Consumer Protection Council raises concern over MTN’s “Recharge And Win Aircraft” Promo

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has expressed its concern over telecoms service provider, MTN‘s ‘Recharge and Win Promo’ where the winner is promised a brand new aeroplane or the cash equivalent.

To this effect, the CPC has planned to meet with MTN to discuss consumer’s concerns over the promo.

Mr Abiodun Obimuyiwa, the Deputy Director, Public Relations, CPC, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday about the meeting but did not disclose the date of the proposed meeting.

MTN had on August 17, in Lagos, launched the Ultimate Wonder, a new customer-based ‘recharge and win’ promo.

Customers are expected to win weekly cash prizes while the ultimate winner would go home with a Cessna 182TAeroplane in a grand prize presentation in October.

Obimuyiwa said the issue had agitated a lot of minds, adding that the council was concerned about it.  He disclosed that the CPC had sent a letter to MTN “and they have agreed to come for a meeting.”

According to him, reports from the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) showed that there was a 400,000 dollars invoice from MTN meant for the winner of the aircraft.

The deputy director however, said that “there is a pending court case on sales promotion between MTN and CPC as a result of which MTN did subject its promotions to CPC.”

Thank God oh, CpC spoke out. When I first heard it, I thought this must be ridiculous. In a country ridden with so much poverty, MtN will be doing something like this. It doesn’t even make sense. It only goes to show the value we place on material things.

Been waiting for CPC to speak up.
    Thank goodness they did.
It’s only in Nigeria that these companies can do unreasonable promos. They can’t try it in their home country.

I’m waiting patiently for the person to win the aeroplane or it’s cash equivalent or whatever. It’s unfortunate that nigerian network providers are all rip-offs. CPC also needs to do something about how they illegally deduct the airtime of unsuspecting subscribers. Right now airtel just deducted over #600 from me ‘cos that’s my alternative line which I guess they noticed I don’t use much. I just wish I had the wherewithal to sue their thieving ass

This is a mockery of the situation of things in Nigeria. Highly insensitive! They need the services of experts that can advise them on where and how to channel their money.

with so many contract staff in MTNN? why cant they make calls to be cheaper? make life better for thier subscribers, reward heavy airtime users, how do they expect pple to spend the little they have on call with the hope of winning aeroplane, this is madness.

A promo is a promo. You don’t like it, you don’t participate. Nobody force you! But if you want to criticize, please get accurate information. MTN has given free calls before, also free airtime, also rewards to customers who spend a lot of money with the network. And also they have a foundation that invests in social issues. It is not MTN’s job to fix all Nigeria’s problems. It’s only a promo. If you don’t like it, don’t participate!

Ehya, how much were you paid tot ape that. Mschew. If you can’t see that win a plane is ridiculous, your sense of loyalty to MTN has re wired your brain. Win a plane, to park it where na, to fly it where, to sell it to who. All the promo’s MTN and co roll out every year, I can’t remember ever seeing one actual winner. if truly they purchased a plane to dash out, which i highly doubt, why didn’t they spend that money upgrading their crappy services.

I think its totally retarded for MTN to make such promo. We all know they will not give the plane, what they will give to the winner will be money and the balance in shares. We should not be fooled with their kind gesture. Its a publicity stunt….They have wack service and they cannot improve it with the money meant for the plane….May go save Nigerians…SMh****
