention to when choosing the right product for yourself.
i. Salicylic Acid or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA): Salicylic Acid fights pimples by sloughing off excess skin cells, it acts as a gentle exfoliate that preps the skin for any treatment to be effectively penetrated. Because of its exfoliating power, Salicylic acid makes for a great face wash.
ii. Benzoyl Peroxide helps fight the P. acnes bacteria that causes acne by oxygenating the pores, this kills the bacteria that cannot live in an environment that is oxygen rich. BP is also great from reducing the formation of new bacteria because it helps rid the skin of excess dead skin cells, eliminating the chances of having clogged pores.
iii. Sulfur is an ingredient frequently found in acne medications. It has been used for years to treat skin ailments, in the case of acne, sulfur works as a disinfectant. It unclogs pores, kills bacteria on the skin and minimize oiliness.
iv. Retinoids (retinol, retin-A) found in prescription acne medication works by speeding up cell growth. Retinoids are not exfoliates that affect the top layer of your skin, but affect the lower layer of the skin (dermis) that forms new skin cells.

b. When dealing with a systemic way of fighting acne the key is to control hormonal imbalance that increases the oil produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands.
i. One way of doing this is to increase you intake of oil supplements: Vitamin E, Fish Oil, and Evening Primrose Oil

6. When fighting acne, the math is as follows:
i. Reduce the oil production (control hormones)- through proper dieting, intake of fish oil supplements and exercise
ii. Improve skin’s exfoliation- by using Salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide face wash
iii. Disinfect the skin to kill P.acnes Bacteria- by using ingredients with sulfur and Benzoyl Peroxide

7. With that said, below is a regimen that has helped me in fighting acne and keeping it off my face
i. Cleansing: The first step in treating acne is to GENTLY cleanse the face with a water-soluble cleanser. This means mild cleansers with no fragrance or harsh ingredients, if you’re not sure look at the ingredients list and make sure water is the first listed. Some great examples of water-soluble cleansers include Olay forming face wash and Cetaphil’s face wash. If your skin is not sensitive, you can use a face wash with 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide.
ii. Exfoliating: After first cleansing, the next best step is to exfoliate. The best means of cleaning inside the pores where pimples occur is to use a 1% or 2% Salicylic acid.
iii. Toning: Once you’ve exfoliated use a gentle toner to get rid of excess oil. An excellent option is Tea Tree oil which is a great natural disinfectant, but I find tea tree a bit strong so I don’t use it every day and I switch it up with Proactiv’s aloe vera toner.
iv. Treatment: After cleansing, your next step is to kill the bacteria with a treatment. 2.5% Benzoyl peroxide is still the best over the counter option. I personally find the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide cream a perfect fit for my sensitive skin. I once used a 10% all over my face and the next morning my face was swollen. However, for a great 3 day spot treatment I gently dab the 10% Benzoyl Peroxide on my pimple with a cotton bud.
Every once in a while I like to deeply cleanse by adding a Retinoid treatment and clay mask, but for the sake of this article I’ll focus on the first steps of fighting acne.

What about you? How do you fight your stubborn acne?

The next phase of this article is a product review, be sure to let us know what products work and others that don’t.

For me the clinique three step treatment works for me. I have a combination oily skin very prone to acne break outs, siince a cousin introduced me to this over 6 months ago, I have no regrets.what I do is wash with the acne soapn cleanse with the clarifying lotion and moisturise with the dramatically different gel. For clinique these are the basic steps, depending on your problem area- acne, dullness, uneven skin tone, blemishes etc other skin treatment would follow. Be sure to speak with ur dermatologist though or visit them at where you can actually do a self help by typing your skin condition and your required treatment and regime is given to you.. Go ladies! Get every one dazzled with ur lit up face…a natural spark!

this is untrue, if u want ur acne to disappear use clarins products. they are expensive but worth it> the face treatment oil dries acne/pimples like magic and the toner and body viel is the best> will recommend the bright plus skin care line also. Goodluck

Ladies I think the one thing we should all remember is that different skin types require different skin products. There are a klot of them sold in the shoips and sure not to use anything harmful though that could make ur skin susceptible to damage and further breakouts or even skin discoloration!

Now this is what I’ve been talking about bella naija! A BB/ mobile friendly site. Now I don’t have to keep scrolling sideways to read posts on the site, just up and down like I do on other sites. Great information! My only suggestion is to be careful with the use of benzoyl peroxide. This can be incredibly damaging to the skin as current research shows it to be as damaging as long sun exposure and can lead to premature aging as well as skin cancer. Finding products that do not contain benzoyl peroxide can actually be better for your skin and provide some protection against these dangerous effects!

Very clever article, sometimes people can never understand the trauma acne puts you through and in some cases its a life long battle which am winning at the moment lol, the only thing i’ll add that works for me is that you also have to MOISTURIZE your face to keep a good balance because some people tend to think stripping off the oil will solve the problem but it only makes your face produce even more oil and more breakouts so don’t over exfoliate or wash too often, using an oil free moisturizer and shine control products help.

I use St. Ives Apricot scrub (in the morning only) and follow up with good ol’ African Black Soap (in the morning and the evening), then I moisturize with Mary Kay’s TimeWise Moisturizer… I hear that Aloe Vera and Lemon juice is good, I haven’t tried Aloe Vera, but Lemon juice is very very irritating when you first apply it. So I’m going to get Aloe Vera juice and mix it with the lemon juice to pacify the sting that comes with Lemon juice.

My skin is oily, oily and oily some more. I have adult onset acne, i’ve used accutane, birth control, differin, spironolactone, tazorac ect. They all work and then when I stop, it comes back again. Now I use Biore oil free gel cleanser to wash AM & PM. I used a clinidamycin 0.1% toner and then an oil free moisturizer. At night i repeat the same steps, but instead of a moisturizer, I use Retin-A micro (tiny amount). It works but it take about 4 weeks and it’s expensive.

It depends on your skin, I have combination skin; my T-zone is oily & acne-prone & recently I’d get pimples on my forehead, cheeks & chin but everytime I used commercial/store-bought stuff, my skin would get really dry.
So I decided to go the natural route. I included more vitamin E in my meals, wheat germ, flax seed, and nuts like almonds. I also stepped up my proteins ’cause they’re essential for great skin, hair, & nails–fish like salmon & tuna.
For skincare, I turned to grapeseed oil, it’s really great for oily skin as a moisturizer & astringent instead of using chemicals. It’s also got some SPF & it fades blemishes. I also use castor oil as a cleanser…it might seem crazy to put oil on oily skin but when it’s the right oils, it just works.

I used to use proactiv but it did not work for me,until i started using Clinique three step acne system it worked for me but its expensive so i swiched to using Biore triple action astringent which is cheaper and i use clean and clear morning burst and clean and clear soap, and i also use Ambi products it actually works for me it helps to clear up my acne scars, i have been using it for about a month now and my skin has never looked better.

    • asanwam

      April 26, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I thought am the only one PROACTIV didn’t work for, with all the celeb endorsements, I spent a small fortune 4 years ago importing proactiv from USA and used it for about a year, it was like i joint a money cult lol(if that makes any sense) there was little improvement but it didn’t really work just goes to show that price doesn’t determine the effect of a product, you can still find something locally that will work and won’t cost a fortune and never under estimate the effect of good diet, rest and sleep.

    • posh-eva

      April 27, 2011 at 8:46 pm

proactiv was or is still a total scam! i am just disappointed on the huge celebs bribed to do be endorsed. not only was it expensive, all 3 products except the mask contained the same ingredient: BENZOYL PEROXIDE. So imagin using 30% of BP 2x daily=60% which is so not right for the skin. smh

my advice on a cheap and effective way to prevent acne is to address the cause, first impove your circulatory system by doing at least 15mins of aerobic exercise, it helps in hormonal balance, and also opens up the pores, , then a gently facial wash with clean and clear facial wash, and a steam with hot water and trea tea oil, or citric juice, next, exfoliate with a tea spoon of lime juice and sugar, and rinse with cold water, follow with a mask of honey and milk and leave to set for 15 mins, rinse with water and u wld have a perfect smooth, acne free skin. repeat twice a week .and reinforce your face with a light based moisturizing lotion with spf.

to add to what you have already said: please read ingredients on the back of products before you buy. if it worked for your twin sister doest mean it would work for you. find what causes your breakouts, and please avoid touching your face with your hands except when your doing your routine. go for a facial every 2/3 weeks. the steamer helps open your pores and the extractor is great too. stay off caffeine, simple sugars and most of all, drink plenty H2O. lets chant together: we are happy our faces are cleared! we are happy our faces are cleared!!

I have the occasional black and white heads as well. I notice that when I use certain facewash, it makes my pores bigger. I am currently trying what a friend told me + my own thing. I mix fresh lemons, brown sugar and honey; I leave it on for about 5mins and then steam my face. Steaming my face without honey also makes my pores bigger, so I put honey on. After steaming for about 5mins, I wash it off while I gently scrub my face (with the sugar on it). I take green tea three times a day, squeezing fresh lemons and orange into it or orange juice. I am also taking supplements for the skin and I have decided to eat healthy (with the occassional binge on unhealthy foods #slaps back of wrist, bad me!). I dont only do this for my skin but also for my digestive system. Drinking green tea after a meal helps reduce your craving for seconds. I try use the Japanese or is Chinese rule of ‘remember to stop when you are 80% full.

I have done this for aout a week and my skin looks healthy and moist. I try to steam my face every second day and use the lemons every second day as well.

Have mad acne, went to a dermatologist and he prescribed a regime of cleansing with sebamed soap and 10% benzoyl peroxide in the morning and cleansing with sebamed and applying retin-A at night together with a daily intake of vitamin E (1000iu) and vitamin C (1000mg) supplements. I’ve already noticed dramatic improvement although it’d take 3 months to get my face back to normal lol. Basically, just go to a certified dermatologist and stick to whatever routine your given till you get those results!! The reason why it never gets better’s because most ladies are impatient and would switch treatments as soon as they hear it’s working for Mrs. A. There is no quick-fix treatment to acne – simple 😀

My experience with acne was a terrible one. I started with smooth, clean and clear skin during my teenage yrs until later on. I tried Marykay, Neutrogena, Cetaphil, etc. I even took some antibiotics i got from the doctor that i had to stop cos of the irritating smell in my breath and urine. Now I’m with Proactive and it’s working well; also use Mint Julep Masque every other day to exfoliate.

i’m actually getting fed up. my spots are probably related to hormone imbalance issues, but they drive me crazy. after having to stay in a place where starch and sugar was the most predominant food for almost three months, i returned only to face this onslaught of acne, from jawline to chin…to almost everywhere. it’s really driving me crazy, cos my skin is uber-sensitive and they just keep coming. i’ve had a facial, but it seems worse. the most annoying part is, this seemed like a part of history that i thought would never repeat itself again. and i really hate changing products because of acne! now, i’m resigned to my olays exfoliator wash and the mudd mask. i’m working on the diet thing, plus the green tea. i hope it works out soon.

I wash my face regularly, but to clear up the dark spots I use lemon juice and apply this to my face with cotton wool after I have washed my face and exfoliated my face. Then twice a week I use an egg white face mask.As you can see all of these techniques are cheap and easy. The egg white mask is simple just whisking egg white into a bowl and applying it to your face then pasting tissue ontop which after 10-15mins sets onto your face, and you are left with a mask. I found that this gave me basically 48 hour differences and people were ALREADY commenting I was surprised. It is great!WATER DOES NOT WORK,IT IS A MYTH! Now my face is great I only have to wash my face twice with an exfoliating sponge, and I do not use the lemon and egg white trick a lot unless if i have a party the day after. Baking soda powder is good too. CONS: DO NOT DO IT EVERYDAY OFYOU *WILL* DAMAGE YOUR SKIN AND WILL FIND YOUR SKIN TO BE IRRITANT,AND MAYBE RED.

I have had hideous breakouts in my life and acne ruled my life for years. I am pleased to say that my skin is not perfect yet, but I have it under control more than I ever have in my life. I am also no longer a slave to morning rituals like before. I am still a tad obssessed with face washing because I wear makeup everyday, but I have even toned down my make up and I no longer have to check the mirror a million times a day to make sure my face is not greasy or my make up isn’t revelaing my secrets. I am happy to say I am free and I will try a laser in the future to correct past damage. I am learning it’s not worth it to poke and prod the ones that come once in a while, especially during my period.

First thing I did was give up toners, when I discovered through research and experience that they actually aggravate the skin and rub it of important oils. All that dirt you see on you cotton pads are just for the psychological benefits for the most part. I will not completely condemn toners as every skin has different needs, but they were not for my acne tortured skin.

What do I use morning and night? I wash off my face with a fair and white bar of soap that is hydroquinine free and doesn’t whiten my face (I know we acne suffers have tried all kind of crazy stuff to take off the scars, but this soap does not change my complexion, it just brightens it) It’s called the Fair and White exfoliating soap Savon AHA2 Exfoliant with no hydroquinine. I use it directly on my face twice to cleanse and exfoliate, more than twice when removing makeup. After that I dry my face with a disposable cloth and then apply “neomedrol” by pfizer all over my face. Summary: wash with exfoliating soap, dry with disposable cloth and apply neomedrol. It does not get any more simple than that for acne sufferers or any woman maintaining her skin.
One of my mother’s friends once told me that my skin will never be clear, I did not believe her and I knew she was a liar. That was 2008, May, 2011 she saw me and said, “wow! Your skin is clear, keep up whatever it is you are doing. I never imagined it could be this clear”. I said “thank you” and followed under my breath with a “take that b*tch!” She also said I wouldn’t get the man I love and should be satisfied with whatever he gives me, he’s still in my life 3years later not sure if he’s the one or not, but I certainly don’t believe her, I believe I can get what I want when I decide I want it. So ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you “you can’t…”

Just for a brief profile; I am light skinned and I even tried getting darker when I was younger to hide my dark skars which stood out from a mile away, only to find that they got darker too and spending time in the sun only made me look more “suffer headish”. My friend that was darker skin had more scars but looked better than I did, because are complexion concealed them a bit.
With my new found regimen I am proud of and happy with my light complexion even though I still think ebony girls are luckier and need less maintenance. 🙂

I would recommend fresh and light skincare.A new brand based in Nigeria. They are exclusive and use fresh ingredients that dont smell like most afro products do. They also lighten skin very effectively in just weeks I went from dark brown to white and it looked so natural.

It’s good what you guys are doing, trying to help people suffering with acne. But unlike everyone, am tired of trying. Before acne, I had a life, so much confidence cos every girl wanted to be like me and every guy wanted to date me. I have spent a lot trying to get rid of acne and unfortunately, I’ve come to the conclusion that if you have acne You just have to learn to live with it cos nothing actually works

Well, you got me when you said lemons are not so good for skin. I’d like to differ 🙂 It’s good for my skin. I faded away dark spots on my cheeks in a weak of rubbing it and leaving it on and then washing it and moisturizing. I dont use no lightening creams or all those thing you mentioned above. But I love your article. I’d love to read many more.

    *lets stay natural*

I have a combination skin and I use Brenese face cream. It helps balance the oils on my face. And in my mid 40s I do not need or wear makeup.

I think it does; I had to stop using it when it seemed like it made my acne worse. It CERTAINLY made my face very oily though.

I’ve ALWAYS had some acne but I would get one or two really bad pimples that would last forever and scar. I tried every product from neutrogena to Clinique and after those failed attempts I gave Citrus Clear’s products a try – first only the cleanser. Skin does better without too many steps! I’ve used it for 3 yrs and only got maybe 5 pimples total (not kidding). I will never change! Their moisturizer is good too, but the Tangerine Tingle was too strong for my skin. . .

I’ve been using Cetaphil’s cleanser and moisturizing cream and always felt itchy and redness on my face even those are made for sensitive skin. BUT I just got the Made from Earth Green tea Cleanser and pH Equilibrium Moisturizer last night and I’m very satisfied with it. Granted I have super sensitive skin(and also oily), never felt any uncomfortable since last night.
